Alcaraz, Sinner face big tests to set up dream French Open final

PARIS - The French Open men's singles semi-finals take centre stage at Roland Garros on Friday.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz meets Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti in a rematch of their Monte Carlo final and Rome semi-final, both of which the Spaniard won to arrive in Paris with the perfect preparation.
World number one Jannik Sinner plays 24-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic looking for a fourth straight win over the Serbian to edge their head-to-head record after a ninth meeting.
ALCARAZ PEAKING AT RIGHT TIME
If there were lingering questions about Alcaraz's ability to match Sinner's efficiency after a couple of unconvincing matches at Roland Garros, they were emphatically dismissed by the second seed when he crushed American Tommy Paul last time out.
The four-times Grand Slam winner will head to Court Philippe Chatrier as the firm favourite on the back of five straight victories over Italian Musetti since losing a three-set thriller in the 2022 Hamburg final.
"Carlos has always had the level, the problem is it's hard to produce it in every match," the Spaniard's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero said.
"We know when he plays positively, bravely, when he plays without fear, he's a player with a potential that is still yet to be realised.
"But you also have to see the other side of it: pressure, tension, fear, difficulties, opponents, a tournament you want to win more than others, the importance we all put on it ... all these things also come into play."
Musetti, who won the Olympic bronze medal on the red dirt of Roland Garros, will be buoyed by making at least the semi-finals at the four biggest claycourt events this season.
"It's going to be a beautiful battle," Alcaraz said.
"We're both playing great tennis. Monte Carlo final, semi-finals in Rome, so it's going to be great for people to watch as well."
SINNER FACES DJOKOVIC SEEKING TO ASSERT DOMINANCE
Alcaraz could meet Sinner in a dream French Open final if the Italian top seed can navigate his semi-final against three-times Paris champion Djokovic, who is back playing at a level that won him an Olympic gold last year but went missing thereafter.
Sinner has dominated the duo's recent meetings, winning four out of the last five, though he was beaten in straight sets in their only match on clay in Monte Carlo four years ago.
Sinner, however, is now a ruthless machine who is rejuvenated since returning from his short doping ban and few would bet against the U.S. Open and Australian Open champion reaching another major final.
"I wouldn't have thought to be here in this position since my comeback," Sinner said, after dismantling Alexander Bublik to reach the last four.
"I'm happy to take things like they are and hopefully I'm ready. I want to watch my side of the net and then we'll see."
Djokovic will hope to land one more punch for the old guard as the last active member of the "Big Four" of men's tennis and he has hit top gear at the right time after winning his 100th tour-level title in Geneva ahead of Roland Garros.
He took another step towards a record 25th major by swatting aside Alexander Zverev and reminded fans about how he thrives on the grandest stage.
"This is where I lock in and give my best," Djokovic said.
"I just hope that I'll be able to physically keep up with Sinner. It's a big challenge for me.
"It's only going to get tougher, but it's good. It's how it's supposed to be, at the highest level."

Inter set to appoint former player Chivu as manager to replace Inzaghi
Inter Milan will appoint their former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi once details are worked out with his current club Parma, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless, and was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. "To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said. "All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma." While Inzaghi arrived at Inter after being in charge of Lazio for five full seasons, winning a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups with the Rome-based team, the club are now putting their faith in a coach with very little coaching experience at this level. Chivu spent seven seasons as a defender at Inter, ending his playing career at the club in 2014 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side of 2010. He returned to Inter in 2018, taking charge of underage teams and moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team where he won the league title in his first season in charge in 2022. Chivu left Inter at the end of the 2023-24 season, and in February this year he took on his first senior managerial role when he was named Parma manager to replace Fabio Pecchia with the club in the Serie A relegation zone. Parma had lost five of their last six games under Pecchia, while Chivu suffered just three defeats in his 13 matches in charge, securing the club's survival with a win at Atalanta on the final day of the season. Chivu has little time to settle in with the Club World Cup fast approaching where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexicos' Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate. Atalanta appoint former Southampton coach Juric as Gasperini's heir
Ivan Juric has been appointed Atalanta manager to replace Gian Piero Gasperini, the Serie A club said on Friday, with the Croatian signing a two-year deal just two months after he left Southampton following their Premier League relegation. Atalanta, given the difficult task of replacing Gasperini who left the Bergamo side on Saturday after nine years in which he oversaw the most successful period in the club's history, have chosen his former pupil and assistant Juric. Juric, 49, played under Gasperini at Crotone and Genoa, was part of the Italian's coaching staff during his short-lived spell at Inter Milan in 2011, and became his assistant at Palermo the following year. This is not the first time that Juric has replaced Gasperini. In 2016, after Gasperini left Genoa to coach Atalanta, Juric was the man chosen to take charge. He then spent five seasons managing Hellas Verona and Torino. Last season, Juric became AS Roma manager after the sacking of Daniele De Rossi in September, but lasted less than two months in the job before he too was shown the door, and in December he took charge of Premier League club Southampton. Southampton were bottom of the standings at the time and Juric was unable to spark a turnaround, winning two of his 16 games in charge in all competitions, and left in April when the club's relegation was confirmed with seven matches to spare. Juric will aim to restore his reputation after a turbulent season, but faces a tough challenge to replicate Gasperini's achievements, who took Atalanta from relegation battlers to regular European football, winning the Europa League in 2024. Atalanta finished third in Serie A last season, which will give Juric his first taste of Champions League football as a manager, and in the league he will come up against Gasperini who became manager of AS Roma on Friday.
