Emergency services on high alert as thunderstorm warning issued in three provinces
The weather service said the conditions could cause travelling disruptions, flooding, large amounts of small hail and wind damage.
'Maximum temperatures are also expected to be low due to the cut-off low-pressure system's core moving over Gauteng. The severe thunderstorms are expected to persist … until about 21:59 on Thursday, with a 60% chance of rain occurring in Tshwane,' City of Tshwane emergency services department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said.
Residents have been advised to be alert and take precautions.
'The City of Tshwane emergency services department will continue to monitor the weather reports and remain on high alert throughout the city for any related emergencies to protect life and property,' Mnguni added.
City of Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said it was extremely cold in most parts of the city on Wednesday night.
He said the department would remain alert to deal with any incidents.
'Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices, paraffin stoves and candles, and not to leave them unattended while in use,' he added.

Temperatures to climb above 30C by Monday amid yellow heat health alert
Temperatures will soar above 30C in parts of the UK by Monday with another exceptionally hot spell bringing a yellow health alert. A fine day on Sunday will be followed by 'strong August sunshine' for England and Wales in the new week, with even the chance of isolated thunderstorms developing, the Met Office said. The forecaster previously said temperatures could reach the mid-30s across central, southern and eastern areas of the country in the coming days, and another heatwave was possible in some areas. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat health alert from 12pm on Monday until 6pm on Wednesday, covering London, Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands, east of England, the South East and South West. There could be a significant impact across health and social care services, including the potential for a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. Tom Morgan, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: '[There is] definitely a north-south split in the weather [on Monday]. 'Quite cloudy across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, the rain tending to come and go, but most persistent in western Scotland. 'Otherwise, England and Wales seeing mostly sunny skies, although there will be more in the way of high level cloud out there compared to on Sunday, so the sunshine [will be] hazy at times.' Most areas of the country will have temperatures in the mid to high-20s on Monday, while some spots around London and the South East could have highs of 31C. There will be lots of blue sky and sunshine for 'the vast majority' of the UK on Sunday, with temperatures feeling noticeably warmer nationwide but particularly across northern areas thanks to a lighter breeze, Mr Morgan said. Highs of 28C are possible in London while temperatures will be comfortably into the mid-20s elsewhere. The heatwave threshold is met when a location records at least three consecutive days with maximum temperatures exceeding a designated value, according to the Met Office. This is 25C for most of the UK, but rises to 28C in London and its surrounding area, where temperatures are typically higher. Emergency services are already having to respond to the rising heat and ongoing dry conditions. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had declared a major incident on Saturday as about 100 firefighters battled a fire in Holt Heath, near Wimborne, while crews have continued tackling a large blaze at Newton Heath, near Swanage, which has been burning since last Sunday.

Severe storms, large hail and isolated tornadoes possible in eastern Colorado Saturday
Strong to severe storms are expected across much of the Interstate 25 corridor and eastern Colorado on Saturday. A cold front moved through overnight, bringing cooler temperatures, higher moisture, and an upslope easterly flow. These ingredients will work together to help trigger storms between noon and 3 p.m., with the main severe threat from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Storms will be scattered, meaning not everyone will see one. However, any storm that does develop could be intense. Large hail up to 2 inches in diameter is possible, especially from Castle Rock south and east toward Springfield. An isolated tornado or two will be possible, mainly on the eastern plains. Right now, the greatest severe potential remains east of Denver, but it's a close call and will be monitored closely. Many visitors are in town for the Savannah Bananas game Saturday evening. Those attending should keep rain gear handy, but the severe threat in downtown Denver should end well before first pitch at 7 p.m.

Local volunteers to feed flood survivors in Texas
Aug. 9—A Priceville-based volunteer organization, North Alabama Boys, will travel to Texas on Sept. 7 to feed flooding victims and volunteers. Rand Hutchison, North Alabama Boys' leader, said the group wants to provide three meals a day through Sept. 14 while there. "Our first thought has always been the food, to cook for people and cook for them well," Hutchison said. "We've found it's our little niche to show up a little later than everybody else. There's obviously a big need when a disaster first happens. There are other groups that go in and they meet that need, which is fantastic, but as always, the support starts to kind of dwindle a bit as time goes on." The group will travel to central Texas, where catastrophic flooding killed at least 130 people and damaged the houses and property of countless others over the Fourth of July weekend. Although the volunteers have contacts in Kerr County, where some of the most severe flooding occurred, they're open to traveling elsewhere as they're needed. Similar to its efforts in North Carolina last year, the organization wants to provide "good Alabama barbecue and good Alabama cooking" to the people in need, Hutchison said. Meals will include breakfast burritos and ribeye sandwiches or hamburgers. A mix of old and new faces totaling 12 volunteers will travel to Texas. At this time, contacts in Texas tell the group they'll know other specific needs closer to September. "We're going to go with a goal of being very adaptable," Hutchison said. "If we get there and we see a need, we're going to meet the need." The nonprofit is still reaching out to local organizations and businesses to gather supplies. Burningtree Country Club will provide some of the food items, according to Hutchison. North Alabama Boys has a fundraising goal of $15,000 to cover the cost of the relief effort. Hutchison said the group has raised around $10,000 so far. With these funds, volunteers should be able to feed between 300 and 400 people each day. Anybody wanting to get involved or make a donation can either visit the organization's Facebook page, NA Boys, or its website, Another local volunteer group, Project Unify, has also helped in Texas since the flooding. "We are currently still in and out of the work in Texas," its website reads. "The flooding that devastated communities has left behind lots of work. It is our goal to represent the body of Christ in service, as well as in teaching. ... We request your prayers, involvement, and if possible your support as we continue forward with these efforts.
