On Friday, several mosques, including Nakhoda Mosque on Zakaria Street, where worshippers gathered after the Friday prayers to recite verses and offer collective dua, sought peace for the victims and strength for their grieving families. Several gurdwaras also held special prayers.
On Sunday, churches, including the Old Mission Church on RN Mukherjee Road, St John's Church on Council House Street, and the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Burrabazar, observed special prayers for the victims, their family members, and the people involved in rescue operations during their regular Sunday mass.
Devotees lit candles and prayed for the deceased and their loved ones in an atmosphere marked by quiet reflection and sorrow.
At St John's Church, Father Pradip Kumar Nanda led the Sunday service. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of so many lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash," said Rangan Dutta, church officer. "During our Sunday service, we offered prayers for the souls of the departed and comfort to their grieving families.
At times like these, we are reminded of our shared humanity, and we pray for healing, peace, and strength for all those affected," he added.
"Let us remember the distressed families of those passengers who were on the London-bound Air India flight which crashed on Thursday. May God's peace and comfort help them to cope with this tragedy. Also, let us pray for God's wisdom and strength for those who are helping the victims and families of this tragedy," was the prayer at the Old Mission Church.

Many city-based Durga Puja organisers also paid homage to the departed souls of the Ahmedabad plane crash victims on Sunday. Samaj Sebi Sangha, in their 80th year of puja, dedicated their Khuti Puja to the deceased and their family members of the tragic incident, where all the participating male members of the club were dressed in white clothes as a mark of respect. "We worship Maa Durga as 'Durgatinashini', who is the destroyer of all sufferings, eliminates hardships and obstacles.
We pray to her so that in the future this type of horrible incident should not happen again," said Arijit Maitra, general secretary of the club. Before the heart-breaking incident took place Maitra had planned to dedicate the event to all the fathers as it was organised on Father's Day.
Bhowanipur 75 Palli, during Sunday's theme banner release programme along with a blood donation camp, observed a minute of silence to honour the deceased before the beginning of the event on their 61st year of puja.
"We are all dumbfounded after the disastrous incident and what we can do more except pray to Maa," said Subir Das, club secretary. Soumojit Das, joint secretary of Entally Kanthal Bagan Sarbojonin, has already put up condolence hoardings in their locality and plans to pay homage to the crash victims during their upcoming Khuti Puja on June 27.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Joka organised a special prayer during the Sunday morning assembly which happened as per schedule worldwide. "Monks prayed for the strength for the families of the crash victims during the last 15 minutes of the assembly," said Manish Jasani, a senior devotee.

Saudi Flight With Hajj Pilgrims Lands Safely In Lucknow After Technical Snag

Lucknow: A flight carrying about 250 passengers, including Hajj pilgrims, from Saudi Arabia landed in Lucknow after it developed a technical snag on Sunday. Smoke was seen emanating from the left wheel as the Saudi Arabia Airlines flight landed at Lucknow airport on Sunday morning. The fault in the wheel was likely due to a leak in the hydraulic system. The plane, an Airbus A330-343, left Jeddah at 10:45 pm and reached Lucknow around 6:50 am, according to data from Flightradar24. In a separate incident, a Hyderabad-bound Lufthansa flight made a U-turn and landed back at Frankfurt airport last evening due to a bomb threat, said sources. The bomb threat was received about two hours after the flight, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, took off from the German city at 2.14 pm local time on Sunday. It was scheduled to land at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport early Monday. Lufthansa, however, claimed in a statement to the news agency ANI that it was forced to turn around since it did not receive a permit to land in Hyderabad. Last Thursday, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed into a building, killing all except one of the passengers.

Cockpit Voice Recorder Recovered From Air India Crash Site In Ahmedabad

Last Updated: The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the Air India crash site in Ahmedabad, days after the black box (DFDR) was found on a rooftop. In a significant development with the ongoing investigations into the Air India plane crash, the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the crash site in Ahmedabad. This comes hours after Air India confirmed that it had successfully established contact with the next of kin of all passengers and crew. CVR records radio transmissions and other sounds in the cockpit, such as conversations between the pilots and engine noises. The DGCA said its enhanced inspection will include checks of various systems and a review of take-off parameters of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India, owned by the Tata Group. Over 400 family members had already arrived in Ahmedabad and were being supported by dedicated teams on the ground. A black box of the London-bound Air India flight was recovered on June 13 from the rooftop of the medical college hostel, where the plane had crashed. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), without giving details, had confirmed that the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly known as the Black box, was recovered from the 'rooftop" at the crash site. The DFDR will help reconstruct the ill-fated flight's final moments and is crucial to determining how the disaster occurred. A horrific Air India plane crash led to the death of 241 onboard and another 24 people, including five MBBS students, on the ground. Forty-year-old British businessman from Leicester, Ramesh, was the sole survivor in the incident. Talking to DD News a day after the air disaster, Ramesh, originally a native of the coastal town of Diu adjoining Gujarat, said his seat, 11A, was close to an emergency door on the left side of the ill-fated plane. The aircraft came down seconds after take-off before falling inside the campus of the state-run BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area and going up in flames. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the scene of the crash and met the injured at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. He spent around 20 minutes at the crash site. As aviation experts discussed the possible causes of the crash, including loss of thrust in both engines of the 11-year-old aircraft, multiple bird strikes, or a potential flap issue, the Aviation watchdog DGCA ordered enhanced safety inspections of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet powered by GEnx engines. There are 26 Boeing 787- 8s and 7 Boeing 787- 9s in the Air India fleet. First Published: June 16, 2025, 10:19 IST
