Exhibition highlights impact of emergency on democracy
Varanasi: An exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of emergency imposed by former Prime Minister late

was organised at Shaheed Udyan by the information department.
A total of 57 image kits were displayed at the exhibition titled "The Dark Chapter of Indian Democracy" and "Attack on the Constitution through Unethical Amendments".
It included several reports of that period.
Union minister of agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the exhibition on Friday. During his visit, upon seeing the image kits on "Action against School Students: 9th-10th Graders in Odisha Imprisoned for Five Months," Chouhan stopped and reminisced, stating that he was also affected during the emergency.
The exhibition illustrated how the "soul of the Constitution was crushed, the voice of Parliament was suppressed, and attempts were made to control the judiciary during the Emergency.
Mayor Ashok Tiwari, MLC Hansraj Vishwakarma, BJP city president Pradeep Agrahari, Prem Prakash Kapoor, and others were present on the occasion.

Efforts underway to form popular government in Manipur: Biren Singh
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday (June 28, 2025) said efforts are underway for setting up of a popular government in the State which is now under President's rule. Speaking at the sidelines of a programme at BJP State headquarters, Mr. Singh expressed hope that a new government will be formed in Manipur soon. "We are working to form a government at the earliest. We are a national party. After looking into the ground situation, I have faith that a government will be formed soon. BJP and its allies want a popular government as well. We are working for restoration of popular government," he said. "We, BJP, haven't criticised anybody. We are concentrating only on the present crisis. We are approaching the Central government and concerned persons to bring an amicable solution and peace in the State. In the meantime, we are also working to restore a popular government with frequent gatherings of MLAs. Everybody wants the restoration of peace. Peace is compulsory. In the last seven or eight months, there have been no reports of fighting between communities," the former CM said. Mr. Singh said the Central government is working day and night to restore peace in the State. To a media query, Mr. Singh said, "I have said earlier that illegal immigrants and drug cartels have affected the entire Northeast as well as the whole nation. Slowly, everyone has come to understand this issue. This change is a positive sign, and together we can fight these elements." The Centre had on February 13 imposed President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The State assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.

Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviews IIVR work in UP's Varanasi, urges better farmer outreach, calls for focus on seed quality & natural farming
VARANASI: Union minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan , held a review meeting with scientists of the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR) at the Circuit House auditorium on Friday. He emphasised the need for agricultural scientists to advance the Developed Agriculture Resolution Campaign and improve communication with farmers. He praised the success of the campaign conducted nationwide and spoke about the continuous rise in food production in the country. He stressed the importance of improving its quality and ensuring the benefits reach farmers. He also highlighted the need to make farmers aware of genome editing, seed treatment, organic farming, and natural farming to boost vegetable production. In addition, he called for a strategy to tackle issues like counterfeit fertilisers, poor-quality seeds, and harmful pesticides affecting farmers. The minister stated that there are 16,000 agricultural scientists in the country working on research and the development of high-quality seeds. He appreciated the Lab to Land programme, saying it enables research to be tailored to farmers' needs. He called for efforts to increase the shelf life of tomatoes, develop crops suitable for dry powder and export, gather scientific data from organic and traditional farming, and accelerate work on gene editing. He also stressed the need for research under the Developed Agriculture Resolution Campaign to be based on farmers' practical requirements. He urged scientists to consider how lessons from the campaign can directly benefit farmers. He also spoke about the importance of increasing production through farmer-led innovations. He said the government is making efforts to increase agricultural output, reduce costs, provide compensation for crop losses, ensure fair prices for produce, and promote natural farming. He stressed the need for better coordination between different departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and the state agriculture department. The minister underlined the importance of preparing a region-specific action plan for the upcoming Rabi season and called for greater resilience in the vegetable production system in light of climate change. He emphasised the need for effective collaboration between agricultural science centres and research institutes to speed up the transfer of technology to farmers. Rajesh Kumar , Director of IIVR, presented a detailed report on the institute's achievements and work with farmers. He shared that under the Developed Agriculture Resolution Campaign, IIVR scientists had engaged with 61,109 farmers across 825 villages in six districts. Sudhakar Pandey, Assistant Director General of ICAR, gave a brief overview of the institute's activities. The meeting was attended by a large number of IIVR scientists and officials, as well as state agriculture department officers and KVK representatives.

ECI ‘shouldn't turn into party office': TMC on Bihar electoral roll revision

TMC MP Derek O'Brien asked as to why this exercise is being suddenly done right now, before Bihar elections. (ANI) "TMC has the highest regard for the Election Commission of India as a constitutional body, but the constitutional body should not turn into the branch office of the BJP. Why is this exercise being suddenly done right now? We have evidence that it is being done now because the latest BJP's internal survey for Bengal shows the BJP will get 46 to 49 seats in Bengal Assembly polls. In desperation to change or attempt to change things, you do these desperate things..." the TMC MP said in a press conference. He further stated that the ECI was conducting an exercise called the special intensive revision of the electoral roll in Bihar, which would also be followed in West Bengal. Under this, new and existing voters have to submit proof of birth & birthplace for those born before July 1987. If these documents are not submitted within a month, your name will be deleted from the voter list," Brien said. In 1935 under the Nazis, you were supposed to be given an ancestor pass. Some proof of paper to show that you are an Indian citizen is this the new version of that Nazi Ancestor Pass?... All the INDIA bloc parties will take this up in and outside Parliament..." he added.
