How To Build A Million-Dollar Business While Solving Global Problems
There was a time when I thought I had to choose between social good and success in business. Then came several natural disasters that led me out of the corporate world and into the global for-profit social enterprise space. As a guy in the shoe business, I made the connection between shoes and the reuse economy. In other words, I figured out how to boost local communities, get used quality shoes into the hands of people in developing nations and support sustainability.
For others, solving global social issues could be different, of course. But here's the thing I've learned in our social enterprises: The bigger the problem, the more profitable the brands have become. There are several reasons for this, of course. It's taken a lot of time and effort, but I'd like to share what has allowed our team to do good and let the brands expand.
The Myth Of Choosing Sides
For generations, there's been a false narrative that people must choose profit or purpose because they're on opposite ends of the spectrum. Not true. In my view, they're complementary forces, and I'm not alone in that mindset. I remember when the idea of corporate social responsibility (CSR) was more in words than action, and now, even local businesses on Main Street take CSR seriously.
The fact of the matter is that leaders who focus on profit and purpose provide immense value. For instance, in our social enterprise brands, we connected local community needs in the United States, reducing waste and supplying small businesses in developing nations with inventory to sell the shoes we procure for them through our partners. The connections we made provided global value, and our brands have profited.
If you're someone who wants to get up in the morning with a purpose and for profit, you can do it. The magic happens when you stop and think. I know we're all rushing around, but the most significant and crucial decisions in life and business don't happen in a rush. They need to marinate in the mind, and the person needs to truly own it. So, ask yourself what problems keep you up at night because they likely keep others up at night, too. Start there.
Scale Through Systems, Not Just Heart
The key to combining profit and purpose is to find the sweet spot where they intersect with market demand. In other words, for our brands, there was a need in the local American markets to get funds into communities. There was also energy around sustainability and the climate crisis, and there was an understanding that sustainable solutions were necessary for people in developing nations. That was the runway where we took off.
It's essential to realize that brands take off when they scale. Early on, I spent hours at the kitchen table where our first social enterprise brand was managed, looking into every aspect of the business with the team. More than a decade later, from our global headquarters, I still spend time almost daily on key areas: sales, marketing and operations. Moreover, thanks to technology, we measure everything from revenue growth to partner satisfaction and the amount of waste we save by redirecting shoes into the reuse economy.
The Partnership Advantage
Aside from the scale of the system within our brands, there's another essential aspect of our social enterprises. We consider our customers, small business partners in developing countries and our logistics team as partners. When you view people and entities as partners, you're working on fulfilling the same purpose together. That motivates people, and people realize that we operate beyond profit for purpose—together.
For instance, we don't just ask for inventory when approaching large retailers and leading marathons for our sneaker reuse brand. We talk about creating a partnership whereby we help them leverage their brands, solve a waste disposal problem, lower the environmental impact of waste on the planet and help people worldwide with a hand-up. The very idea of a partnership makes all of our constituents realize we're looking for mutual win/win action and success.
Your Problem Is Your Opportunity
A positive outlook is another overlooked necessity to build a million-dollar business. Challenges can't be wholly insurmountable. Take environmental sustainability and the climate crisis, for instance. To some, we're past the point of no return. I don't choose to look at it like that, and neither does my team. We continue to find opportunities to do better for the environment and people.
The business leaders who will create the next generation of successful small and medium-sized businesses don't focus on loss. They focus on opportunities, and with the idea of purpose, profit and making a difference, there's plenty of opportunity. Social challenges are simply market inefficiencies waiting to be solved. So, if you want profit and purpose, start where you are, with what you have and look to solve a market inefficiency—with partners.

1 ‘Strong Buy' Dividend Stock to Buy to Protect Your Portfolio
While gold (GCZ25) is usually seen as a defensive asset and investors don't really expect it to keep outperforming risk assets like equities over the long term, things have been different over the last few years. The precious metal is outperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) this year, something it has also done over the last two-year and three-year periods. Gold miners are a leveraged bet on gold as they tend to rise or fall more than the precious metal. We see something similar with other commodity producers, given their earnings sensitivity to the underlying commodity. More News from Barchart Is Ford Stock's Juicy Dividend Still Safe Amid the Global Tariff War? After Hitting 30th 52-Week Low, Is Adobe Too Cheap to Ignore? Markets move fast. Keep up by reading our FREE midday Barchart Brief newsletter for exclusive charts, analysis, and headlines. In the gold mining space, Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) is one name that looks like a good bet. The stock has outperformed the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) this year and looks set to continue its good run, as we'll discuss in this article. But, before that, let's look at gold's outlook. Gold Has Outperformed Stocks in 2025 Gold is a hedge against the volatile equity markets, and often the two assets tend to move in opposite directionntals. While stocks tend to do well in periods of economic boom and macro and geopolitically stability, the yellow metal outperforms when there is economic turmoil or geopolitical tension. Notably, while the S&P 500 Index has hit record highs and put the tariff tantrum behind it, there are several risks that markets are wary of. These include a burgeoning U.S. national debt, geopolitical tensions as China and Russia push for a new world order, and the trade tensions which are testing the current global system. While stock markets have learned to live with these issues, unless they seem to threaten the world economy in a significant way, investors are increasingly pivoting to gold to hedge their bets. Global central banks have also been increasing gold's share in their foreign currency reserves, creating a tailwind for gold demand and, by extension, prices. Why Agnico Eagle Mines Looks Like a Good Buy AEM is one of the largest gold mining companies globally, with mines in 'safe' jurisdictions in Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Finland. Its all-in sustaining costs (AISC) were $1,279 per troy ounce in Q2, and management reaffirmed the 2025 guidance of between $1,250-$1300 per troy ounce. The company is in the second-quartile of the global cost curve, which places it in a sweet spot, as it has good leverage to any upside in gold prices. On the downside, the company's costs are significantly below what gold prices currently trade at, providing it ample cushion to survive any gold price slump. AEM Has Paid Dividends for 42 Consecutive Years While being a 'non-yielding' asset is one of gold's drawbacks, gold mining companies make it up through dividends. AEM has paid dividends for 42 consecutive years, and the bonanza is expected to continue as higher gold prices lead to an increase in earnings. In Q2 2025, Agnico-Eagle Mines generated free cash flows of $1.3 billion, of which it used $200 million for dividends and another $100 million for share repurchases. The company also pared its debt by $550 million in the quarter and now has a net cash position of almost $1 billion. The company aims to return around a third of its free cash flows to shareholders in the form of dividends and share repurchases. It is also investing in organic growth, which bodes well for its production profile in the coming years. While the current dividend yield of 1.2% is a tad below the S&P 500 Index, AEM should increase the dividend either later this year or early next year as higher gold prices lift its cash flows. AEM stock trades at a forward enterprise value-to-earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EV-to-EBITDA) ratio of 9.6x, which, although higher than its historical averages and some of its peers, is not yet frothy, given the structural tailwinds for gold prices. Moreover, Agnico-Eagle has historically commanded a premium over peers given its relatively safe business and strong balance sheet. Overall, with a growing production profile, favorable position on the global cost curve, rock-solid balance sheet with a net cash position, and finally reasonable valuations, I find AEM a good dividend stock to buy. Agnico-Eagle Mines Stock Forecast Brokerages are also quite bullish on AEM, and it has a consensus rating of 'Strong Buy' from the 15 analysts covering the stock. AEM's mean target price of $142.56 is 5.2% higher than the Aug. 11 closing price. The stock has continued to rally since the last time I covered it in June, and I expect it to build on its YTD gains in the coming months, even as there might be some downward pressure in the short term. Olam 1HFY2025 patmi surges 573% to $323.8 mil, declares 2 cents per share dividend
In February, the group committed to 'right-size' by allocating approximately US$2 billion to 'de-lever its balance sheet and make it debt-free and self-sustaining'. Olam Group has reported patmi of $323.8 million for 1HFY2025 ended June 30, more than four times higher y-o-y at a 573.2% surge. Revenue during the period rose 49.9% y-o-y to $15.3 billion, while reported operating profit (or ebit) rose 85.5% y-o-y to $708.7 million. Including Olam Agri, or 'discontinuing operations', ebit was up 35.5% y-o-y to $1.2 billion. The group has declared an interim dividend of 2 cents per share. The group announced on Feb 24 that it has agreed to sell its remaining 64.57% interest in Olam Agri to Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) in two tranches: 44.58% (Tranche 1) and 19.99% (Tranche 2) at the end of three years, post Tranche 1 completion. Given the conditional 100% sale of Olam Agri has been approved by shareholders on July 4, Olam Agri, excluding entities to be retained by Olam Group, is classified as a disposal group with assets and liabilities held for sale and defined as 'Olam Agri (discontinuing operations)' in the 1HFY2025 results. The results of retained entities are included under the remaining Olam Group's continuing businesses within the group's consolidated results. 'We therefore present the full results for ofi and remaining Olam Group as 'continuing operations' and consolidate only the profit or loss of Olam Agri (discontinuing operations) in its aggregate group profit or loss. This approach will be adopted until the sale of the 44.58% stake in Olam Agri is completed,' says Olam in its results release on Aug 14. Excluding one-off items, core patmi (or operational patmi) grew to $327.1 million on improved performance by ofi and the remaining Olam Group. Free cash flow to equity (FCFE) improved to negative $945.3 million from negative $5.4 billion this time last year due to 'substantially lower' working capital deployment, says the group. Net gearing increased slightly to 2.83 times from 2.60 times previously, due to higher working capital, leading to an increase in borrowings. To-date, ofi has secured total loan facilities amounting to US$2.45 billion, while Olam Agri has secured total loan facilities totalling US$3.85 billion for refinancing of their existing loans and for general corporate purposes. Following the announcement of the proposed sale of the remaining 64.57% stake in Olam Agri to SALIC, Olam Group has committed to 'right-size' the remaining Olam Group's capital structure by allocating approximately US$2 billion to 'de-lever its balance sheet and make it debt-free and self-sustaining'. The group had also committed to invest US$500 million of equity into ofi, which was completed before end-June. The group has also committed to 'responsibly divest and monetise' all of the remaining Olam Group's assets and businesses over time and 'progressively distribute' the net proceeds to shareholders via special dividends. Separately, the group announced in April the sale of its remaining 32.4% stake in ARISE P&L for US$175 million and expects this transaction to close in 2025. Olam Group co-founder and CEO Sunny Verghese says: 'We delivered strong patmi growth on the back of operating profit growth in 1HFY2025 despite volatile and adverse macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions. We are encouraged by the steady progress achieved in executing our updated 2025 reorganisation plan to unlock value for our shareholders. Pursuant to the proposed sale of Olam Agri to SALIC and the plan to responsibly divest the assets and businesses of the Remaining Olam Group, our focus is to prioritise ofi and support its efforts in realising its full potential value.' Shares in Olam closed 1 cents higher, or 0.96% up, at $1.05.
