Thomas Muller gives blunt response to heat complaints during Club World Cup

Independent5 hours ago

Bayern Munich suffered a 1-0 defeat to Benfica in their final group stage match, losing their top spot in Group C.
The game was played in extreme 36°C heat in Charlotte, leading to complaints from various players and managers about the difficult conditions.
Thomas Muller dismissed these heat complaints, asserting that if he, at nearly 36, can play for 90 minutes, younger players have no excuse.
Muller is scheduled to depart Bayern Munich this summer after 17 seasons with the club.
He is considering a move to the MLS but has not yet finalized his decision, prioritising his focus on the ongoing tournament.

I wanted to stay at Rangers but Paul Le Guen sealed my exit

The Dane moved to Schalke on a free transfer after his Gers contract expired in 2006, after holding talks with other clubs like Osasuna, Roma and Newcastle. The left-footed attacker, who could play wide or centrally, was a big favourite during his time at Ibrox, was fairly prolific and came up with big goals too. He had just finished a campaign where he scored 18 goals, including four in the Champions League. But he has now revealed he gave Le Guen, manager at the time, and former CEO Martin Bain the chance to show how much he was wanted but they seemed happy to let him move on to pastures new. Read more: Speaking on Open Goal, Lovenkrands said: "When I was leaving, I got a phone call. David Murray brings me up to the office and basically says 'Le Guen is on the phone, wants to talk to you'. And I went 'right, okay'. "So I've got the phone, and he basically said to me 'if you stay, great, if you don't, I'll just get someone else.' "And I'll never forget that sentence. It was like, 'I've just scored four goals in the Champions League, 18 goals in the season and you don't want me to stay?' "There was no 'we want you to stay', or whatever, to try and convince you to stay. "It was literally like a hit in the stomach. It was like 'okay, I don't like this. It doesn't need to sound like he wants me to stay'. "I said (to Murray) 'he's basically told me this' and I said 'right I need to go and think about this.'" "If you stay - great. If you don't - I'll just get someone else" @lovenkrands11 on the conversation with incoming @RangersFC Manager Paul Le Guen that decided his exit from Ibrox. Full Podcast 📺⚽️ #Rangers — Open Goal (@opengoalsport) June 25, 2025 After then agreeing a deal with with the Germans, he flew over to undergo a medical. That was when he gave Bain one last chance, but was stonewalled again. "I agreed the deal but I had to go and do my medical," Lovenkrands added. "Went across to the hospital, done my medical. "On my way back from the medical to sign the deal, I phoned Martin Bain and said 'That's me just done my medical at Schalke, I'm away to sign the deal. Is there anything you want to say to me?' "He was like 'good luck'. "If he'd said 'we'll match it' or 'we'll offer you this' I would have went straight on the plane back. But he just said 'good luck' and that was it."

Former England manger Gareth Southgate knighted for services for football

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate has received a knighthood for his services to football. Southgate led England to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. He accepted the honour from the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. He is the fourth England boss to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, and the only manager to lead the England men's team to two major tournament finals. Southgate said that managing his country for eight years was 'an amazing privilege", but went on to admit he was 'not missing that either'. His resignation came following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July last year. England midfielder Georgia Stanway believes Sarina Wiegman should be made an honorary dame if the Lionesses retain their Euros title in Switzerland next month. Speaking exclusively to ITV News on the day Sir Gareth Southgate was knighted at Buckingham Palace, Stanway said the Dutch head coach had 'brought a lot of success to our country in football [terms], but also in creating national happiness". She continued: "I feel like that definitely should be rewarded". The Bayern Munich star added it was 'unfortunate' that more Euro 2022 winners hadn't been given honours after ending England's 58-year wait for a major trophy. 'I feel like everybody should have been rewarded for those moments', she said. 'Not only a few players. But maybe in the future to come, more and more will be recognised.' Four Lionesses were named in the New Years honours list in 2022/23, after claiming silverware for a senior England side for the first time since 1966. Captain Leah Williamson received an OBE, while teammates Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White were awarded MBEs. Sarina Wiegman was also made an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire, with the permission of the Dutch government. England's head coach was previously in contention for an honorary damehood, had she won the World Cup in 2023, according to The Telegraph, but England lost in the final against was succeeded as England manager by Thomas Tuchel ahead of next year's World Cup, when it will be 60 years since the men's national side won their only major honour. Under Southgate, England ended their 55-year wait for a men's final at Euro 2020 before being agonisingly beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley. A late defeat to Spain three years later again saw the side just miss out on silverware. Southgate took charge of 102 England matches in total to add to the 57 caps he won for the national team as a player between 1995 and 2004. He was recognised for his services to association football in the New Year Honours in December. Asked how it felt to be knighted, Southgate said he was 'more emotional than I thought I might be'. He also paid tribute to William, who is president of the FA, as an 'amazing supporter' of both England and his favourite club Aston Villa, whom Southgate played for during his 16-year career. Southgate added: 'He's a genuine football fan and he was deeply passionate about the team doing well and how he might help as president of the FA and was I getting the right support when I needed it. So it was an immense backing to have. 'He kindly thanked me for what I'd done.'
