Zurich councilor indicted for shooting at Madonna and child poster
The Zurich public prosecutor's office confirmed the indictment of Sanija Ameti to The Associated Press on Monday. Her actions in September caused an uproar, prompting her to resign from the local leadership of the Green-Liberal party. Ameti is now listed as an independent on the website of the municipal council.
A redacted copy of the indictment, posted by the activist group Mass Voll, said Ameti was accused of 'disturbing religious freedom' and that prosecutors were seeking a fine and penalty equivalent to 12,500 Swiss francs (about $15,600).
The Swiss criminal code says anyone who 'publicly and maliciously insults or mocks the religious convictions of others' or 'maliciously desecrates objects of religious veneration' is liable to a monetary penalty, the indictment copy stated.
A top leader with Operation Libero, a political movement Ameti co-founded that describes itself as liberal and progressive, did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
Ameti apologized at the time and quickly pulled down the images after posting them on Instagram and reportedly sought police protection against threats after the incident. She later said she had been practicing shots and found the poster 'big enough' for a suitable target.
The poster, an advertisement, showed details of the work 'Madonna with Child and the Archangel Michael' by 14th-century Italian painter Tommaso del Mazza before a sale.

999 call handler's voice cloned by AI as part of Russian disinformation campaign
A British 999 call handler's voice was cloned using AI and used as part of a Russian online disinformation campaign. Speaking to the BBC as part of a BBC Verify investigation released on Thursday (31 July), emergency medical advisor Aaron said he was shocked when he found out his voice was being used as part of a campaign designed to spread fear ahead of Poland 's presidential election in May. 'I don't think my friends or family would be able to tell it's fake. I think they probably would have believed it's real.' His voice was taken from a video posted by the North West Ambulance Service which featured Aaron discussing emergency services available during the Easter holidays.

Jealous ex who stabbed father-of-six to death in drug-fuelled rage when she found his Tinder profile on Christmas Day is jailed
A jealous ex who murdered a father-of-six after she found his Tinder profile on Christmas Day has been jailed. Kirsty Carless, 33, plunged a knife into 31-year-old Louis Price's heart in the early hours of December 25, 2024, in an attack fuelled by cocaine and alcohol. She had been drinking double vodka and cokes with a male friend at the pub before going back to his home to have sex multiple times. At around 1.30am on Christmas Day, a friend sent her a screenshot of Mr Price's Tinder profile. In a furious rage Carless armed herself with a kitchen knife and ordered a taxi to his parents' house to confront him. Harrowing CCTV footage shows Carless storming up towards the house and 'stalking' Mr Price around the garden while menacingly waving the knife towards his face. Seconds later the taxi driver heard a 'very loud and prolonged' scream before Carless emerged for the house 'anxious and sweating' after leaving Mr Price to die on the conservatory floor. Carless then went to her parents house where she admitted what she had done and called 999. Bodycam footage of her arrest shows the remorseless killer sitting on a sofa as a police officer places her in handcuffs. Carless pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murdering her ex, instead claiming he had taken money from her and planned to destroy the caravan he was living in. She has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years after she was convicted of murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. She was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm over a previous incident, but cleared of intentional strangulation.

Italy's opposition warns against involving SpaceX in satellite update
ROME, July 31 (Reuters) - Italy's main opposition Democratic Party (PD) has warned Giorgia Meloni's ruling coalition against involving Elon Musk's SpaceX in the update of a satellite programme, parliamentary documents show, saying the move would pose national security risks. A lower house defence committee approved this week a government proposal which includes replacing an old satellite system, named SICRAL, with a new one. The system, first launched in 2001, has been developed by Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space, two joint ventures between Italy's aerospace and defence group Leonardo ( opens new tab and France's Thales ( opens new tab. The PD asked the government to make clear that SpaceX would not be called in to help launch the SICRAL 3 satellite into orbit. Defence Undersecretary Isabella Rauti said the administration would assess its options, but SpaceX was the most advanced company available on the market. "We only want Italian or European companies to be involved in a security matter such as SICRAL," PD lawmaker and defence committee member Stefano Graziano told Reuters. His party abstained from the vote. Italy's opposition parties have repeatedly urged the government to prevent Musk and his companies from becoming involved in national security matters, amid concerns over the influence he wields through his Starlink satellite service. Europe has been rushing to find viable alternatives to SpaceX's low orbit satellites for communications and intelligence while launching platforms to ensure independent access to space, as pan-European projects still lag behind. Musk, a friend of Prime Minister Meloni, held talks with Italian officials over a potential telecommunications contract, but discussions stalled earlier this year amid mounting political controversy. "The deployment of the SICRAL 3 satellite addresses the need to strengthen national connectivity and provide Italy with strategic independence in long-range communications," Rauti told Reuters. SpaceX did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on this story. The SICRAL system uses geostationary satellites for confidential strategic and tactical communications, to support defence missions both in Italy and abroad. The Italian government will invest a total 767 million euros ($878 million) through 2028 in the programme, the documents show. Rauti said the new satellite would be launched by the first half of 2027. ($1 = 0.8737 euros)
