'Hero' LAPD sergeant fatally struck by vehicle while responding to crash
Sgt. Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was fatally struck by a vehicle early Monday while responding to a crash on the 405 Freeway in Brentwood, authorities confirmed.
Around 1:58 a.m. on June 23, Sgt. Deng stopped on the southbound side of the 405 near Getty Center Drive after witnessing a two-vehicle collision involving a Toyota Tacoma and a sedan.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said Deng activated his patrol SUV's rear amber lights 'in an effort to be able to slow traffic behind him and provide some level of safety for the people who were involved in that collision.'
As Deng approached the scene on foot, a third vehicle traveling southbound struck him. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Tacoma involved in the original crash also died and a passenger in that vehicle was critically injured. The driver who hit Deng remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

No charges have been announced, as the California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
Deng had served 17 years in LAPD's mental evaluation unit before transferring to patrol in West Los Angeles, where he was promoted to sergeant. Colleagues described him as sharp, compassionate, and deeply committed to public service. 'He died a hero,' said McDonnell at a press conference. 'He was out there caring for others, putting their safety before his own. And he is somebody that we will all look to as an inspiration as we carry on the mission."
Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags flown at half-staff across city and state buildings in his memory. At a press conference, Bass said, 'This is a sad day for our city,' and lauded Deng's selflessness. Deng's body was escorted from UCLA by a marching procession of officers and memorials have been set up outside the West LA division where he served.

Soulja Boy Arrested in L.A. on Suspected Weapons Charge After Traffic Stop
Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday morning (Aug. 3) in Los Angeles after police say they discovered a firearm during a traffic stop. The rapper had been active on social media over the weekend, sharing multiple videos on his Instagram Story, including clips outside his SODMG store in L.A., inside a recording studio, and from his birthday celebration at Poppy nightclub. This incident marks the latest in a series of legal troubles for Soulja Boy. Earlier this year, a Los Angeles court held him liable in a civil lawsuit brought by a former personal assistant who accused him of rape, awarding the woman $4 million in damages. In 2023, he was also ordered to pay ex-girlfriend Kayla Myers $471,900 in connection with an assault and kidnapping lawsuit filed in 2020. In March 2019, Soulja Boy was arrested for violating probation related to a 2014 weapons conviction. The following month, he was sentenced to 240 days in jail and 265 hours of community service. Police searching for three hit-and-run drivers that killed pedestrian in Baldwin Hills
Police are searching for at least three hit-and-run drivers who struck and killed a 61-year-old pedestrian in Baldwin Hills on Sunday night. It happened at around 9 p.m. near the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Roseland Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators say that the victim, who hasn't yet been publicly identified, was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a car traveling northbound. He was then subsequently hit by two other cars, also heading north, police said. None of the three drivers stopped to help the man, who was pronounced dead after he was rushed to a nearby hospital. A standing reward of up to $50,000 has been offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the alleged hit-and-run drivers. Investigators did not provide details on any of the suspects or vehicles involved. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact LAPD at (323) 421-2500.

Police arrest suspected gunman who shot at driver in Los Angeles nightclub crash
Police have arrested a man suspected of opening fire at the driver accused of plowing his vehicle into a crowd and injuring dozens of people outside a popular Los Angeles nightclub in July. Efrain Villalobos, 28, was arrested on Aug. 3 in Redondo Beach, a coastal city about 21 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His arrest comes just days after police had identified Villalobos as the suspected gunman in the July 19 shooting. In the early hours of July 19, a vehicle crashed into a packed crowd, leaving the Vermont Hollywood nightclub in the busy neighborhood of East Hollywood. After the crash, police said bystanders pulled the driver out of the vehicle and attacked him. During the altercation, police said a man — later identified as Villalobos — approached the scene from across the street and shot the driver once in the lower back. The suspect then fled from the scene on foot and remained at large for about two weeks. Villalobos was booked on suspicion of attempted murder without bail, police said in an updated statement on Aug. 4. They did not provide additional details on his arrest but said the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration. The chaotic scene unfolded at about 2 a.m. local time on July 19 as a crowd of patrons left the Vermont Hollywood, according to police. The driver, who was identified as Fernando Ramirez, 29, had been kicked out of the nightclub before returning minutes later and ramming his vehicle into the crowd, police and prosecutors said. The car came to a stop after colliding with several food carts, which became lodged underneath the vehicle, according to police. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said 37 people were injured in the crash. Injuries ranged from "minor abrasions to serious fractures and lacerations to broken bones," and several victims were briefly trapped beneath the car, according to authorities. Ramirez was charged with 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, Hochman said. He faces multiple sentences of life in state prison if convicted on all counts. On July 21, investigators asked for the public's help, releasing surveillance photos from cameras near the venue that showed the suspect wearing a blue Dodgers jacket, a light blue jersey with the number "5," and blue jeans. Authorities had warned the public that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous, and urged the public to contact police with any information that could lead to his arrest. "We understand the emotions involved, but when the threat had ended and the suspect was no longer actively harming others, the use of deadly force was both unlawful and dangerous to everybody present," Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said at a July 22 news conference. On Aug. 1, police said the suspected gunman was identified as Villalobos, who was believed to be in the Redondo Beach area. He was described as a Hispanic man with a shaved head, brown eyes, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing about 160 pounds. Police noted that Villalobos has "distinctive features," such as gauged piercings in both ears and multiple tattoos, including his last name on his right forearm, the phrase "respect is earned not given" on his inner right arm, and the name "Miabella" on his left inner arm. Los Angeles police said investigators were working with the Redondo Beach Police Department to locate Villalobos. Redondo Beach police arrested him at around 1:15 p.m. local time on Aug. 3, and Los Angeles investigators took the suspect into custody.
