Miami's decision to draft Noah Igbinoghene over future All-Pro Jonathan Taylor still sparks backlash years later
Dolphins passed on Jonathan Taylor, and it still hurts (Image via: Getty Images) The Miami Dolphins had three first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft. While Tua Tagovailoa and Austin Jackson remain starters, the pick that continues to draw criticism is Noah Igbinoghene. Miami passed on running back Jonathan Taylor, who has since become one of the league's top rushers. That decision still sparks fan frustration and media backlash. Miami passed on Jonathan Taylor , and the regret hasn't faded With the No. 30 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. At the time, the move raised questions, especially since running back Jonathan Taylor was still available. In three seasons with Miami, Igbinoghene started just five games before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, Taylor was selected at No. 41 overall by the Indianapolis Colts. Since then, he's rushed for over 6,000 yards, ranking second in the NFL behind only Derrick Henry during that span. Taylor has already earned Pro Bowl honors and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2021. His impact has been consistent, and he's become one of the league's most reliable running backs. Igbinoghene, on the other hand, never made a lasting impact in Miami's secondary. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Specialist Down Jackets for Ultralight Adventures Trek Kit India Learn More Undo Bleacher Report's Matt Holder recently called Igbinoghene the worst Dolphins draft pick of the last five years, not just because of his limited production, but because of who the team passed up. Putting Taylor into head coach Mike McDaniel's offensive system could have changed everything. In 2023, the Dolphins had two running backs rush for over 800 yards. Adding Jonathan Taylor to that mix alongside Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle might have made Miami's offense one of the most dangerous in the league. Fans continue to look back at that 2020 draft with frustration. While Tagovailoa and Jackson have held up, the Igbinoghene pick is a clear miss. The Dolphins had a shot at one of the NFL's best backs and passed. Commanders Fan Favorite In Jeopardy of Losing Job
The Washington Commanders landed one of the better value picks of the entire 2025 NFL Draft when cornerback Trey Amos found himself available with the No. 61 overall pick. The former Ole Miss standout is a physical defensive back who excels in press coverage, while also showing the ability to blow up screens and run plays. Washington has a handful of quality defensive backs heading into the season, and Amos adds another tool into the belt, which, while good for the team, may not be great news for some of the players. Advertisement Pro Football Network's Sterling Xie examined Noah Igbinoghene's situation in particular. Xie believes Igbinoghene could be on thin ice given the team's decision to draft Amos. Igbinoghene emerged as a fan-favorite last season while establishing himself as a valuable cover corner in the slot. However, if a team comes calling and the price is right, Xie feels you can't ignore the call. "Veteran cornerback Noah Igbinoghene could get squeezed out of a job. The former Dolphins first-rounder found his footing last year, playing more defensive snaps (774) than he did his first four seasons combined (593). He spent 71% of those snaps in the slot, allowing just 5.6 yards per target in that role. Because of how he performed, it's no lock Igbinoghene is a goner. Still, it'll be tough for him to beat out a pair of recent second-round picks, which could leave him as a decent trade asset for Washington. Given his pedigree and promising 2024 performance, Igbinoghene would be a sneaky trade target for teams needing help in the slot." Wrote Xie. After the draft, ESPN's John Keim analyzed each pick for the Commanders, and when determining whether or not Amos would start, he didn't have high hopes, but also didn't make mention of Igbinoghene as a competitor. "Washington doesn't need (Amos) to start immediately.,' he wrote. 'The Commanders traded for Lattimore and signed veteran Jonathan Jones this offseason. Sainristil started 16 games as a rookie last season, eventually doing so on the outside after being drafted to play inside. Amos provides a different look outside than Sainristil and Jones, both of whom are considered best inside. That should enable him to play early …' And it could be enough to squeeze out a veteran fan favorite. Commanders WR Deebo Samuel picks his number and you can buy his jersey now
The Commanders will have a different player wearing No. 1 for the 2025 season. Noah Igbinoghene, a cornerback who came to Washington for the 2024 season to rejoin head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr, wore No. 1 last season. Igbinoghene had been with Quinn and Whitt in Dallas for a single season (2023) and signed as free agent to play in the Commanders secondary last season, and chose to wear jersey No. 1 after wide receiver Jahan Dotson was traded. Interestingly, Igbinoghene is returning for the 2025 season, having again signed to play with the Commanders. Consequently, he has apparently agreed not to wear No. 1 next season. Deebo Samuel was traded by the 49ers to the Commanders for a fifth-round draft choice. Samuel wore No. 1 in his final season (2024) with the 49ers after wearing No. 19 during the 2019 through 2023 seasons in San Francisco. Samuel actually wore No. 1 in college, playing for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Samuel was drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft at 36th overall. 1 of 1@19problemz | #RaiseHail — Washington Commanders (@Commanders) March 18, 2025 In an interesting apparent coincidence, Igbinoghene and Samuel wore No. 19 before choosing to switch to No. 1. Igbinoghene with Dallas wore No. 19, and Samuel with the 49ers. There is not much history of a successful Washington player wearing No. 1. Here are the most notable Washington players who wore No. 1. Matt Turk (1995-99) Punter: achieved the most success wearing No. 1 Jahan Dotson (2022-23) Receiver Reggie Roby (1993-94) Punter DeAndre Carter (2021) Receiver Noah Igbinoghene (2024) Cornerback Deebo Samuel jerseys are already for sale at this link.
