Manuel Neuer's wife - 15 years his junior - steps away from her sport while he keeps his football career going at 39
Manuel Neuer's wife, Anika, has taken the decision to have a break from professional handball at the end of the season.
Anika, 24, has been plying her trade as a left-winger for ESV 1927 Regensburg, who are in the second-tier of women's handball in the country.
Having grown up with a strong passion for the sport, many fans will be left surprised that she has opted to walk away from it, at least temporarily, later this year.
Confirming the news in a statement, she said: 'The decision was very difficult for me. I really like the team and I really enjoy playing with the girls.
'I don't see the break as the end of my handball career; I just want to have more time for my son.
'I will miss the girls and handball very much, so I want to particularly enjoy the final games and finish our great season in the best possible way.'
Meanwhile, her coach, Bernhard Goldbach, said: 'It's simply impressive what Ani has achieved on and off the field this season.
'She came back from maternity leave stronger than ever and played in all of her season's games. We can only take our hats off to that.'
Anika has a strong upbringing centered around the sport with her father being the chairman of the supervisory board of HC Erlangen - one of the local clubs.
Anika and Manuel - who is 15 years senior to his wife - tied the knot in November 2023 and had welcomed the birth of their son Luca in March last year.
The ceremony was conducted in secret and an official announcement was never made, however Anika swiftly changed her surname to 'Neuer' on social media.
While she has taken the decision to walk away from the sport for the sake of their son, her husband will continue to play for Bayern Munich.
The German goalkeeper, however, has been sidelined with injury after injuring himself while celebrating during their 3-0 win over rivals Bayer Leverkusen back in March.
Neuer appeared to injure his calf while celebrating Jamal Musiala's goal on the night, and was withdrawn after 58 minutes.
Neuer recently signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern Munich that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2026, taking him into his 40s.
The relationship between the handball player and Bayern Munich's goalkeeper and team captain has stirred up much controversy.
Not only because of the 15-year age gap but also because Neuer left his wife of three years, Nina Weiss, for Anika.
In 2019, Weiss discovered her husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old fashion business student in Munich, who is also a handball sensation.
Weiss, who bears a striking resemblance to her ex-husband's new partner, ended her two-year marriage to the footballer and left their home in Munich for Berlin.
The pair reportedly met at the airport when they took a photo together and a romance blossomed from then.

‘Don't believe everything that's written' – Florian Wirtz hits out at Liverpool transfer rumours in 14-word statement
FLORIAN WIRTZ has hit out at reports claiming he wants to snatch a Liverpool star's shirt number to join the club. The German ace is on the brink of joining the Reds if they can strike a deal with Bayer Leverkusen. 3 Bayer have already rejected an offer worth £109million as they hold out for a British transfer record payment of £126m (€150 million). A report from Sky Sport Germany claimed the 22-year-old wanted to be given the No10 shirt if he joins the Anfield outfit - having already agreed personal terms. However, Wirtz has directly addressed that claim on social media. Taking to his Instagram story, he wrote: "Who says I want the 10 [emoji]. "I respect players. "Don't believe everything that's written," followed by a clown emoji. World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister is the current owner of the shirt, having taken it when he joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023. Wirtz wears the No10 for his club but wears the No17 for the German national team. Previous owners of the No10 shirt at Liverpool include Sadio Mane, Joe Cole, Michael Owen, John Barnes and Billy Liddell, among others. Arne Slot's promise that Wirtz would be the playmaker of Liverpool's team was reportedly a decisive factor in convincing him to join them over Bayern Munich or Manchester City. City pulled out of the race early after realising the cost of the overall package to land the German could set them back £252m. SunSport have looked at how he could fit in at Liverpool next season, partnering Mohamed Salah and Co. Wirtz will become the biggest English transfer of all time if Liverpool stump up the money Bayer are demanding to sell him. Liverpool have already announced the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from the club in a £29.5m deal. 3

Florian Wirtz tells fans 'don't believe everything' - and hits out at German press - as Liverpool prepare record bid for Bayer Leverkusen star
Florian Wirtz has urged fans to not 'believe everything' as negotiations continue over his proposed move to Liverpool. Liverpool remain in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Wirtz. Bayer want £120million and Liverpool are at £109m but Wirtz has made it clear he wants the move. The Germany star has been convinced by Arne Slot 's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. Should the Reds accede to Bayer's demands, Wirtz would become the most expensive signing in British football, overtaking the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo. Richard Hughes, Liverpool's Sporting Director, has proposed a package to his Leverkusen counterpart Simon Rolfes with easily attainable performance-related bonuses, such as Champions League qualification but the clubs are yet to agree a final fee. Now, Wirtz has taken to social media to hit out at the German press after one reporter suggested the forward would be looking to take Alexis Mac Allister's No 10 shirt should the move go through. A report in the German press suggested the star was keen to take the number if a move could be agreed 'Who says I want the 10,' Wirtz posted to his 3.3million Instagram followers. 'I respect players.' He added: 'Don't believe everything what's written,' accompanied by a clown emoji. The post comes after German journalist Florian Plettenberg of Sky suggested that Wirtz was looking to take Mac Allister's shirt number. He wrote on X on Monday: 'Florian Wirtz would like to wear the number 10 shirt at Liverpool. He currently wears it at Leverkusen as well and the number 17 shirt for Germany.' 17 is also taken at Liverpool, with Curtis Jones currently occupying that number. Talks between Bayer and Liverpool, meanwhile, continue as they attempt to find a middle ground. There is also a possibility that Bayer could bring a Liverpool player to Germany as part of the deal. Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah are both admired by Leverkusen, and either could be proposed as makeweight. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was appointed Leverkusen's new head coach last week after Xabi Alonso departed to take charge of Real Madrid. Ten Hag has been out of work since being sacked by United in October but has wasted little time in looking to the Premier League to reshape his new squad.
