Nearly nine months after the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed at the Rajkot Fort in Maharashtra's coastal Sindhudurg district, a new 91 feet tall statue of the warrior king was unveiled at the same site on Sunday. The previous 35-foot statue had collapsed in August last year, less than eight months after its installation, leading to a widespread outrage against the government. That statue had been unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4 in 2023 during the Navy Day celebrations. The collapse led to the arrest of its sculptor-contractor Jaydeep Apte.Speaking at the unveiling of the new grander statue at the fort in Malvan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said adequate care has been taken so that the new statue lasts at least 100 years in any environment. The maintenance of the statue has been given to those who built it. "The statue is 91 feet tall and has a 10 feet pedestal," he said. The contract to build the statue was given to renowned sculptor Ram Sutar and Anil Sutar's firm Ram Sutar Art Creations Pvt Ltd that built the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat. Fadnavis said it can withstand storms higher in intensity than what was witnessed in the past. This is perhaps the biggest statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the country, he said. "After the unfortunate incident (of the statue collase), we had decided that under any circumstances, we will build another grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," Fadnavis said.He said the land adjoining the fort will be acquired for better amenities. He said the statue has been built by noted sculptor Ram Sutar, who also built the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, along with IIT engineers and the head of the J J School of Arts. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said after the statue collapsed in August 2024, the state government had resolved to build a similar statue and instructions were given accordingly. The new statue depicts Shivaji Maharaj wielding a sword that is 29 feet long. Shinde said it was PM Modi who had unveiled the statue in December 2023. "Today, he (PM) is not here but he is standing firmly behind the soldiers protecting the nation. He is also doing some kind of Shiv karya," Shinde said.

Newly built security wall of Kalyan's Durgadi fort collapses after heavy rain
KALYAN: A large portion of the newly built security wall of Kalyan's historic Durgadi Fort collapsed during a sudden heavy rain on Wednesday morning. This wall was recently constructed by the Archaeology and Museum Department of Maharashtra, with an expenditure of around Rs 3.5 crore. Following its collapse, questions were raised about the construction quality executed by the contractor. The local Shiv Sena MLA, Vishwanath Bhoir, was angry after this accident at the historic fort, sanctified by the feet of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and has demanded action against the contractor. It may be recalled that after the dilapidated protection wall of the fort collapsed several times, the state govt initiated the work of repairing the wall of this fort and some other repairs at a total project cost of Rs 13 crore. The repair work on the wall started a few months ago, and this wall was completed two months ago. Meanwhile, after an hour of sudden heavy rain on Wednesday morning, a large part of this wall collapsed. Upon receiving information about the incident, the local PWD officials, police, and local political representatives reached the spot. During this time, the PWD officials, who were carrying out other parts of the project, distanced themselves from the incident, stating that the portion of the wall work of this fort was done by the Archaeology Department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Viva a melhor experiência de estudo no exterior (Inscreva-se agora) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo However, MLA Vishwanath Bhoir stated that the way the newly built wall fell down has raised questions about the quality of the work, and he demanded that action be taken against the responsible contractor because this fort is a source of inspiration for all of us. Meanwhile, speaking to TOI, Jitesh Patel, the contractor who did the work on this protection wall, told TOI, "Recently, we finished the work on this wall, and the filling work was yet to be done where there is soil on top of the wall. Until this time, the rains started early this time, due to which water accumulated on a large scale in the part of the soil above the wall where the filling work was pending, due to the pressure of which the wall fell down. " Patel said, "We will now rebuild this wall again safely by taking safety measures during the rains."

PMK criticises government over TN's poor JEE results
CHENNAI: Expressing concern over TN's poor JEE (Advanced) pass percentage, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the government to strengthen the state board school curriculum. His statement came following a TNIE report titled 'TN lags behind southern neighbours in JEE advanced pass percentage.' In a release on Wednesday, Anbumani highlighted that Tamil Nadu has slipped to the third-lowest position among states in the IIT-JEE (Advanced) 2025. He said the results have come as a jolt to the state, with only 1,859 of the 7,787 candidates from Tamil Nadu clearing the exam, translating to a pass rate of just 23.9%. Only Kerala and Bihar fared worse than TN. He said in stark contrast, West Bengal topped the list with a pass percentage of 35.3, followed by Punjab (34.7), Rajasthan (34.5), Maharashtra (32.4), and Haryana (32). The PMK blamed the government for failing to strengthen the state board syllabus to align with national standards.
