Navika Sagar Parikrama II voyage unaffected by container ship's capsizing on Kerala coast
Steered by lieutenant commanders Dilna K, who hails from Kozhikode in Kerala, and Pondicherry-native Roopa A, the vessel was slated to return to Goa this week, thus completing the second Navika Sagar Parikrama mission of the Indian Navy - a circumnavigation of the globe by women officers.
Though Tarini's location was withheld for the past many weeks on account of the ongoing Operation Sindoor, sailing enthusiasts had estimated that the duo, fondly called DilRoo, were just off the coast of Kerala, and very likely near these affected waters.
'INSV Tarini is sailing in the same weather that… capsized this great ship,' a sailing veteran wrote. Another pointed to how 'containers, which had gotten detached from the ship and are now floating in the waters half-submerged, could mean dangerous navigation.'
However, an official attached to the Navika Sagar Parikrama mission has confirmed to TNIE that 'DilRoo are indeed safe and that they have already passed ELSA.' He also added that the flag-in ceremony will take place as earlier scheduled.
Another official told TNIE that instructions were already relayed to INSV Tarini 'to stay far away from the coast until it's time to enter Goa.' This, he clarified, was to avoid getting in the way of rescue and reconnaissance efforts surrounding the MSC ELSA 3 incident.
It was on October 2 last year that INSV Tarini departed for its ambitious voyage around the world. On its successful completion on Thursday, DilRoo will have covered over 21,600 nautical miles (approx 40,000 km) relying solely on wind power.
The voyage is the fourth expedition in the Navy's Sagar Parikrama series, and the second to be steered by an all-woman team.

Doorstep delivery of ration items begins across Tamil Nadu, 1.3L to benefit
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday launched the Thayumanavar Scheme, which delivers essential PDS commodities like rice, sugar, wheat, palmolein oil, and toor dal at the doorsteps of senior citizens (aged 70 and above) and persons with disabilities, across the state. Marking the launch of the event, Stalin flagged off vehicles carrying goods to beneficiaries from Gopal Nagar, Tondiarpet, and Sathya Nagar. He also interacted with a few beneficiaries directly. The initiative was first reported by TNIE on June 17. The PDS items will be delivered to beneficiaries on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin launched the scheme in his Chepauk-Triplicane constituency by flagging off vehicles delivering commodities to 2,467 beneficiaries. Ministers in other districts also inaugurated the initiative by flagging off vehicles in their respective regions. Of the state's 2.3 crore ration cards, covering seven crore people, 16.7 lakh cards (benefiting 21.7 lakh people) are eligible under the scheme. This includes 15.8 lakh family cards with at least one elderly member (20.4 lakh beneficiaries) and 91,969 cards with at least one differently-abled member (1.3 lakh beneficiaries). Expressing joy over the scheme's launch, the chief minister in a video message said, 'We do not believe that our duty ends with announcing a new scheme – we ensure it reaches the last person in society,' noting that the initiative was conceived after recognising the difficulties faced by the elderly and differently-abled in accessing fair price shops. Despite the additional annual expenditure of Rs 30.16 crore, Stalin said the government considers this a life-saving responsibility. Calling it the 'biggest service' of the co-operation department, he hailed the dedication of its staff and officials in making it possible.
