NEW DELHI: The opposition's INDIA bloc has decided to field a joint candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, with Congress president
Mallikarjun Kharge
reaching out to allies to discuss potential names and forge a consensus.
According to news agency PTI, sources within the bloc say there is a strong view that they should not shy away from a contest, regardless of the outcome, in order to send a firm political message.
Although no structured discussions have yet taken place, backchannel talks are underway among partners. While most members agree on presenting a united front, some in the opposition camp feel it would be wise to announce their pick after the BJP names its nominee.
The move comes amid a renewed show of unity among INDIA bloc parties, who have recently pledged to challenge the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and to resist what they allege is the BJP–Election Commission's 'vote chori model'.
On Thursday, top leaders from 25 opposition parties attended a dinner meeting hosted by Rahul Gandhi, their first in-person gathering since June 2024, when they met soon after the Lok Sabha elections at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's residence.

At the meeting, Gandhi made a presentation outlining his claims of large-scale voter list manipulation.
Those present included Sonia Gandhi, NCP–SP chief Sharad Pawar, NC leader Farooq Abdullah, PDP's Mehbooba Mufti, SP's Akhilesh Yadav, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, DMK's Tiruchi Siva and T R Baalu, CPI(M)'s M A Baby, CPI's D Raja, CPI(ML)'s Dipankar Bhattacharya and MNM chief Kamal Haasan, among others.
Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal described it as one of the bloc's 'most successful' meetings, though he said there was 'not much discussion' on the vice-presidential election itself. Kharge is also set to host another dinner for INDIA bloc MPs on Monday.
The vice-presidential race was triggered after Jagdeep Dhankhar unexpectedly resigned on 4 August, citing medical reasons, though political murmurs suggest other possible factors.
The vice-president is elected by all members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated MPs. The combined strength of both Houses is 781, meaning a candidate will need 391 votes to win if all members vote. With around 422 MPs, the NDA currently has the numbers on its side.
The Election Commission issued its notification for the 9 September poll last Thursday. The last date for filing nominations is 21 August, scrutiny will be held on 22 August, and withdrawals will be allowed until 25 August.
Three nominations have already been filed but were rejected for procedural lapses.
Under constitutional provisions, a vice-president elected mid-term serves a full five-year term.
Candidates must be Indian citizens aged at least 35 and eligible for election to the Rajya Sabha, and cannot hold an office of profit under the central or state governments or any local authority.

'Vote chori' helped Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav win, says BJP's Anurag Thakur

New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday alleged large-scale irregularities in voter registration in Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj - constituencies of Rahul Gandhi , Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Abhishek Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav - and demanded their resignation from the Lok Sabha. The party claimed they won through " vote chori " and accused the Congress and its allies of running a campaign against the Election Commission to undermine the mandate of "honest and genuine Indian citizens" while compromising national security. BJP leader Anurag Thakur, in a slideshow presentation at the party headquarters, flagged alleged voter registration irregularities in Kolathur (Tamil Nadu) and Mainpuri (UP), demanding the resignations of CM M K Stalin and SP's Dimple Yadav for "rigging" elections. Oppn-backed BJP MP Rudy wins Constitution Club poll

New Delhi: The result of the high-profile 'BJP versus BJP' Constitution Club election is out, with BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy emerging victorious over his party colleague and former MP Sanjeev Balyan , but it also brought to the fore the caste lobbies and divisions at work within the ruling party. Rudy won the election by 102 votes over Balyan for the post of secretary (administration). Rudy, who has been at the helm of the Constitution Club for more than two decades, faced a challenger from his own party. A usual club election became high-profile because of the voters, more than the candidates involved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, along with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, came to vote in the afternoon and presumably supported Rudy. From BJP's side, Union home minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and several Union ministers cast their votes. With some party leaders actively backing Balyan, Rudy's candidature appeared to be an 'anti-establishment' one and that attracted the entire Opposition to back him in the election. Live Events Post-victory, Rudy admitted that his panel has MPs and former MPs from all parties and voters voted across party lines. Among the different issues discussed at the INDIA bloc dinner organised by Kharge, Rudy's candidature was mentioned, and a consensus was reached to back him in the elections. Another dinner in support of Balyan took place at the residence of CM Ramesh where leaders from the southern part of the country gathered to support Balyan. Dubey was the face behind Balyan who claimed on Tuesday morning that Balyan will win. Sources from both sides told ET that it appeared that BJP's brass was behind Balyan and that made the election interesting. During counting, two BJP MPs from Western UP - Satish Gautam and Bhola Singh - stayed inside the counting room in support of Balyan. The election also pointed to the caste lobbies and divisions. With Rudy being a Thakur, it was evident that BJP leaders from the same caste were working for Rudy's victory, with some claiming that he enjoyed the support of a BJP regional satrap from his caste. Several current and former MPs from Bihar landed up in Delhi to vote for Rudy as some made it a 'Bihar Pride' issue. Lok Sabha Elections Redux This election was a postscript of the Lok Sabha battle where Balyan lost from Muzaffarnagar with BJP Thakur leader Sangeet Som openly opposing him. The club election was not expected to be on caste lines in the beginning. But with time, the play changed into a caste and state battle, something that the party has not been able to cover up in the recent past. BIHAR POLL TALKING POINT With Bihar polls approaching, the Opposition may try to present the fact that a person from the state, especially from the Thakur community, was sidelined by his own party in a club poll.

Congress's 'vote chori' campaign hit or flop? Big debate on News Today

The big talking point of this episode of News Today is Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's vote 'chori' allegations. Just a day after the Congress announced a nationwide campaign against alleged rigging of voter lists, the BJP hit back by targeting Sonia Gandhi. BJP leader Amit Malviya in a message on X claimed the Congress MP's name was included in the voter list in 1980 when she was still not an Indian citizen. So, has Congress's vote chori campaign rattled the BJP? Congress's vote chori campaign a hit or a flop? Is the Election Commission caught in the political crossfire? Watch as experts discuss these and more in this episode of News Today.
