Citing precedent, Bastar IG says CPI (Maoist) unlikely to get new gen secy after Basavaraju
As an example, the IG cited the fact that no clear names had emerged to replace the CPI (Maoist)'s Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) secretary, Ramanna, six years after his death. Ramanna reportedly died of a heart attack in the jungles of Bijapur in 2019. The assertions come 10 days after security forces, comprising District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel from Narayanpur, Dantewada, and Bijapur, killed Basavaraju and 26 other Maoists in a three-day encounter in Abujhmarh. Jagdalpur: No cadre of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) will come forward to take the place of its slain general secretary, Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju, Bastar range Inspector General (IG) of Police Sundar Raj Pattilingam said in an exclusive interview with ThePrint. 'After the end of the CPI (Maoist) general secretary Basavaraju, I don't think there will be any other cadre who will be coming forward to take that position. Because, in 2019, we have observed, after the demise of DKSZC general secretary, Ramanna, for the last almost six years, no one has come forward' to take his position, Pattilingam said. 'Though someone has been officiating or acting as a secretary, there has been no official communication from Maoist outfits… to name anyone as the secretary of DKZSC,' he added. Pattilingam, the seniormost police officer in the Bastar division, oversees anti-Naxal operations carried out in at least five of the seven districts of the region. It comprises Narayanpur, Kanker, Kondagaon, Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada and Bastar districts. 'I am seeing the same scenario for CPI (Maoist) general secretary also, because this organisation is facing its end and breathing its last breath. No one would come forward to fill the post as the general secretary of CPI (Maoist),' he said. He further said, 'It is not a constitutional post. It is not a constitutional body. The entire CPI (Maoist) outfit is a banned, illegal outfit. It doesn't need any leadership. 'Unknown will come forward, and this whole organisation is already in terrible shape. Its morale is hitting its lowest ever possible. They are facing a lot of defections from the cadres. So the entire organisation is in very bad shape.' Most of looted explosives recovered
Bhubaneswar: Security personnel on Friday recovered a substantial amount of the explosives recently looted by Maoists in Sundargarh district following a fierce gun-battle with the red rebels, police said. Around 200 packets of explosives, mostly gelatin sticks, were looted by Maoists at gun-point in K Balang police station area three days ago while those were being transported to a stone quarry for blasting rocks. The police had launched a search operation to locate the looted items. The joint efforts of nine teams of jawans belonging to Odisha Police's SOG and CRPF finally located the explosive materials in a dense forest in Jharkhand, around 3 km from Odisha border. 'We have recovered a substantial amount of the explosive materials looted from K Balang area,' Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said, adding that some other incriminating materials were also seized. The SP said there was no injury to any member of the search teams. Sources said the explosives were found at Tirilposh, located close to Saranda forest, on Odisha-Jharkhand inter-State boundary. The Odisha Police had earlier confirmed that Maoists from Jharkhand were involved in looting the explosives from a truck on Tuesday. According to the police, around 30 armed Maoists from Jharkhand hijacked the gelatin sticks-laden truck by holding the driver of the vehicle at gun-point. A day after the looting, Odisha DGP Y B Khurania and other senior police officers visited the spot and an NIA team started investigating the matter. Security forces from Odisha and Jharkhand, along with the CRPF personnel, immediately launched a massive search operation to retrieve the stolen explosives. Odisha Police have also constituted an SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe into the incident. Meanwhile, police sources said the gunfight was underway between security personnel and red rebels in the dense forest along the Odisha-Jharkhand inter-State boundary.

‘Grandpa, come home': Granddaughter of top Maoist commander Devji makes appeal
Raipur: In the turbulent wake of the encounter killing of topmost Maoist commander Basavaraju, an emotional letter and video message from the granddaughter of senior Maoist commander Tipiri Tirupati alias Devji has surfaced, where she pleads with him to lay down arms and return to the family. Devji and his granddaughter, Itlu Suma Tipiri, who is in a Telangana college, have never met as he went underground long before she was born. A central committee member, Devji is considered a potential successor to Basavaraju but Suma is calling him back to the life he left behind. Devji, known to be a ruthless Maoist commander, led the 2007 attack on Geedam police station in Dantewada, which was the first of many brutal ambushes to follow. He heads Maoist 'military commission', in effect the head of PLGA, the same post that Basavaraju held before being made CPI(Maoist) general secretary in 2018. A day ago, Bastar IG P Sundarraj had issued a blunt warning to Maoist commanders: surrender or die. "We consistently get information about the locations of top Maoist leaders. They can be eliminated anytime by security forces. They have only one option now: surrender and join the mainstream or get killed by security forces," Sundarraj said. Suma appears to realise the fate that may befall her grandpa. "Dear grandfather, please come home. I send you my heartfelt greetings. I've always longed to meet you, but sadly never got the chance. Whenever I read about you in the media, I feel both pride and pain. I know you gave everything to the cause of an egalitarian society, but recent events have been deeply saddening," she says, adding: "You've seen and achieved so much, but now we ask you to come back. Your family waits at the door. Please don't forget us." Suma questions the state's ongoing anti-Maoist operations, particularly 'Operation Kagaar' -- a high-intensity crackdown launched in Maoist-affected areas of Chhattisgarh. "Why aren't similar actions taken against infiltrators from Pakistan and Bangladesh? It pains me to see people celebrating the killing of Maoists with sweets. These are also human lives," she argues, without mentioning Indian forces' continued battle against Pak-backed terrorism and the recent Op Sindoor. She reflects on the motivations that drew many, including her grandfather, to the Maoist insurgency, and ends her message with the plea: "You left to stand for the people. But now, your people — your family — are calling you home. Please come back. We are still waiting, with open arms and open hearts." The letter comes two days after TOI reported that Devji and Sonu were believed to be the most probable to become CPI(Maoist) general secretary after Basavaraju's death.
