Claire Dominics Buro supports global women's art platform at DIFC
Claire Dominics Buro, an award-winning international luxury design studio with roots in Italy and Spain and a headquarters in Dubai, proudly served as a strategic partner for the 8th edition of Art Connects Women, held at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) from April 8–11, 2025.
Curated by Zaahirah Muthy, founder of ZeeArts Gallery, this year's exhibition marked a milestone in the global art community, showcasing works from 112 female artists representing 112 countries—a record-breaking edition that celebrated diversity, heritage, and cross-cultural artistic dialogue.
Among the standout contributions was Claire Dominics Buro's presentation of 'In Search of Yourself', a thought-provoking sculptural piece by Tatiana Latynina de Ordovsky-Tanaevsky, the founder's mother-in-law. The sculpture invites viewers on a transcendent, gender-defying journey—interweaving personal memory with universal themes of creative autonomy, resilience, and reinvention.
Claire Ordovsky Tanaevsky, the studio's founder and art director, acted as a patron and honored speaker at the accompanying Accelerate Action event, held in partnership with UNESCO and DIFC. During a high-level panel discussion, she highlighted the power of lifelong learning, cultural immersion, and emotional depth as fundamental pillars of sustainable and ethical design. "To create with integrity, one must listen, travel, and understand the historical and emotional layers of whose place is meant to be built within," she shared.
As a design house known for its culturally embedded interiors and architectural storytelling, Claire Dominics Buro's portfolio spans continents — from the Mexican Riviera to the Japan Sea. The studio is celebrated globally for crafting hospitality and residential spaces that fuse refined luxury with emotional resonance.
'Design is not just about how something looks; it's about how it makes you feel,' said Claire. 'We aim to create spaces that foster connection, comfort, and identity — that's the soul of meaningful design.'
The event also witnessed a visit from the chairwoman of Dubai Culture, who met with artists and partners, acknowledging the cultural and societal significance of the initiative.
Claire Dominics Buro continues to champion art, sustainability, and storytelling in design, reinforcing its mission to shape spaces that speak to the heart of human experience.

Dubai: Indian restaurant Daftar is perfect for that mid-week work break
If you need to close your eyes to savour the feeling of that very first bite, you know it's good. At Daftar, the newly opened Indian restaurant at DIFC, we found most dishes elicited this response. Or a sigh of happiness. Or both. The thing about Indian food is that while it's packed with flavour, it's also often got reserves of heat. Daftar, we are happy to confirm, did not. The result was meal of succulent meats, street food, and unusual regional fusion fare, without the huffing caused by generous amounts of chili. The restaurant has a canteen vibe reminiscent of spots near offices, or daftars, in India. Done up in a cheerful palette of cream, brown, and green, it's a nice spot for a business lunch, a catch-up with a pal, or an after-work session of commiseration after a long day. On display are several knick-knacks that call for greater observation – there's an old 11-inch television, a typewriter, a phone, and other draws for the curious eye. We began with a tastebud-tingling avocado and mango pani puri set that fell neatly into the shelf of unusual but familiar flavour. (Generally, these light balls of dough are stuffed with crumbled potatoes, black chickpeas, and a spice blend unique to the place making it. It is then laced with a spicy-yet-sweet dose of mint drink.) The avocado was a good replacement for the potato, adding not only nutrition but also a creamy texture to the bite. The mango brought a peppering of seasonal flavour. For the starters, we were treated to the Pondicherry Gunpowder Prawns – a swoonworthy smoked prawn dish with earthy flavours – and tawa sarson fish garnished with a ring of radish. The sarson fish (or mustard fish) is a Bengali favourite; and we found ourselves wrapped in the nostalgia of eating tender morsels of fish with the sharp aftertaste of mustard. The Cajun chicken tikka was a melt-in-your-mouth treat. Among other bites of note were the Himalayan jhol momos – well seasoned chicken wrapped in delicate pockets of flour, steamed and added to a delicious gravy and topped with burnt garlic, and the burhani raita – a crunchy yet cool bite. For the mains, I insisted on trying a favourite – dal makhani. And while it may sound like a simple dish, it is, I have found, easy to mess up. They did it right though; I ended up eating the entire bowl. It was served with laccha paratha, a soft, flaky flatbread that's fried. The ending was sweet – with three different types of kulfi, served like scoops of ice cream. These desserts are made with season ingredients and the ones that melted in our mouths included date and apricot. If you truly want to know if the food in a restaurant is good, ask diners about a week after they've eaten there – we may not remember exact flavours but we will recall the overall experience. In the case of Daftar, whether I waited one week or two, the verdict was the same: delicious fare in a cute spot that must be revisited. Go midweek for some relief on hump day – on alternate Wednesday evenings, you'll be rewarded with a comedy night that will make you giggle. For that familiar yet unusual taste experiment, going to Daftar is a must. Al Fattan Currency House, Mezzanine Floor, Tower 1, DIFC, Dubai. 050 666 4158.

Review: Sirene by Gaia
It's been six years since Gaia made its smash hit debut on the DIFC dining scene. The star pairing of hospitality heavyweights Fundamental (then Bulldozer Group) – led by Evgeny Kuzin; and chef Izu Ani, formerly at the helm of foodie favourites like LPM and La Serre, put upscale Greek dining on the DIFC culinary map, paving the way for a slew of successful homegrown restaurants. Fast forward to 2025, and the two have unveiled Sirene by Gaia, a seaside iteration of the beloved Greek-Mediterranean restaurant, one of a dozen new additions to J1 Beach. And how does Sirene look to stand out in a sea of new beach clubs? Firstly, by being the world's largest – the sprawling space is part-restaurant, part-beach club, and the two are linked by whitewashed bars, a sparkling swimming pool, and a lounge arranged around a DJ booth where guests dine with their toes in the sand – it's all big, bold and beautiful. The neutral shades and endless white stone are laced with pops of colourful bougainvillaea in shades of cerise and orange – the whole aesthetic reminiscent of the oh-so-chic Cyclades. There's plenty of nods to the original Gaia in DIFC – a fresh fish display, lovely neutral uniforms worn by the team, and plenty of big tables covered in crisp white tablecloths that ensure the air of sophistication remains, even at the beachfront. There's a more chilled vibe at the pool and beach, where plump loungers all gaze down towards the water; so if you're here for the party, be sure to book the restaurant. Under the cover of the indoor space, there are more tables for two and four, while the ones down towards the DJ booth are designed for bigger groups, but the indoor-outdoor spaces seamlessly blend, and all command striking views of the sea. The menu isn't extensive, but there's lots we like the look of – starting with the bread, which arrives freshly baked and with a side of tangy tomato dip that's refreshing and light. We stick in familiar territory with the seabream carpaccio (Dhs225), and the fish is fresh and cut into slivers, served with a trio of dressings of fragrant truffle, zesty mandarin, and sour lemon, and each offers a complementary flavour. The Greek salad (Dhs135) is a generous glass bowl of neatly cut onion, cucumber and tomatoes, tossed in a traditional dressing and topped with a slab of barrel-aged feta that balances everything perfectly. From the mains, we opt for the king prawns and a sea bass (market price) cooked to order from the fresh fish display – the simple seasoning of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon lets the high-quality ingredients sing, and when paired with a bowl of crispy fries (Dhs50) and baked vegetables (Dhs50). We make a late afternoon reservation, and even mid-week as we're ordering dessert (go for the fried Greek donuts (Dhs75), drizzled in a sweet honey), the music is turning up and magnums of chilled rosé begin to pour at tables around us. Guests start to migrate to the bars, lingering for sunset drinks as day turns to night. Verdict: Go for the food, stay for the vibes. Sirene by Gaia, J1 Beach, daily 10am to 1am.
