Commanders Fan Favorite In Jeopardy of Losing Job

Commanders Fan Favorite In Jeopardy of Losing Job

Yahoo06-05-2025

The Washington Commanders landed one of the better value picks of the entire 2025 NFL Draft when cornerback Trey Amos found himself available with the No. 61 overall pick. The former Ole Miss standout is a physical defensive back who excels in press coverage, while also showing the ability to blow up screens and run plays.
Washington has a handful of quality defensive backs heading into the season, and Amos adds another tool into the belt, which, while good for the team, may not be great news for some of the players.

Pro Football Network's Sterling Xie examined Noah Igbinoghene's situation in particular. Xie believes Igbinoghene could be on thin ice given the team's decision to draft Amos. Igbinoghene emerged as a fan-favorite last season while establishing himself as a valuable cover corner in the slot. However, if a team comes calling and the price is right, Xie feels you can't ignore the call.
"Veteran cornerback Noah Igbinoghene could get squeezed out of a job. The former Dolphins first-rounder found his footing last year, playing more defensive snaps (774) than he did his first four seasons combined (593). He spent 71% of those snaps in the slot, allowing just 5.6 yards per target in that role. Because of how he performed, it's no lock Igbinoghene is a goner. Still, it'll be tough for him to beat out a pair of recent second-round picks, which could leave him as a decent trade asset for Washington. Given his pedigree and promising 2024 performance, Igbinoghene would be a sneaky trade target for teams needing help in the slot." Wrote Xie.
After the draft, ESPN's John Keim analyzed each pick for the Commanders, and when determining whether or not Amos would start, he didn't have high hopes, but also didn't make mention of Igbinoghene as a competitor.
"Washington doesn't need (Amos) to start immediately.,' he wrote. 'The Commanders traded for Lattimore and signed veteran Jonathan Jones this offseason. Sainristil started 16 games as a rookie last season, eventually doing so on the outside after being drafted to play inside. Amos provides a different look outside than Sainristil and Jones, both of whom are considered best inside. That should enable him to play early …'
And it could be enough to squeeze out a veteran fan favorite.

Seattle Mariners Slip 2 Spots In MLB Power Rankings

Seattle Mariners Slip 2 Spots In MLB Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the Seattle Mariners are trying to stay relevant in the American League West Division race, they look to Cal Raleigh to help lead them to some postseason play. Advertisement Sure, it might be early to talk about AL postseason spots. But Seattle needs to have more than just Raleigh to help make it a reality. The Mariners slipped from No. 11 to No. 13 in the latest MLB Power Rankings released by The Athletic. What's the current situation revolving around Seattle? Grant Brisbee of The Athletic offers a big-picture look at the situation that the Mariners find themselves in right now. "The Mariners didn't do much to address their offensive woes in the offseason, getting Donovan Solano and Miles Mastrobuoni and little else," Brisbee wrote. "Their biggest offseason acquisition might have been Rowdy Tellez, both literally and figuratively, but he's since been designated for assignment. Cal Raleigh's great season is playing a big part in keeping Seattle Mariners in the hunt "If you pointed this out before the season, nobody was going to retort with, 'Oh, yeah? Well, maybe Big Dumper hits 60 homers this season, you ever think about that?'" Brisbee wrote. Seattle fans, of course, know that "Big Dumper" is Raleigh's nickname. Advertisement "It's a valid response now, though, as Raleigh's nonsensical power surge is carrying the Mariners and single-handedly keeping them relevant in the division," Brisbee wrote. "They'll need others besides Raleigh (and J.P. Crawford) to contribute, but the biggest reason the Mariners still have a shot at winning the AL West is a catcher doing things that catchers shouldn't do." Raleigh is currently hitting .278 with 32 home runs and 68 RBIs. The Mariners' offense revolves around him. As Brisbee pointed out, though, Seattle needs more from his teammates. Tellez was supposed to provide a big bat for the Mariners' offense. Obviously, that did not work out. Seattle stormed to the AL West lead early this season, only to see it gone after some losses piled up. Guess who's back leading the division again? None other than the Houston Astros. For the Mariners to keep pace, Seattle manager Dan Wilson needs to get a functional lineup out on the field every game. It's going to take some work for Seattle to get the job done this season. Mitch Garver Injured, Leaves During Seattle Mariners Loss

Mitch Garver Injured, Leaves During Seattle Mariners Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Thursday was not a banner day for the Seattle Mariners, who not only lost to the Minnesota Twins 10-1 after a four-plus-hour long rain delay. Seattle also had to take catcher Mitch Garver out of the game, putting Cal Raleigh back behind the plate. Advertisement Taking a look at Seattle's adventures probably will make Mariners fans scratch their heads. Let's start with Garver's situation. Garver took a foul ball off of his mask in the fifth inning. After Seattle manager Dan Wilson and the training staff checked on him, a decision was made to take Garver out. Twins right fielder Matt Wallner fouled the ball off and it hit Garver's mask around his jaw and cheek. Garver has dealt with concussion issues due to a foul ball back in 2018 when he was with Minnesota, The Associated Press reported. Raleigh, who was penciled in as the Mariners' designated hitter on Thursday, had to shift back to play behind the plate. Because that happened, Seattle lost its designated hitter spot in the game. Seattle starter Emerson Hancock pitched four scoreless innings against Minnesota Twins That wasn't the only loss Seattle suffered, either. Minnesota's Trevor Larnach slammed a two-run homer in the fifth off Mariners starter Emerson Hancock (3-4). Hancock kept the Minnesota hitters in check with four scoreless innings. But that all went away pretty quickly. Advertisement Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson (3-4) went five scoreless innings, keeping Mariners' hitters off-balance. Minnesota staked its claim to the victory with an eight-run sixth inning. Brooks Lee homered off Seattle reliever Zach Popo to lead off the inning. Byron Buxton and Willi Castro followed with RBI doubles, Carlos Correa added a two-run single, and Wallner added a two-run homer. For the Twins, it marked their biggest offensive outburst since scoring nine runs in the first inning against the New York Yankees back in 2023. The Thursday win came on the heels of Wednesday's 2-0 Minnesota win over Seattle on Wednesday. It's the first time that the Twins have won back-to-back games since winning three in a row back on June 3-5, according to The AP. Before this happened, Minnesota had lost 15 of 18 games.
