Purdue basketball's overseas reach continues with Italian big man's visit

Purdue men's basketball's longstanding reputation for developing big men regularly puts it in contention for the best 7-footers in the country. That appeal has now begun to cross oceans. Italian 7-foot-3 center Luigi Suigo is on campus for an official visit until mid-day Tuesday. Suigo is reportedly double-dipping on this trip, heading to Indiana for another Big Ten look this week. His first official visit back in February also occurred within the conference — at Illinois, another program loading up on European talent recently. Purdue already made one addition from overseas in 2025. Omer Mayer is scheduled to arrive later this summer from Israel, adding a second guard to the incoming freshman class. Suigo turned 18 in January. He's a Class of 2026 prospect, meaning he is a contender to succeed Trey Kaufman-Renn and transfer Oscar Cluff in the post. Purdue, of course, knows all about foreign big men — though not on such direct flights. Matt Haarms of The Netherlands made a stopover at Sunrise Christian in Kansas before coming to West Lafayette. Zach Edey left Toronto for IMG Academy in Florida prior to joining the Boilermakers. Remember Purdue's historic Final Four run with our collector's book What remains to be seen is whether pursuit of players such as Mayer and Suigo becomes a consistent part of Matt Painter's recruiting strategy. It may be too early to call this a trend, but NBA teams have begun taking foreign 7-footers more frequently at the top of the draft. France's Victor Wembanyama went No. 1 overall in 2023. His countryman, Alex Sarr, went No. 2 overall last year. Both of them came through pro leagues, rather than the American prep system. Suigo averages 9.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in seven games in Italy's lower pro division. Insider: Brandon Brantley hated playing in the post. Now, he's Purdue's big man whisperer Suigo's game resembles that of redshirt freshman Daniel Jacobsen more than Edey. Perhaps he'll share a frontcourt with Jacobsen going into 2026. Jacobsen made the first cut at the Team USA training camp for the FIBA Under-19 World Cup team. He is now among 18 contenders to make the trip to Switzerland for that tournament later this month. Jacobsen was one of 31 players invited to the camp. The final roster will be trimmed to 12 players. Insider: How seniors are setting the tone for Purdue basketball with championship expectations As of Monday afternoon, Cluff continued to await receipt of his renewed visa. Once it renews, he'll board a plane in Australia and head for West Lafayette. Mayer was also supposed to play with Team Israel at that FIBA U19 World Cup. However, there were reports Monday that Israel may be dropping out of the event. The recent escalation of hostilities with Iran has complicated travel and other issues. Israel's Premier League concluded its season with one game remaining in a best-of-three series between Hapoel Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel-Aviv — the same club for which Mayer and former Boilermaker Trevion Williams play in the EuroLeague. Safety concerns were cited as the reason. As of last week, Mayer was also working on visa issues before he could join Purdue.

Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder

Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder As Iowa baseball retools its roster this offseason following a relatively promising 33-22-1 campaign this spring that eventually fell short of making the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes got a commitment from former Wagner College outfielder Bryce Phelps in the transfer portal. The Denver, Iowa, native began his collegiate career at Southeastern Community College and spent each of the last two seasons with Wagner. As a junior for the Seahawks, Bryce appeared in 33 games, where he batted .195 over 177 at-bats, including 15 hits and eight RBIs. This past season, Phelps had a breakout campaign by starting 51 games and slashing a batting average of .399, an on-base percentage of .482, and a slugging percentage of .423, with 75 hits, 14 doubles, one home run, and 33 RBIs. Phelps' strikeout rate finished at just 11.7% in his 222 plate appearances and reached base via walk or hit by pitch in 14.0% of those appearances. With his impressive 2025 season at Wagner, Philips earned himself a spot on the First Team All-Northeast Conference list. '(It was) a combination of location, coaches, and teammates,' said Phelps in an interview with HawkeyeReport. 'Knowing that Iowa can be a place where I can go and compete with a bunch of guys that want to win, like my former Southeastern CC teammates Kooper Schulte and Caleb Wulf.' 'Just wanted to find the right fit at the highest level I could play at. The visit at Iowa was just as I remembered, felt like home. Having worked security at football games when I was at Southeastern Community College, I had a good feel for the outside of campus. Coach Heller and I had a great conversation. Talking about life, the program, and how I can fit in within the program as well. Talking to the coaches gave me the reassurance that I was wanted in the program. Having been recruited by them in high school and not working out I'm glad it circled back around.' As for where Philips could land in the Hawkeyes' lineup, he will have a chance to earn one of the corner outfield spots with centerfielder Miles Risley returning and Kellen Strohmeyer in line to earn the other corner position. Philips is just the third pickup for the Hawkeyes in the current transfer portal period, with Iowa likely to utilize the transfer pool as a valuable resource over the next few months while they patch up holes from their own departures. Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal

Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal Jacksonville center fielder Jaden Bastian has committed to the University of Florida baseball program, according to Baseball America's Jacob Rudner. Bastian is a five-tool talent that could start right away at Florida. He batted .302/.433/.552 and crushed fastballs as one of the ASUN's most dangerous hitters in 2025. Bastian hit 11 home runs and stole 36 bases, checking off the baserunning, power and speed boxes. He's held down center field at an elite level, too. He'll have to compete with Blake Cyr, Kyle Jones and Hayden Yost for a starting spot, but Bastian should contribute plenty. With Bastian and Jones now expected to make up two-thirds of the outfield, Florida has a chance to have one of the best groups in the country. It also gives the team some depth after injuries took out a chunk of the roster early on, including Jones. Florida Baseball 2025 Transfer Portal Movement Seven players have left Florida for the transfer portal this offseason. Left-handed sophomore Jacob Gomberg was the first to depart, followed by right-handers Alex Philpott (So.) and Carson Montsdeoca (Fr.). JUCO catcher Cole Bullen (Jr.) and right-handed freshmen Niko Janssens and Felix Ong made up the next wave of transfers. The most recent loss is freshman catcher Brock Clayton. Florida's early exit from the NCAA Tournament allowed Kevin O'Sullivan to make recruiting calls ahead of schedule, and the Gators have brought in four names. Notre Dame senior Ricky Reeth and UCF sophomore Russell Sandefer are the new right-handed arms, and JUCO catcher AJ Malzone rounds out the group headlined by Bastian.
