'Hasn't done anything': State of Origin hero under fire over 'disappointing' scenes

Yahoo5 days ago
League great Greg Alexander has ruled the Cowboys out of playing finals footy this season after Thursday night's disappointing defeat to the Dolphins. And he's singled out Queensland State of Origin winner Reuben Cotter for specific criticism, after the Maroons back-rower continued his underwhelming club form for North Queensland.
The Cowboys were blown off the park in the 43-24 flogging by the Dolphins, who ran in seven tries to four to jump into seventh on the NRL ladder. It was another dismal defensive display from North Queensland, who have the worst record in the competition after conceding a staggering 531 points in their 18 games so far this season. That equates to an alarming average of almost 30 points against per game and heaps more pressure on coach Todd Payten.
As it currently stands, North Queensland are five points adrift of the top eight with six games to go. But Alexander said on the evidence of Thursday night's heavy defeat and their woeful recent form, he gives them no chance of featuring in this year's finals series.
'Put a line through the Cowboys after last night, it's the end of them,' Alexander said on SEN radio on Friday. 'Even though their draw is favourable, and they still have a bye up their sleeves, I can't see the Cowboys rallying after that."
Reuben Cotter's form for the Cowboys under fire
And Alexander says the form of Cotter has been particularly concerning after his impressive performances for Queensland in this year's Origin series win. The Maroons back-rower has been nowhere near his best for the Cowboys in 2025 and is averaging just 88 run metres and less than nine hit-ups per game, from his 12 appearances in clubland this season.

'Some of their players, Reuben Cotter has only had two good games, and they were both for Queensland," Alexander said about the Maroons star. "He hasn't done anything for the Cowboys this year. He has been very disappointing as he was again last night.'
Cotter's form does not bode well for his hopes of selection in the Kangaroos squad for their Ashes series against England later this year. The Cowboys forward has been a mainstay in the Kangaroos squads in recent years and played in their victorious Pacific Championships campaign last year, and was part of Australia's squad for their World Cup triumph in 2023. But he's fallen well down the pecking order in terms of the NRL's best back-rowers this season.
Cowboys slip further out of NRL finals contention
And it's indicative of the struggles of the star-studded Cowboys, who had four players featuring on Thursday night against the Dolphins that played in last week's Origin decider. Winger Murray Taulagi - who suffered a late hamstring injury - has also been a regular for the Maroons in recent years. But they are now staring down the barrel of missing the finals for a third time under Payten, having made it to the second week of the playoffs last season.
Many critics insist the Cowboys should be pushing for the top-four but Payten has been unable to get the best out of his star-studded side in 2025. And it's left his position in serious threat, with the Cowboys slipping out of finals contention after six losses in their last seven games.
"Their defence is just terrible," veteran NRL reporter Andrew Webster said on SEN radio. "I know they can score points and we saw that with three tries in eight minutes (against the Dolphins) but I don't know if it's the coach, I don't know what's wrong with them but they just don't seem to be able to stop points."

Trevon Diggs took the real shots from the Dallas Cowboys' front office, not Micah Parsons

A lot of choice words from #Cowboys brass about CB Trevon Diggs in today's presser:Jerry Jones: 'We expect a player paid like Trevon to be here all the time. We expect him to be leading. That's not new…You've got to have some leadership about you.'Stephen Jones: 'When he… The brass for the Dallas Cowboys held their annual state of the union press conference to begin training camp on Monday, and there was no shortage of fireworks. No other team in the league opens camp like the Cowboys, with Jerry and Stephen Jones rumbling on about the season to come, and of course, talking contracts. New head coach Brian Schottenheimer didn't speak until eight minutes into the session as the Joneses held center stage. In 2025, most of the questions were about a pending deal for All-Pro pass pusher Micah Parsons, and many observers felt like the front office took a few shots at their best player during the question-and-answer session. However, it was cornerback Trevon Diggs who took the real heat from the Joneses. Diggs caught the ire of the front office by choosing to rehab in Florida, away from the team and its doctors, something that clearly didn't sit with the Cowboys' brass. Recently the organization decided to reduce Diggs' salary for not participating enough in the offseason program with the team, costing him $500,000, and unprompted, Jerry Jones pointed that fact out while being asked about a Parsons potential deal. Shortly after, Stephen Jones chimed in as well. The Cowboys had the de-escalator in the contract, but didn't need to use it, yet they haven't shied away from letting everyone know they were enforcing it against Diggs. It's one thing to have it reported last week the team would be reducing Diggs' salary but hammering the point home in one of the first comments out of the owner when being asked about a different player is on another level of frustration. There aren't many owners, or general managers, who would drive the bus over one of their best players, but the Cowboys aren't like anyone else. And the assault on Diggs didn't stop there. When Jones continued to be pressed about why the Cowboys haven't gotten a deal with Parsons done earlier, it led them to express some regret about getting an extension done with Diggs (and right tackle Terence Steele) early, and it not working out. Jerry: 'Frankly… should we have waited on (Trevon) Diggs and (Terence) Steele?'@JoeJHoyt asked Jerry Jones about the difference between getting deals done early and waiting. It's wild to think they made a mistake in signing a young, ascending player coming off an All-Pro season. This is what good organizations across the league do, yet the Cowboys seem to regret being proactive. While it hasn't worked out how the Cowboys had hoped after signing Diggs to a long-term deal, injuries have played a big role. The All-Pro CB suffered a torn ACL early in the 2023 season, which was followed up by another serious knee injury last year. Some of that is bad luck, but the team also didn't feel like Diggs attacked his rehab with enough vigor, which may have played a part in the second knee injury. That accusation was the first shot across the bow at Diggs, which may have prompted the CB to launch a YouTube series about his comeback efforts leading up to the 2025 season. Perhaps that response is something the Joneses don't appreciate. On the eve of the 2025 season, it looks like there's a fractured relationship between Diggs and the organization; that much was evident in yesterday's dog and pony show. So while many wanted to harp on the so-called "shot" at Parsons, Diggs was the actual player taking the fire. The upcoming season is a big one for Diggs and the organization, and it's not off to a great start. Diggs will begin training camp on the PUP list and the expectation is he won't be ready for the early part of the regular season. When he does see the field and how he performs will dictate if Diggs will be in Dallas past this year; those odds don't look good right now. ESPN's 'First Take' Got Duped In Embarrassing Fashion Tuesday

ESPN's 'First Take' Got Duped In Embarrassing Fashion Tuesday originally appeared on The Spun. The fact-checkers at ESPN's First Take might have a scolding coming their way after the way the show was apparently duped on Tuesday morning. While covering the Dallas Cowboys this morning, First Take host Molly Qerim shared a clip from practice of Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens receiving a deep bomb from quarterback Dak Prescott in training camp camp. There's only one problem. Actually, there are at least several problems. That clip is of Brandin Cooks, not George Pickens. The Cowboys have not had a practice yet. The clip is from two years ago. First Take were the victims of a troll job from Cowboys fan @FergSZN, who decided to troll some of his own fans by calling it a bomb from Dak to Pickens. "First play of Cowboys Training Camp is a Dak Prescott BOMB to George Pickens," they wrote on X yesterday morning. As much as people wanted to criticize the X user for tricking them, many more got on ESPN's case for not doing their research: "A joke of a network. Lazy producers didn't even check to see who took the video and when and Molly doesn't have any sense to realize it's wrong as she reads it," one user wrote on X. "Congrats to @espn for airing old video from a random Twitter account and calling it the first day of Training Camp. Beyond lazy," wrote another. "Reason 1001 to never watch that show and anything like it," a third wrote. "WOW. Who checks socials for ESPN? This is shameful lol." "But when I tell y'all these sports media people are frauds with mics and production studios then I'm the haters. Them airing this on National TV is crazy. Nobody knew this was an old clip and that it wasn't George Pickens? I watched the clip yesterday and could tell it wasn't him." "Jesus Christ!! This is why I don't watch ESPN anymore except for games. No research anymore. Just bs." "Throw this in the garbage and restart everything, the fact we have 'journalists' not knowing when training camp starts nor than George Pickens isn't 5'10 is insane, they're genuinely ruining others opportunities who can actually bring sports journalism back It's a bad look. NRL news: Cooper Cronk expected to depart Roosters in move 'unrelated' to Daly Cherry-Evans' arrival

The Roosters are still keen on Cherry-Evans despite questions about whether they'd backflip. Daly Cherry-Evans' expected arrival at the Roosters will reportedly coincide with Cooper Cronk's exit, although it's been stressed the two are not related. Speaking on '100% Footy' this week on Channel 9, leading journalist Michael Chammas reported the Roosters are still expected to sign Cherry-Evans for 2026. Questions had emerged about whether the Roosters would get cold feet on DCE considering the form of their young halves this year. But Chammas reported that Cherry-Evans will be wearing the tricolours next season. The 36-year-old was reportedly seeking a two-year extension from Manly, but Carayannis revealed it'll likely only be a one-year deal at the Roosters. Chammas said Cherry-Evans will then transition into a coaching role after 2026. Daly Cherry-Evans is still expected to join the Roosters in 2026, but Cooper Cronk is reportedly set to relinquish his role at the club. Image: Getty "My understanding is it's a one-year deal. He will announce that later in the year," Chammas said. "It'll have a one-year (deal) continuing on as a coach. "Danny (Weidler) last week spoke about how Daly Cherry-Evans will move into a coaching role once he retires." ADVERTISEMENT RELATED: Chammas also revealed that Roosters officials don't expect Cronk to continue in his role as a part-time halves consultant past this season. "This is unrelated, but it looks like Cooper Cronk's time at the club is coming to an end. My understanding is that he has been working as a halves consultant there for a number of years since retiring," Chammas said. "He wants to move in a different direction. He has different interests in life around the corporate world, and at the moment he is struggling to make commitment and time around the Roosters. The club is aware of his feeling and it looks like his time at the club will come to an end as Daly arrives." Cooper Cronk (R) has been working with the Roosters part-time since 2020. (Photo by) Questions around Cooper Cronk's future in Roosters role Cherry-Evans' coaching role will likely be as a halves specialist, meaning there won't be a need for both him and champion No.7 Cronk at the club. Cronk won four premierships with the Melbourne Storm (two of which were later stripped), before moving to the Roosters and winning two more. ADVERTISEMENT There were rumblings in 2023 that Cronk was set to depart his role as a halves coach amid the Roosters' desire to shake things up. But that proved to be untrue, with head-coach Trent Robinson rubbishing the reports. "Any other reports are just a long list of hearsay that's been going on," Robinson said at the time. "I don't even know where they're from ... All of my staff that are here this year will be here next year. That's pretty clear." Speaking back in March amid the initial reports that Cherry-Evans would be offered a coaching role at the Roosters for when he eventually retires, swimming great and NRL fanatic James Magnussen questioned what it would mean for Cronk. Speaking on SEN radio alongside former NRL player Justin Horo, Magnussen said: "Will he get a coaching job at the Roosters when they have Cooper Cronk doing the halves coaching? Or do they say to Cooper your time is done now, give him the punt, and bring DCE in? Or is he a TV guy now?" Probably the same deal that Chad was offered, wonder if they can co-coach — Rock Sniffer (@SniffRocks) July 22, 2025 Roosters really showing Sandon the door for a washed DCE 😂 interested to see what the lineup looks like? — Kez-G (@KezzaBear24) July 21, 2025 does DCE guranteed "job" fall under salary cap? — GRUN (@GRUN_TECH) July 22, 2025 Yahoo has contacted the Sydney Roosters for comment in regard to Cronk's role and future at the club.
