AFL 2025: Carlton star Tom De Koning speaks on contract status

News.com.au07-05-2025
Out-of-contract Carlton star Tom De Koning is in no rush to extend with the Blues, revealing he has 'plenty of things to weigh up'.
De Koning is being targeted heavily by St Kilda with a monster deal in the vicinity of $1.7m a season.
The 25-year-old big man is in career-best form and has parked contract extension talks until later in the season.
'I'm focusing at the moment on just playing my best footy for the team,' De Koning told SEN's Dwayne's World.
'All that other stuff is playing out in the background and I'm just focusing on my football – the other stuff is between the club and my manager.
'I'm not putting a timeline on it, we're comfortable with where everything sits and that will happen when it happens.
'I'm not in a different position to what any of my other teammates have been in.
'You look at 'Crippa' (Patrick Cripps), 'Walshy' (Sam Walsh), Harry (McKay), Charlie (Curnow), they've all been through it, and everyone is different.
'There's plenty of things to weigh up – but if I can play my best footy then I'm putting my best foot forward.'
Carlton could still pitch De Koning a deal worth more than $1m a year but is not likely to be able to match the Saints' 'Godfather' offer.
De Koning says the details of his impending deal at Carlton or St Kilda is not front of mind but admits he has to work out what is best for himself.
'I haven't thought too deeply about that to be honest. I've put myself in this position, so whatever gets offered, gets offered,' he said.
'That negotiation (the length of deal) has been between the club and my manager, (I am) kind of letting that play out.
'I'm very similar to other players. We're all in the same position and we're on a list where players are getting paid different amounts.

Top sports doctor reveals concerning concussion timeline for Aussie codes

One of Australia's leading sports doctors suspects combating the full extent of concussion remains 'years and years' away. Dr Peter Harcourt was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame on Thursday after 40 years of medical service. He oversaw seven Olympic Games and spent time in the AFL and at Basketball Australia tackling the biggest medical hurdles. Harcourt says concussion remains one of the top challenges in world sport and while Australia's football codes have made progress, 'there's still a long way to go'. 'Concussion is the big one at the moment and I think sport is making some pretty big progress,' Harcourt said. 'Certainly, you can see that in the way the game is being played in AFL and in NRL and other competitions like that. 'I think understanding exactly the full depth of it and the mechanisms of it, prevention, the treatment, there's still a long way to go. 'This is going to take years and years to pull it apart and understand what the risks are and how you actually combat that.' Dr Peter Harcourt AM was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame on Thursday at the MCG. Picture: Hamish Blair Several AFL players, including premiership stars Jeremy McGovern and Angus Brayshaw, have been medically retired due to concussion in recent seasons. Cronulla Sharks co-captain Dane Finucane also last year retired following advice from medical professionals. Harcourt said the awareness of long-term damage had prompted players and sporting clubs to change the narrative around head knocks. 'There's no holding back organisations these days in terms of tackling something that is really critical for the welfare of their athletes,' he said. 'The way we managed it 40 years ago was it was a self-limiting condition that would fully resolve – that's the way you thought about it. 'These days obviously you don't because you're worried about the long-term risks associated with that sort of trauma. 'I think the culture in the player groups has changed in that they will come forward and tell you when they're not well. 'There's been a lot of awareness. I'm not saying that it wouldn't happen (hiding concussions), but I think it's much less than what might've happened 10-15 years ago.' Michael Voss to remain Carlton coach after board backs CEO recommendation

Embattled Carlton coach Michael Voss's future is secure after the club's board endorsed a recommendation from new chief executive Graham Wright that he should be retained for 2026. Contracted until the end of next season, Voss's tenure was put on the table at a club board meeting on Wednesday night amid mounting speculation the Blues could follow Melbourne's lead and look for a new coach. Carlton has won just seven of 20 games this season, failing to meet most expectations, after making finals in 2023 and 2024. But on Thursday afternoon a club statement confirmed Voss was safe for next season. 'The Carlton Football Club can today confirm with absolute clarity that its AFL senior coach Michael Voss will remain coach of the Blues into the 2026 AFL season,' the statement said. Michael Voss is safe. Picture:'As communicated by the club in June, incoming CEO Graham Wright has been maximising the final eight weeks of the home and away season to work closely with the football department. 'This has involved clear consultation with players, coaches and staff, producing valuable insights into where the AFL program currently sits, and the necessary steps that need to be taken to take the team forward.' Carlton president Rob Priestley said the club wanted to make 'calm, rational and fully informed decisions' and despite months of poor results backed in Voss. 'The first of these has been in relation to our senior coach, which we are now in a position to provide clarity on following last night's scheduled board meeting,' he said. 'Last night, Graham presented a recommendation to the board of directors that Michael remains as our senior coach into next season. 'This recommendation was unanimously endorsed by the board. Voss leaves Ikon Park during the board meeting. Picture: Glenn McFarlane 'For the last few months Graham and Michael have been meeting regularly, during which time they have been engaged in open and honest dialogue with one another on what is required for us to evolve as a football side. 'Michael's ability to lead our football club this year in the face of incredible pressure has displayed the attributes of a strong and selfless leader. 'Carlton always comes first for our coach, and Graham and Michael share a clear and aligned view on the opportunities to improve football performance. 'We want to make it absolutely clear that Michael Voss is the coach of the Carlton Football Club and he will remain the coach of the Carlton Football Club.' Voss has been in charge of the Blues since 2022, taking them to the preliminary final in 2023 and the finals again in 2024.
