Boy, 17, was safely sleeping in luxurious Miami apartment... until killer stranger sneaked into skyscraper
A teenage boy was sleeping soundly in a luxurious Miami high-rise home when a stranger sneaked into the building and knifed him to death in his bed.
Dominic Ferrell, 17, was sleeping in the lavish Icon Brickell building in Miami in the early hours of Sunday with his door unlocked when suspect Kyrill Kehl, 26, managed to get inside.
Kehl did not have a key fob for the secure building or its elevator.
He piggybacked in behind a group of residents around 2am and rode the elevator up with them before getting out on a random floor.
Next Kehl tried to open a number of units to test their locks.
Ferrell's apartment on the 34th floor was unlocked at the time, and Kehl entered without using force before savagely stabbing him numerous times.
In reported surveillance footage that has not been released to the public, investigators said Kehl was then seen sprinting from the apartment, and several knives were found at the scene.
According to police, Ferrell was found dead in his bed by a witness who lived with him. It is unclear if the witness was a family member, and they have not been named.
The Miami Herald reported that the apartment where Ferrell was killed was a 'short term rental.'
In a shock twist to the violent episode, cops said Kehl ran to a nearby construction site before apparently falling off an upper level and dying.
Investigators said Kehl had a history of mental illness, but have not established a motive for the killing and believe he had no prior contact with Ferrell before the attack.
It is unclear if he purposefully jumped to his death at the construction site or accidentally fell.
Police said they found his body at the construction site the next morning after following a trail of blood from the scene of Farrell's slaying.
Kehl had worked at military defense giant Northrop Grumman from March 2022 to September 2024 in the company's Marine Systems, according to a LinkedIn profile reported to be Kehl's.
According to a GoFundMe page first cited by the Miami Herald, Kehl went on to fundraise to travel to India in November 2024 when he left the defense contractor.
He wrote of using his funds to donate clothing to those in need, and raised over $3,000 to bring impoverished communities in Varanasi.
Investigators said Kehl had travelled from Arizona to Miami before the murder, and said it is unclear how he got there or if he had any ties to the area. A toxicology report is pending to establish if Kehl was on drugs or alcohol at the time of the murder.
Tributes have poured in for Ferrell as his loved ones say they are devastated by the random killing.
His mother, who has not been named, told NBC6 that she 'had nothing to say' as she came to terms with the reality of the senseless slaying.
Ferrell was a student at Miami Beach Senior High and had opened a dog walking business in the vacation hotspot in January 2023.
Following the shocking killing, residents in the Icon Brickell building and the surrounding area say they have recently been raising the alarm over safety issued in the luxury apartment complex, which comprises of three high rise skyscrapers.
'People are concerned with safety,' Christian Tang, owner of the Brickell & Downtown Miami Community Group, told NBC6.
'They feel uneasy with what's going on around the community in recent incidents in the last two, three, four months.'
These incidents reportedly included an attempted rape at an apartment blocks away from Farrell's building last month.
'There are a lot of issues with the security around here, especially since it's supposed to be a luxury area,' added Icon Brickell resident Marianne Sucre to the Miami Herald.
'This kind of stuff has been happening a lot . . . You always hear that someone is approached or yelled at or [hear of] a lot of violent situations.'
In a statement following the discovery of Kehl's body, Miami Police Chief Manny Morales assured residents there is no threat to public safety and clarified that the suspect and victim did not know each other.
'We know for a fact that they did not know each other. They were strangers and this guy was just going from apartment to apartment, opening and knocking on doors, so again it is very important to lock your doors and do not open them to strangers,' Morales said.

A Republican member of South Carolina's state house whom prosecutors say used the screen name 'joebidennnn69' has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of distributing sexual abuse material involving children. RJ May was arrested at his Lexington county home after a lengthy investigation and was ordered Thursday by a federal judge to remain jailed until his trial. The three-term Republican is accused of using 'joebidennnn69' to exchange 220 files of toddlers and young children involved in sex acts on the Kik social media network for about five days in spring 2024, according to court documents that graphically detailed the videos. During that timeframe, Joe Biden was in the final year of his presidency before May's fellow Republican Donald Trump won the November 2024 election to return to the White House in January. Each charge against May carries a five-to-20-year prison sentence upon conviction. Prosecutors suggested May could spend more than a decade in prison if found guilty. The files at the center of the case were uploaded and downloaded using May's home wifi network and his cellphone, prosecutors said. Some were hidden by the use of a private network, but others were directly linked to his internet addresses. At his arraignment, May's lawyer suggested someone could have used the wifi password that was shown on a board behind a photo May's wife may have posted online. Attorney Dayne Phillips also suggested investigators didn't link each Kik message directly to May. Double tragedy off Maine coast after fisherman and girlfriend encountered SHIPWRECK while gathering clams
A fishing boat captain and his girlfriend have died after encountering a shipwreck off the coast of Cape Cod. Shawn Arsenault, 64, and Felicia Daley, 54, vanished without a trace after setting off from Rock Harbor in Orleans, Massachusetts to go clamming on Sunday. A frantic manhunt was launched for the pair, with officials finally finding Arsenault's sunken boat three days later about five miles away, near Eastham. The couple were found inside the 'wheelhouse' of the boat, the captain's brother Paul Arsenault told the Boston Globe. They were not wearing life jackets and had not made a distress call, he added. Paul suspects his brother's beloved Seahorse, a 30-foot white-hulled vessel, got 'hooked up on a wreck that was on the bottom of the ocean'. He thinks the incident 'happened so fast' that Arsenault and Daley were unable to contact emergency services for help. The Coast Guard is also investigating reports that the fisherman threw electronic electronic equipment into the water before leaving the harbor. Arsenault and Daley planned to go clamming near the Target Ship Wreck in Cape Cod Bay aboard the Seahorse, which features a painted mermaid on the bow. They were reported missing on Tuesday morning when the harbormaster saw Arsenault's truck still parked at marina two days after the Seahorse left the harbor. Authorities began to search for the pair at the boat's last known location, which according to a cell phone ping was roughly two miles offshore from Chatham. Search crews were set to both sides of the harbor because 'phone pings have a high degree of variability'. The Coast Guard issued an urgent emergency alert and carried out an extensive search of Cape Cod Bay's fishing area overnight. A recreational fisherman spotted Arsenault's missing boat on Wednesday morning which, according to the Coast Guard, was found 'off shore inside the bay'. The cellphone ping 'put them offshore in Chatham on the wrong side', a spokesperson added. Officials previously said weather likely wasn't a factor in their disappearance, although search efforts were hampered by fog and thunderstorms. Paul said his brother and Daley, who had been dating for several months, were both experienced on boats. He told the newspaper that owning the Seahorse was 'Shawn's dream' and Sunday marked 'only his third time out' on the boat. Arsenault recently got 'new radar' and a 'fish finder', Paul added, noting his brother 'was excited' about his new equipment. Witnesses reported seeing Arsenault throw equipment overboard when he left the dock on Sunday morning. 'I noticed in the surf there was something floating, so I went down to see what it was, and it turned out to be a GPS unit off of a boat,' local resident Sam Miller, who spotted the device while walking along the beach with her father told CBS Boston. 'We could tell it was a GPS unit off a boat... it had blue tape on it that said 'F/V Seahorse.' The grieving brother also paid tribute to Arsenault and his partner, whom he claims were 'absolutely nuts about each other'. He hailed the fishing captain as a 'hero' and said he was 'very loved in his community', sharing how Arsenault would go out of his way to help those in need. 'There was one gentleman with Parkinson's ... my brother would cook him dinner every night and walk it down to him,' he told the newspaper. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Arsenault also 'loved being on the water,' Paul explained, telling WCVB: 'He loved the excitement. He loved being his own boss. He loved being a captain.' If it got hung up on a drag or something like that, it'd go right over,' charter operator Hap Farrell to WCVB. 'The level of support from our maritime response partners and members from the fishing and local community was remarkable. Protests over the Trump-mandated immigration sweeps extended over the weekend with Waymo Jaguar I-PACE vehicles destroyed and torched. One photographer on the seen spotted a person waving the Mexican flag as the flames spread across the self-driving ride-hailing car. President Sheinbaum's remarks come as the nationwide rally, dubbed 'No Kings,' are scheduled to take place Saturday. 'We don't agree with violent actions. We've never agreed with them. They lead nowhere. Mexicans and everyone else, when demonstrating, it should always be peaceful.'
