Hindustan Times5 days ago
The BCCI have announced the latest squad for India's U-19 unit, ahead of the tour of Australia later this year. Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre continues to take the responsibility of captaincy for the ODI and Test teams, while 14-year-old upcoming superstar Vaibhav Suryavanshi remains the biggest draw, and will be given the chance to show his ability on Australian pitches. Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre will be back in action for India U19 as they tour Australia for a multi-format series.
Around the dynamic opening duo of Mhatre and Suryavanshi remains the core of the team that performed strongly in England this summer, including vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra as well standout performers Abhigyan Kundu with the gloves and all-rounder RS Ambrish.

India are set for three Youth ODIs, the first of which will begin on September 21. All three matches of the series will be played at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane, as will the first of two Youth Tests. The second match of the Youth Test series, where the games will be four days long, will take place at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
Suryavanshi already has a taste of success against the Australians, having plundered a 58-ball century in their Youth Test in Chennai in 2024, in his signature attacking and flourishing style. However, he will want to prove his mettle in red ball cricket after having a quiet pair of matches in England this month.
However, Suryavanshi was the top-scorer and on top form in the Youth ODIs, where he was top-scorer in the five-match series as India U19 won the series 3-2. Mhatre, meanwhile, top-scored in the two Tests with 340 runs, as both matches ended in well-contested draws. The batter, who already represents Mumbai at a senior level in the domestic circuit, will retain captaincy duties as well.

FedEx Cup playoff field set; Gary Woodland, Adam Scott miss cut

The PGA Tour solidified its field of 70 golfers for the FedEx Cup playoffs following the final round of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, and Gary Woodland was among a host of notable names that failed to qualify. HT Image Germany's Matti Schmid began the regular-season finale sitting 70th in the points standings, and he finished exactly where he started after tying for 31st in the tournament. Chris Kirk was the only player to climb in from outside the top 70. He tied for fifth at 14 under with four rounds in the 60s, and it was enough to boost him from 73rd entering the week to 61st. The one player who lost his spot: South Korea's Byeong Hun An, who missed the cut at the Wyndham and dropped from 69th to 74th in points as a result. Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, had an outside shot of entering the top 70 as he began the tournament in 75th place. Woodland opened with rounds of 67 and 64 to be near the top of the leaderboard after Friday, but back-to-back 70s on the weekend weren't enough. He tied for 23rd at the Wyndham and finished the season 72nd in points. Woodland was attempting to make the playoffs for the first time since he underwent surgery for a brain lesion in 2023. The first man out was Davis Thompson, who nearly rocketed from 78th place by tying for 11th at the Wyndham. Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark had a fine season and contended at last month's Open Championship but finished 73rd in points. Australian Adam Scott fired a 65 on the first day of the Wyndham but was pedestrian from there. He needed a victory to catapult from 85th to the top 70, but instead dropped back to 90th in points at season's end. Further down the list were Joel Dahmen (No. 93), South Korea's Tom Kim (No. 94) and Max Homa (No. 111). Defending FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler holds a large lead over Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy as the top 70 players head to the FedEx St. Jude Championship this week in Memphis, Tenn. The next number to watch is No. 50, as only the top 50 after Memphis will advance to the second leg of the playoffs. Australia's Min Woo Lee currently holds the 50th spot. Notable players currently on the outside include Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas (No. 56), Tony Finau (No. 60) and Rickie Fowler (No. 64). --Field Level Media

Bumrah fit, available for Asia Cup

MUMBAI: Apart from India's dramatic win over England in the fifth Test to level the series 2-2, Indian fans would be relieved that pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is fit and fine. Bumrah sat out the Oval Test to manage his workload and not due to any injury, it is learnt. He is available for the Asia Cup T20 tournament next month. Jasprit Bumrah. (PTI) 'As announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar at the time of the team selection, the decision on the number of Tests Bumrah will be able to play was taken in advance by the medical and fitness team. If he was injured, he would be going to BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for recovery and rehab,' an official with knowledge of the issue told HT when contacted. After Bumrah played the first and third Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, the team management had the choice of playing him in the fourth or the final Test. With India trailing 2-1, coach Gautam Gambhir and support staff decided to field the fast bowler in the Manchester game. Bumrah bowled a total of 119.4 overs in the three Tests. With just three days between the last two Tests, it was decided to rest the bowler who played in all five Tests on the 2024-25 tour of Australia, breaking down in the final game in Sydney. Bumrah took 14 wickets in the England series with five-wicket hauls at Leeds and Lord's. The Gujarat player has been sensational for India across formats and lethal in Tests with 219 wickets in just 48 matches at an average of 19.82 and a strike rate of 42.6, but has battled fitness issues, including back injury that needed surgery. Careful about their strike bowler's workload, the team managements have been selective, getting him to play mainly in marquee ICC events and important bilateral fixtures. The Asia Cup begins on September 9.

1st Time In 93 Years: Mohammed Siraj Helps India Script Dramatic Record At The Oval

London: Mohammed Siraj's strong-hearted effort across five Tests reflected in his numbers as well, returning with 23 wickets to go equal with Jasprit Bumrah as an Indian bowler with most wickets in a Test series in England. Bumrah achieved the feat during the 2021-22 series to go past Bhuvneshwar Kumar (19). Siraj is also the highest wicket-taker of the newly-minted Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which ended with a 2-2 verdict after India's epic six-run win win at the Oval here on Monday, followed by England's Josh Tongue (19). Beyond the individual achievements, India also set some team records during the drawn five-match series. Narrowest win The six-run win that they scored at the Oval was India's smallest in terms of runs in Test cricket, surpassing the 13-run victory that they had achieved against Australia at Mumbai in 2004. Meanwhile, India made a total of 3,809 runs in this series, which is the most ever scored by a team in a five-match Test series. Winless streak India have also managed to extend England's winless streak in Test rubbers against them to four dating back to 2018. This is England's second longest barren run in the traditional format after they went winless in five series between 1996 and 2011. Root equals Gavaskar Senior England batter Joe Root's 104 in the second innings of the Oval Test was his 13th hundred against India in Tests and 16th overall, going equal with Australian Steve Smith for the most number of centuries against India in international cricket. Root also equalled batting legend Sunil Gavaskar's record of making 13 hundreds against the West Indies, and now he has only Don Bradman (19 hundreds vs England) ahead of him for most Test hundreds against a single nation. Root also became the first batter to score 6000 runs in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC). The Gill effect India skipper Shubman Gill had a windfall series, scoring 754 runs, along the way overcoming two towering batters from the yore — Gavaskar and former England captain Graham Gooch. Of course, Gill is the highest run-getter in the series. The aggregate saw the elegant right-hander going past Gavaskar's tally of 732 runs to become the Indian captain with most runs in a Test series. Gill also broke Gooch's 35-year-old record (752 runs) for most runs in a Test series between India and England.
