Mom honors slain son's legacy, announces Dominic Paul Maron Ferrell Foundation at Miami memorial
The mother of a teen who was fatally stabbed while he slept at his dad's Brickell condo back in June publicly honored her son's life and legacy Wednesday afternoon shortly before a memorial Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Miami. Christine Maron said of her son Dominic Ferrel, "His death will not overshadow the love, light, and joy he brought to each and every one of us." Ferrell, 17, was killed in an unprovoked attack on June 8. Authorities said the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Kyrill Kehl, entered the building without a key fob and targeted the apartment at random. The two did not know each other. The memorial service provided an opportunity for the Miami community to say goodbye to Ferrell, who lived in the city for the past four years. His formal funeral services were previously held in California. In her remarks, Maron announced the launch of the Dominic Paul Maron Ferrell Foundation. The foundation will award four annual scholarships to students who demonstrate the qualities she said defined her son: empathy, kindness, respect, academic achievement, and sportsmanship. The Dominic Paul Maron Ferrell Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to one eighth-grade student at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, as well as graduating seniors at Immaculata-La Salle High School, Las Lomas High School and Miami Beach Senior High School. "This vision will be carried forward by Dominic's siblings—Bianca, Luca, and Dante," she said. "His legacy will outlive us all, helping others realize the promise of a better tomorrow." Community gathers to mourn, remember Family, friends and community members gathered at the church in The Roads neighborhood for the 5 p.m. service. Dominic was a former student of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and most recently attended Miami Beach Senior High, where he was known for his kindness and athleticism.

The mother of a 17-year-old who was stabbed to death earlier this month inside a luxury Brickell high-rise will speak publicly for the first time Monday as her legal team launches an investigation into the building's security protocols. Christine Maron, the Dominic Ferrell's mother, was set to appear at 11 a.m. at The Haggard Law Firm in Coral Gables, where she'll be joined by crime victim attorney Michael Haggard. The firm, now representing Maron, said it's pursuing legal action over what it describes as "apparent negligent security" at the Icon Brickell tower where Ferrell was killed. Legal team to outline claims of negligent security Haggard is expected to outline details surrounding the June 9 murder, the law firm's probe into safety failures at the high-rise, and the legal steps being taken on behalf of Maron. Ferrell was found dead in an apartment on the 34th floor of the Icon complex, located at 485 Brickell Avenue. According to Miami police, the teen was stabbed to death in his sleep. Another person was also asleep in the unit at the time of the attack. Miami Police says suspect entered unlocked unit, stabbed victim Police said the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Kyrill R. Kehl, had arrived in South Florida from Arizona two days earlier and was not staying at the building. Surveillance video showed Kehl loitering in the lobby before entering an elevator with residents, knocking on multiple doors, and eventually walking into the unlocked unit where Ferrell was sleeping. "He then goes to the bedroom where the 17-year-old is sleeping and stabs him to death," Miami Police Officer Michael Vega said. Suspect found dead after fleeing to nearby Brickell construction site Kehl fled the scene and was later found dead at a nearby construction site, where police say he either fell or jumped. Stranger who viciously killed sleeping Florida teen lived in 'horror movie' apartment, landlord says - as cops admit they are bewildered over random slaying
A stranger who killed a sleeping teenage boy in Florida lived in an apartment reminiscent of a horror movie as his former landlord said he always had an off feeling about him. Kyrill Kehl, 26, killed Dominic Ferrell, 17, in his 34th floor apartment in the Icon Brickell building in Miami while he sleept after the killer bypassed security and got on the elevator with other residents on June 8. Kehl started on the 47th floor, trying doors until he reached Ferrell's on the 34th and found it open. Upon entering, he stabbed the sleeping teen to death before eventually falling hundreds of feet to his death from a different building when he fled. His former landlord, Christian, said after seeing the news that he always had a weird feeling about his tenant, and even predicted that Kehl would end up making headlines. 'I remember specifically leaving the building and saying: "I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of this dude." And I said: "Watch, this motherf**ker is gonna be on the news one day,"' he told WSVN. 'I had this weird inkling feeling of like, Dahmer. I literally had this thought like: "Oh my God, we're dealing with Dahmer here." Jeffrey Dahmer vibes.' Kehl was Christian and his business partner's first tenant and the landlord said the young man lived in absolute filth and hid an automatic weapon in his apartment. The killer's fridge was filled with couch cushion-sized chunks of meat that were rotting and covered in maggots. The apartment also had a strong odor, he said. His former landlord, Christian (pictured), said he always had a weird feeling about his tenant. Kehl was Christian and his business partner's first tenant and the landlord said the young man lived in absolute filth. 'It was like something out of a horror movie,' he said 'How could anybody live in here with this smell? It smells like something is rotting,' Christian told the outlet. 'It was like something out of a horror movie.' Christian also recalled an encounter with the strange young man once inside the apartment. As the landlord approach the closet, Kehl jumped in front of him ad told him: 'Don't go in there.' The contents of the closet are unknown. The landlord feels guilt for not being able to prevent the tragedy, but he said his tenant never did anything illegal or that would have prompted him or his business partner to call the authorities. 'I'm still in disbelief, because I feel like, had we done something, but there's no way,' he told the outlet. 'There's no telling whether you know for sure you're in the presence of a murderer.' Surveillance footage that has not been released to the public allegedly showed Kehl seen sprinting from the apartment after the murder and several knives were found at the scene, investigators said. Ferrell was found dead in his bed by his father, Jon Ferrell, who was also asleep at the time of the attack. The boy was visiting his father against his mother's wishes that day, as she had gotten a temporary restraining order against Jon, according to the Miami Herald. The apartment where Ferrell was killed was a short-term rental. 'Consistent with Dominic's extraordinary empathy and our loving bond, he chose to join me on the night of this horrific event. Of course, my wife and I will cooperate with law enforcement as we get to the bottom of this senseless murder,' Jon said in a statement. Police said they found Kehl's body at the construction site the next morning after following a trail of blood from the scene of Farrell's slaying. Ahead of Father's Day, Jon encouraged parents to 'hug your children and appreciate every precious moment you have with them.' He also revealed the day of the murder, he and his son were discussing what they're plans were for Father's Day and had planned a family golf game.

‘Hug your children': Father speaks out on his teen son's slaying in Brickell condo
Days before Father's Day, the heartbroken dad of Dominic Ferrell, the 17-year-old stabbed to death in a Brickell condo, is speaking out to thank those supporting his family, to condemn the violent killing and to urge parents to hold their children close. 'On this Father's Day, I pray that you hug your children and appreciate every precious moment you have with them,' Jon Ferrell said in a Friday afternoon statement. Police have said Dominic was killed in his sleep, stabbed with a kitchen knife by 26-year-old Kyrill Kehl in a condo on the 34th floor of Tower 3 of the Icon Residences by SS Vacation Rentals at 485 Brickell Ave. The stabbing happened around 2:15 last Sunday morning. Jon was with his son and asleep in the condo when his son, who had just finished his junior year at Miami Beach Senior High, was killed. Shortly after, Kehl would fall to his death at a neighboring building — police have yet to say if the fall was intentional or accidental. Jon and Dominic, who was the eldest of four children, weren't supposed to be seeing each other that day. Christine Maron, Dominic's mother, had gotten a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband in May, forbidding him from having contact with her or their children. Dominic visited his father against Maron's wishes, Maron's court filing says. 'All families have differences,' he said. 'Consistent with Dominic's extraordinary empathy and our loving bond, he chose to join me on the night of this horrific event. Of course, my wife and I will cooperate with law enforcement as we get to the bottom of this senseless murder.' Jon said that the night before, he and Dominic were making plans for Father's Day, which included a golf game with the entire family. Kehl had entered through the lobby, and waited until two men went up on the elevator, Miami Police said. He got off on the 47th floor, before making his way to the 34th floor. Tower 3 has both condo units, some of which are rented through Airbnb, and hotel rooms as it's the site of the W Miami Hotel. 'It is unimaginable to us that such a violent and deranged man was able to enter the lobby, elevator, and ultimately, the residential floors of the Icon Residences,' he said. 'I chose to stay at this well-known building because of my expectation of safety and security. I look forward to the Miami Police Department's findings for the closure our family so desperately needs.' Dozens have expressed their condolences for Dominic, a rising senior at Miami Beach High who aspired to attend the University of Florida and one day own a business. Russ Rywell, the longtime Beach High speech and debate teacher and coach, was impressed with how Dominic would prepare for a debate. 'He wasn't the type of [student] to not care about schoolwork or to just slide by,' Rywell told the Herald. '...He always put in effort and had a good attitude.'
