Nato chief to urge 400% rise in air defence
Nato head Mark Rutte will on Monday call for a 'quantum leap' in defence capacities including a '400 per cent increase' in air and missile defence which 'protects' the alliance against Russia.
'We see in Ukraine how Russia delivers terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies,' the Nato Secretary General Rutte was to say in a speech to the Chatham House think-tank in London, according to comments released in a statement.
To maintain credible deterrence and defence, Nato needs 'a 400 per cent increase in air and missile defence'.
'The fact is, we need a quantum leap in our collective defence,' he was to say.
Rutte will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday ahead of his speech, their second Downing Street talks since Starmer came to power in July last year.
His comments come ahead of a Nato summit in the Netherlands this month.
US President Donald Trump is pressurising alliance members to announce a major boost in their military budgets.

US and China begin crunch trade talks in London amid simmering tensions
Top economic officials from China and the United States have kick-started a crucial round of trade talks in London, as the world watches closely to see if the two sides can agree to roll back their 'chokehold' controls over critical minerals and advanced technologies. The Chinese and American delegations – led by China's vice-premier, He Lifeng, alongside US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer – met Monday morning, local time, according to Xinhua. The meeting was scheduled after a phone call between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump last week, during which the two leaders agreed to push forward negotiations to resolve their ongoing trade disputes. Since the deal in Geneva – which saw both sides agree to drastically scale back tariffs on each other's goods for 90 days – Washington has banned the use of advanced Chinese-made microchips and placed new restrictions on the sale of chip design technologies to China. US sales of some jet engine-related technologies to China have also been suspended, according to media reports.

Russia launches 479 drones, highest overnight number since war began, says Ukraine
Russia launched 479 drones at Ukraine in the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the three-year war, the Ukrainian air force said on Monday, as the Kremlin presses its summer offensive against the backdrop of direct peace talks. As well as drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas of Ukraine. Three people were killed in Kyiv and over a dozen were wounded. First responders were among the casualties. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, posted casualty figures on Telegram. Kyiv Metro – whose deep tunnels are used as shelters – said that its infrastructure had been damaged and one of the key lines was partially closed. Ukraine's air force said its air defences destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight on Sunday night, claiming that only 10 hit their target. It was not possible to independently verify the claims.
