Evans put name back out there as Eastbourne run ends

London, June 27 (UNI) British number five Dan Evans believes he has "put his name back out
there" after his run at Eastbourne ended with defeat in the quarter-finals.
Evans upset world number 13 Tommy Paul on Wednesday but fell 6-2 6-3 to American Jenson Brooksby a day later.
The 35-year-old has claimed two top-20 wins in as many weeks, beating world number 14 Tiafoe at Queen's at the start of the grass-court season before seeing off Paul in Eastbourne.
He also beat world number 49 Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the first round at Eastbourne.
"In an hour or so I'll reflect on this week, it's been great," Evans, who was ranked inside the top 30 two years ago, told BBC Sport.
"I've put my name back out there a bit. I've got a great event coming up.
"It is just positives leaving Eastbourne."
Evans is now back in the top 200 and has been given a main-draw wildcard for Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
Evans was convincingly beaten by Brooksby in windy conditions, losing serve four times and failing to set up a break point of his own.
"It was really difficult conditions," said Evans.
"It's not easy but that's tennis, you have to recover and get back out there. It all felt very quick today."
Brooksby will face Ugo Humbert in Friday's semi-final after the Frenchman beat British number four Billy Harris 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 on Thursday.
Harris, who will also be in next week's Wimbledon main draw, was knocked out in the quarter-finals
at Eastbourne for the second successive year.
Like Evans, Harris' match took place on court one and not the tournament's centre court - something Evans described as "disappointing".
"I do have questions as to why no British players were on centre court today," Evans said. "
"The British fans come here to watch British players."

Olympic champion Zheng to face Siniakova first at Wimbledon

London, June 27 (UNI) China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen will start this year's Wimbledon Championships campaign with first-round opponent Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic as the main draw was revealed here on Friday. Zheng, 22, reached the third round in her first appearance at Wimbledon, but failed to pass the opening round in the last two years. As the fifth seed in the women's singles main draw, Zheng will meet Siniakova on Monday. Siniakova, with 10 women's doubles Grand Slam titles in her pocket, reached the third round in the women's singles event at Wimbledon three times. She entered the Berlin Open through qualifiers last week, but lost to former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the round of last 16. Zheng reached her first career grass-court semifinal at the Queen's Club Championships earlier this month, but withdrew from the Berlin Open due to a neck injury. Zheng's compatriot Wang Xinyu, who reached the Berlin Open final by beating newly-crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff, will face 15th seeded Czech Karolina Muchova in the first round. The 23-year-old Wang stunned American ace Jessica Pegula in the second round at last year's Wimbledon before reaching the fourth round for the first time. Meanwhile, the world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus will play against Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine. Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova will face Filipino rookie Alexandra Eala. In the men's singles main draw, the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is going to lock horns with his Italian compatriot Luca Nardi, while defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will meet Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in the first round. Wimbledon's draw puts Alcaraz against Fognini in the first round. Coco Gauff faces Yastremska

LONDON: Carlos Alcaraz will begin his bid for a third consecutive Wimbledon championship and put his career-best 18-match winning streak on the line by facing the volatile Fabio Fognini in the first round at Centre Court when the tournament begins Monday. The singles brackets for the grass-court Grand Slam tournament were set in Friday's draw, including potential men's quarterfinals of No. 1 Jannik Sinner against No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti, No. 4 Jack Draper against No. 6 Novak Djokovic — who has won seven of his 24 major trophies at the All England Club — No. 2 Alcaraz against No. 8 Holger Rune, and No. 3 Alexander Zverev against No. 5 Taylor Fritz. The possible women's quarterfinals are No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 6 Madison Keys, and No. 4 Jasmine Paolini vs. No. 5 Zheng Qinwen in the top half, and No. 2 Coco Gauff vs. No. 8 Iga Swiatek or 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, and No. 3 Jessica Pegula vs. No. 7 Mirra Andreeva in the bottom half. In addition to Sinner, Djokovic, Draper and 2024 semifinalist Musetti, the top half has No. 10 Ben Shelton and No. 13 Tommy Paul of the United States, along with Alexander Bublik, an unpredictable and underarm-serving player from Kazakhstan. He reached his first major quarterfinal at the French Open by defeating Draper — his potential third-round opponent next week — and then won a grass-court title at Halle, Germany, for the second time, beating Sinner along the way. Alcaraz and Sinner could only meet at Wimbledon in the July 13 final, which would be rematch of their epic showdown for the French Open title won by the 22-year-old Alcaraz for his fifth major trophy. In Fognini, Alcaraz faces a 38-year-old veteran who has been ranked as high as No. 9 and was a French Open quarterfinalist in 2011 but is currently No. 130 and never has been past the third round in 14 previous appearances at Wimbledon.

Eastbourne Open: Eala makes history for Philippines by reaching final

Alexandra Eala became the first player from the Philippines to reach a WTA Tour final as she beat fellow qualifier Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 on the Eastbourne grass on Friday. The 20-year-old left-hander, ranked 74th in the world, edged a tight first set before losing five games in a row in the second as the match appeared to be slipping away. But she regrouped in the decider and survived a tough seventh game before breaking her French opponent's serve to lead 5-3. She then enjoyed a love service game hold to seal victory. In Saturday's final she will face either Australia's Maya Joint or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. 'I'm super happy because that was a tough match and there were some really tough moments,' an emotional Eala, who is based in Mallorca and trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy, said on court. 'It was tough physically and mentally because she is a tough player and also came from qualifying.' Eala's run will not have gone unnoticed by reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, who has been drawn to play her in the first round at the All England Club next week. Krejcikova reached the quarterfinals at Eastbourne but withdrew with a thigh injury on Thursday.
