Students collect 10 lakh signatures for ‘Save Public Education' campaign: AIDSO
The Mysore district committee of the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has lauded students, parents, teachers, and the people of Karnataka for collecting over 10 lakh signatures as part of the ongoing campaign to 'Save Public Education'.
In a statement, AIDSO district secretary Nithin said the campaign, launched under the slogan 'Save Public Education', aims to gather 50 lakh signatures to demand the strengthening of government schools and colleges.
'Reaching this milestone marks a significant stage in our movement. The unity, courage, and commitment shown by students in opposing the anti-people decision of the State government to reportedly close 6,200 government schools under the guise of consolidation through the Hub and Spoke model proves that even the impossible can be made possible,' he said.
Each signature collected is more than just ink on paper—it represents the heartfelt voice of every individual fighting to uphold every child's right to free and quality education. 'This achievement gives us greater strength to push the movement forward,' he said.
The AIDSO district committee has urged the students and supporters to intensify their efforts to achieve the target of 50 lakh signatures and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the future of children and public education, the statement said.

The investigation was slow. Police initially called it just an accident. They filed a murder case only after our protests." Nithin was allegedly killed when a group of college students, riding in a Range Rover, rammed their vehicle into his bike. The police have arrested three students, including one identified as the grandson of a DMK councillor. A fourth suspect is still missing. The victim's friend, Badri, who was with him that day, said the group had gathered to celebrate a friend's birthday when they received an SOS from juniors about a brewing fight. "There was an argument between Venkatesh and Pranav over a girl," Badri said. "First, they hit our bikes. Stones were thrown at the Range Rover. We all sped on our bikes. The vehicle then chased Nithin and Abhi and rammed their bike. Nithin died. Abhi was injured. The real target was Venkatesh, who was on another bike." Nithin's family alleges that two of the accused -- Chandru and Pranav -- come from politically influential families linked to the ruling DMK. "Chandru is known for rowdyism. He should not be roaming free. If they do this now, imagine in the years to come. No one should go through what I do now," said Muthozhi. While the police have now registered a murder case, the family and friends are demanding a thorough and unbiased probe. The DMK has pushed back against the political narrative. Senior party leader TKS Elangovan told NDTV, "These are social issues. AIADMK and BJP workers have also been involved in such incidents. But now they want to target the DMK government. This isn't about politics."

AIDSO seeks urgent repair of unsafe school buildings across country
The All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has expressed sorrow and outrage over the collapse of a government school building in Rajasthan, which resulted in the death of 7 children. 'This is not a natural disaster. Instead, it is a man-made tragedy created due to negligence and irresponsibility towards public education. It is a well-known fact that thousands of government school buildings across the country are in a dilapidated condition. Lack of maintenance, poor infrastructure, and severe underfunding have turned these institutions into death traps,' AIDSO said in a statement here. 'The attempt to shift the blame on to the victims — students, teachers, and school authorities — is outrageous. The root of this crisis lies in the severe lack of funding for infrastructure in government schools. This is further exacerbated by anti-public education policies like NEP 2020, which aim to privatise and corporatise education,' it alleged. AIDSO has demanded an immediate and impartial judicial inquiry into the Rajasthan school building collapse, and called for strict punishment to those found responsible. All unsafe government school buildings across the country must be urgently inspected and repaired, and funding for education, especially for improving infrastructure in government schools, must be substantially increased, it demanded. While demanding the withdrawal of NEP 2020, AIDSO sought the formulation of a democratic, scientific, and pro-people education policy. The governments must take responsibility for school safety and infrastructure, its statement added. We call upon all students, teachers, parents, and citizens across the country to unite and fight against this negligence in order to save and strengthen public education, a statement from Nithin, district secretary, AIDSO, Mysuru, said.

‘Rajasthan school tragedy is man-made'
Expressing deep anguish over the collapse of a government school building in Rajasthan recently claiming the lives of seven innocent children, the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) has held the Rajasthan government's negligence and apathy towards public education responsible for the tragedy. In a media note released on Sunday, AIDSO district secretary Tulajaram N.K. termed the incident a man-made disaster. 'This is not a natural disaster. It is a man-made tragedy caused by the failure of the Rajasthan government to maintain public infrastructure and ensure safe learning environments for children,' he said, offering condolences to the bereaved families and expressing solidarity with them during this difficult time on behalf of his organsiation. Mr. Tulajaram said that the incident highlighted the sorry state of infrastructure in government schools across the country, many of which are in a state of disrepair. 'Thousands of government school buildings are in disrepair. Poor maintenance, inadequate infrastructure and chronic underfunding have turned these institutions into death traps for lakhs of students,' it said. Condemning the Central government's response to the tragedy, he criticised the move to issue advisories instructing schools to prepare for 'emergencies and natural disasters' and to coordinate with disaster management authorities. 'Instead of preventing such disasters, the Central government is asking students and teachers to prepare for them. This is outrageous,' the statement said. The organisation also condemned the attempts to deflect blame onto students, teachers and school officials. 'The root cause of the crisis lies in the systemic underfunding of government schools and the anti-public education policies such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to privatise and corporatise education,' it claimed. The organisation has demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the Rajasthan school building collapse and strict punishment to those responsible, immediate inspection and repair of all unsafe government school buildings across the country, a significant increase in funding for infrastructure in public schools, withdrawal of NEP 2020 and formulation of a democratic, scientific and pro-people education policy and an immediate end to victim-blaming of students and teachers while placing accountability squarely on governments for ensuring school safety. AIDSO has called upon all students, teachers, parents and citizens concerned across the country to join hands in resisting such negligence and to intensify the fight to protect and strengthen public education.
