Nimisha Priya forum seeks action against evangelist Paul

The Hindu21 hours ago
The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a body that coordinates the efforts for the release of Nimisha Priya from a Yemen jail, has appealed to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take action against evangelist K.A. Paul for allegedly collecting money for the release of the Keralite nurse.
The council has accused Mr. Paul of soliciting donations through a bank account purportedly started by the External Affairs Ministry, claiming that ₹8.3 crore was needed to free Nimisha Priya. The External Affairs Ministry has clarified that it is not conducting any official fundraising for Nimisha Priya's release and warned against spreading false information in the government's name.
In a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief, Subhash Chandran K.R., legal adviser to the action council, expressed concern that more than 54,000 subscribers had already viewed Mr. Paul's alleged X post seeking funds for Nimisha Priya's release.
Meanwhile, All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar clarified that he had done everything possible to secure a reprieve from execution for Nimisha Priya. 'The ball is now in the Central government's court,' he said, adding that the government should take the initiative to secure her release from prison and that his organisation would provide all possible help.
Initially set to be executed on July 16, Nimisha Priya's sentence was postponed by Yemeni authorities on July 14, and subsequently commuted.
The action council has asked the Union government to utilise Mr. Aboobacker Musliyar's connections with Yemeni scholars to initiate talks with Talal Abdo Mahdi's family, whose murder Nimisha Priya has been convicted of.
Mr. Paul is one of the persons who claimed credit for securing reprieve for Nimisha Priya from execution. Mr. Paul has refuted allegations of fraud through a series of posts on X. He also challenged the government's claim that the bank account in question was not government designated. Mr. Paul also demanded that the funds required for Nimisha Priya's release be paid from the Prime Minister's account.

Kerala-origin girl shot in London: 33-year-old convicted in gang attack; child left with bullet in brain

LONDON: A 33-year-old man has been convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent for his role in the shooting of a nine-year-old Keralite girl who was hit in the head while eating ice-cream with her family at a London restaurant. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The girl was struck by the first of six bullets fired from a passing stolen motorbike outside the Evin Turkish restaurant in Dalston at 9.20pm on 29 May last year. She was caught in the crossfire of a gangland attack. Javon Riley (33) of Tottenham, London, was also found guilty by a jury at the Old Bailey of attempting to murder three men - Mustafa Kiziltan (35) Kenan Aydogdu (45) and Nasser Ali (44) - who were sitting outside the restaurant and were the intended targets. All four were taken to hospital for emergency surgery. The men had affiliations with Hackney Turks and the shooting was ordered by the Tottenham Turks, a rival gang, the court heard. Both gangs are responsible for importing most of the UK's heroin. The child, whose parents are from Gothuruth in Ernakulam district and now live in Birmingham, spent three months in hospital. She has been left permanently injured, with a titanium plate in her skull and a bullet still in her brain. She will continue to have physical and cognitive difficulties throughout her life. "This was not just an accident," her mother said after the verdict. "Even if our daughter was not the intended target, those responsible were still attempting to take lives, it is brutal and inhumane. We live with this pain every day, knowing nothing will ever be the same for our family." Riley denied the charges but was convicted on Monday following a three-week trial. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He did not pull the trigger but scoped out the area over several days, which included drinking pina coladas at the bar opposite. On the night of the attack, he travelled past the scene several times in a stolen car to ensure the targets were present and helped the gunman evade capture. The gunman and firearm have never been found. Detectives are offering up to £15,000 (Rs 17 lakh) for information that leads to the gunman. Riley, who is not a member of Tottenham Turks, refused to name the gunman or the person who ordered the shooting fearing for his safety. He will be sentenced on Sep 12.

Govindan issues legal notice to biz man over allegations of letter leak

1 2 3 T'puram: CPM state secretary M V Govindan has sent a legal notice to Muhammed Sharshad, a Chennai-based Keralite businessman, who accused his son Syamjith of leaking a letter Sharshad had written to the party's politburo against another businessman. The legal notice stated that Sharshad's wanton allegations were intended to damage Govindan's prestige. It said Govindan was deeply concerned, aggrieved and prejudiced by Sharshad's false and baseless statements, wherein he recklessly imputed corrupt practices and alleged misuse of political status, credibility and responsibility against Govindan. It mentioned that the letter, which Sharshad claimed to have been leaked using Govindan's influence, was circulating on social media and was released by Sharshad himself. The notice also reminded him of a letter he wrote to the CPM on May 17, 2024, in which Sharshad sought an apology for his allegations against Govindan. The notice demanded that Sharshad withdraw the allegations against Govindan within three days of receiving the notice publicly. It required him to publish a statement withdrawing the allegations through the same forums, desist from repeating such allegations and remove his allegations from social media. If Sharshad fails to do so, Govindan would be forced to initiate legal actions, it warned. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
