DRI arrests director of Nashik firm in ₹9-crore nutrition import duty evasion case
MUMBAI: The Mumbai unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Saturday arrested the director of a Nashik-based company for allegedly mis-declaring imported nutrition products worth ₹54 crore to evade customs duty of ₹9 crore. The products were imported from China, sources said.
The accused was intercepted at Mumbai international airport upon arrival from Barcelona, Spain. He was subsequently produced before a city magistrate's court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody till June 6.
The DRI initiated its investigation following specific intelligence that the company was falsely declaring imported nutritional supplements—such as Pea Protein and Collagen Peptides—as Glycine, a relatively low-value amino acid. Glycine attracts lower customs duty due to its classification, which is different from high-value nutrition supplements.
In January this year, based on this tip-off, four containers imported by the firm were detained for detailed examination. The investigation allegedly revealed significant discrepancies between the declared goods and their actual contents, confirming suspicions of misclassification and misuse of duty concessions.
According to officials, the accused had earlier ignored summons issued by the DRI, citing health reasons, but was later found to have travelled to Spain to attend an exhibition. He had also allegedly attempted to mislead investigators and manipulate documentation related to the imports.
Though he had voluntarily deposited ₹2 crore towards the alleged ₹9 crore duty liability on May 16, he did so without admitting guilt.
Sources said the director was fully aware of the firm's import operations and the large-scale mis-declaration. The customs duty evasion amounts to an offence under sections 132 and 135 of the Customs Act, they added.

Gujarat diamond trader donates jewellery worth crores to Ayodhya Ram Temple
A Gujarat diamond merchant has donated a lavish assortment of ornaments, including 11 crowns and a golden bow and arrow, to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya. According to Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) officials, the contribution includes 11 diamond-studded crowns, 30 kilograms of silver, 300 grams of gold, and rubies, along with a host of other ornate items. Dinesh Newadia, national treasurer of the VHP, revealed that the donation also features necklaces, earrings, ornamental forehead tilaks, seven bows (four large, three small) representing the brothers of the Ramayana, four quivers, three maces, and ceremonial fly whisks. "Mukesh Patel has donated 11 crowns made of diamonds, 30 kilograms of silver, 300 grams of gold, and rubies," Newadia claimed. The items were flown to Ayodhya in a special chartered aircraft. Mukesh Patel, who owns the Surat-based jewellery firm Green Lab, is well-known in the diamond trade and has previously supported religious and cultural initiatives. This latest donation, however, is among the most significant individual contributions made toward the ornamentation of the Ram Temple. The announcement comes just a day after a major milestone at the temple - the consecration of 'Raja Ram', or Lord Rama in his royal form. The ceremony included the installation of idols in eight newly constructed temples within the Ram Janmabhoomi complex and was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This was the second major consecration ceremony at the site, following the January 22, 2024 installation of Ram Lalla, which was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The consecration ceremony has drawn large crowds to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Champat Rai, Secretary of the Ram temple trust, said that on Thursday, the temple completed the consecration ceremony of seven idols. He stated that the idols installed on the first floor above the sanctum sanctorum include Ram Darbar in the middle, a Shivalinga in the north eastern corner, a Ganapati idol in the southeastern corner, Hanumana idol in the middle of the southern side, Surya in the south western corner, Bhagwati in the north western corner, and Annapurna Mata in the middle of the northern side.

Tirupati temple management initiates legal action for unauthorised sale of ‘Tirupati laddus'
No travel across the globe, no long queues for darshan and no crowds. All that one had to do to get 'Tirupati Laddu' in the US was log on to the e-commerce website PushMyCart and place an order. The Texas-based Mahita LLC, the owner of PushMyCart, is among those services that have received a legal notice from the management of the Sri Venkateswara temple over the 'Tirupati Laddu' – the first-of-its-kind move by a temple in India to safeguard the sanctity and intellectual property of the 'Tirupati Laddu'. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) which manages the temple, has initiated legal action against multiple unauthorised entities that it claims was found selling or promoting products under the name of 'Tirupati Laddu' in violation of its registered Geographical Indication (GI). The notices were served for unauthorised commercial exploitation of the Tirupati Laddu name and falsely associating their offerings with the temple, the TTD said on Friday. The legal notice to PushMyCart, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, revealed how the platform was unauthorisedly using the GI. One, the platform had linked themselves to TTD by listing the body as a 'vendor'. The legal notice read: 'Unauthorised use of the registered GI, coupled with the false association created through your product description and social media content reflects a calculated and dishonest intent to infringe upon TTD's rights over the Tirupati Laddu'. Then in the Q and A section linked to the laddus, PushMyCart platform had vouched, 'Yes, devotees of Tirupati Balaji want to buy Tirupati Laddus online, which is now available on PushMyCart'. The Q and A also said, 'PushMyCart sends the Tirumala Tirupati Laddu prasad to the USA and other countries'. According to the legal notice, some of the laddus could have been obtained by devotees who had received the laddu prasadam from the temple. The sale of prasadam for commercial purposes by any third party is 'illegal', the notice pointed out. When asked the TTD did not reveal how many laddus were being sold through e-commerce platforms per annum. The legal notices, however, highlighted that the Tirupati Laddu is a protected GI under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. 'The preparation of the laddu is done exclusively within the Tirumala temple under the supervision of TTD, following a time-honoured and sanctified process. Unauthorized use and sale of the name not only infringes legal rights but also undermines the spiritual sanctity of the offering,'' the TTD said. In response, PushMyCart acknowledged receipt of the legal notice and suspended its product listings pending legal review. Several other vendors have also taken down their listings following TTD's proactive outreach. TTD EO J Syamala Rao said that the 'Tirupati Laddu' is not just a product, 'but a sacred prasadam with deep spiritual and cultural value'. 'We are committed to taking all necessary legal steps to prevent its misuse and to protect the trust of crores of devotees worldwide,' he said. The TTD said that this is among the first instances in India where a temple offering protected under GI law has been defended through formal legal channels on international platforms. 'TTD continues to monitor and act against any such violations to preserve the authenticity and sanctity of temple traditions,' it said.

Mithi river desilting: ED raids actor Dino Morea, BMC officials, others
This includes the premises of Dino Morea in the Bandra (West) area of Mumbai, those linked to his brother Santino, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, contractors and some others, the sources said. The raids covered more than 15 premises located in Mumbai in Maharashtra and Kochi in Kerala. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches at the premises of actor Dino Morea, some BMC officials, and contractors among others, as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged Rs 65 crore worth Mithi river desilting 'scam', official sources said. The searches were conducted in Kochi as one of the companies that provided desilting equipment to the BMC — Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd — is based in this city, they said. The investigation is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The ED case stems from a Mumbai Police economic offences wing (EOW) FIR filed in May against 13 people, including contractors and civic officials, for an alleged Rs 65.54 crore scam in the tenders awarded from 2017-2023 for desilting of the Mithi river which flows through Mumbai and acts as a stormwater drainage channel for the metro city. The Uddhav Thackeray-led undivided Shiv Sena controlled the cash-rich BMC from 1997 till the party's split in 2022. After the expiry of the general body in 2022, the civic body was controlled by the state government, which was then headed by Eknath Shinde. It was alleged by the police in its complaint that BMC officials tailored the tender for the desilting contract in such a way that it benefited a particular supplier of machinery, and the contractors reportedly generated fraudulent bills for transporting the sludge out of Mumbai. Morea and his brother were questioned by the Mumbai Police EOW in this case last month. The 49-year-old actor has been questioned twice by police. The Morea brothers, it is understood, were questioned by the police about their alleged links with alleged middleman Ketan Kadam, arrested in the case along with another accused, Jai Joshi, apart from some financial transactions made in a company linked to Santino. Kadam and Joshi, according to police, were involved in the renting out of 'silt pusher' machines and multi-purpose amphibious pontoon machines to contractors who were carrying out Mithi river desilting work. This is the second time that the actor has been in the crosshairs of the ED, as, in 2021, the agency had attached his assets as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged bank fraud case against Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech and its promoters. The plan to desilt the river was planned by the Mumbai civic authorities following the 2005 floods, which brought the city to a grinding halt.
