Andhra CM Naidu to launch ‘Matsyakara Sevalo' for fishers today
VIJAYAWADA: The stage is set for the launch of the Matsyakara Sevalo scheme by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday, aimed at financially supporting fishermen during the 61-day fishing ban from April 15 to June 14.
Under the scheme, Rs 20,000 will be provided to each of the 1,29,178 fishing families across 12 coastal districts, with the government allocating Rs 258 crore for this purpose.
The launch of the scheme will take place at Budagatlapalem village in Etcherla mandal of Srikakulam district.
Naidu will arrive at Budagatlapalem by noon, visit a local temple, and engage with fishermen to discuss challenges faced during the ban period.
He will address a public meeting before departing for Visakhapatnam by helicopter, and then to Vijayawada by special flight by 5 pm. District officials have finalised arrangements for distributing the aid under the Matsyakara Sevalo scheme, fulfilling an NDA manifesto promise to double the previous government's Rs 10,000 aid to Rs 20,000 to fishermen.
The coalition government, in its 10-month tenure, has prioritised fishermen's welfare, building on its 2014-19 legacy when it introduced financial aid during the fishing ban and spent Rs 788 crore on fishermen's welfare, including nets, boats, and iceboxes.
It also established six residential schools for fishermen's children in districts like Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. Since 2024, the government has provided monthly pensions to 68,396 fishermen, Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for families of fishermen who die during fishing, and Rs 9 fuel subsidy per litre for boats, with Rs 50 crore allocated for 23,062 boats.
Other plans include installing two-way communication systems on 4,484 boats, and constructing nine fishing harbours and seven fish landing centres with Rs 2,160 crore. An aqua park in Nizampatnam of Bapatla district is also in progress.
The government's broader welfare efforts include increasing pension to Rs 4,000 and providing free gas cylinders under Deepam 2.0. These initiatives underscore the State's commitment to inclusive growth.

In the Union Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, no income tax is payable on a total income up to Rs 12 lakh (equivalent to an average monthly income of Rs 1 lakh, excluding special rate income like capital gains) under the new tax regime. New criminal procedure code: The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, replaced the 1898 Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), introducing major reforms to improve the criminal justice system's processes. It modernised investigation and trial procedures, boosts law enforcement efficiency and transparency, and aims for quicker justice delivery. The new law formalised and expanded the Zero FIR concept, allowing complaints to be filed at any police station, regardless of jurisdiction, with the case then transferred to the relevant station. 'The banks and customers are adopting measures to provide a secure banking environment, in spite of all the precautions taken by various stakeholders as there are instances of unauthorised electronic transactions,' the institution said in a statement. Insolvency law: The Modi government enacted the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in 2016, providing a streamlined framework for resolving insolvency and bankruptcy proceedings in the country. Court's order of removal of slum must be followed: Delhi CM on demolition
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that the demolition drive conducted at Madrasi Camp was action taken in strict compliance with court directives. She stated that the court had ordered the removal of this slum four times in order to clean the Barapulla drain aimed at preventing future flood-related disasters in the capital. Chief Minister Gupta asserted that the residents of the Madrasi camp have been allotted houses and have been moved there. Speaking to reporters, Gupta stated, "I have clearly said, that if the court has ordered something, neither the government, nor the administration can do anything about it. The truth about the demolition of Madrasi Camp is that it was set up on the banks of the Barapullah drain. The court had ordered the removal of this slum four times so that machines could be deployed to clean the drain. Otherwise, 2023-like floods would be seen again in Delhi. No one can defy court orders. Residents of that camp have been allotted houses and shifted there." Delhi Chief Minister noted that similar actions have been taken to another places, including Railway Colony. Targeting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for politicising the matter, the Chief Minister asked who will be held responsible if there would be a loss of life. She said, "Action was taken in three places in Delhi, including Railway Colony, a slum set up near the railway tracks. The railways took action. Who would be held accountable if there is a loss of life? Should Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi, or Arvind Kejriwal be held accountable? The court knows what it is doing and hence has given orders." Further, noting that the BJP-led Delhi government is working for the welfare of the capital territory, the Chief Minister said, "Apart from this, development work is going on throughout Delhi at a cost of Rs 700 crores which was never done by Kejriwal or Congress government." Earlier on June 4, AAP leader and Delhi Assembly LoP Atishi launched a scathing attack on the BJP following the demolition drive at Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, South East Delhi on June 1 following a court order. In a post on X, Atishi posted, "BJP had promised 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan' (where there is a slum, there will be a house), but as soon as it won the election, it bulldozed the Madrasi camp." "Today, when I went there, women, elderly, youth - everyone cried bitterly. They were saying that they made a mistake by voting for the BJP. If Kejriwal were here, he would not have let our slums be demolished," posted Atishi. The operation was carried out to resolve the flooding issues caused by the narrowed drain, which obstructs water flow during heavy rains. 370 encroachments have been demolished, with 189 residents deemed eligible for resettlement and allocated flats in Narela, while 181 are ineligible for resettlement.

Year's budget can't compensate lives lost in stampede: Somanna
Mysuru, June 8 (UNI) In the wake of the Congress-led Karnataka government increasing the ex-gratia compensation amount for the families of the deceased in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, Union Minister V Somanna on Sunday said even an entire year's budget cannot atone for the precious lives lost during the tragic incident. 'Those children were the future of Karnataka and of India,' Somanna said, addressing reporters. Somanna's remarks came a day after the state government enhanced the compensation amount from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the family of each of those who died in the stampede last Wednesday ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations. The state government has been facing mounting criticism over the handling of the incident, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. 'This so-called virtuous government may allocate its entire budget, but it cannot bring back the lives lost,' Somanna said. Referring to a social media post, he added, 'I read that one of the deceased child's fathers had assets worth Rs 100 crore. But what's the use of such wealth when the child is no more? Who is responsible for this sin?' The Minister refrained from naming individuals but stressed the need for accountability. 'I don't wish to take names. But everything that had to be done was not done. Everything that needed to be said must now be said,' he remarked. The tragedy occurred when tens of thousands of fans flooded into the stadium area after a last-minute announcement by RCB about victory celebrations. Despite the venue's 35,000 capacity, nearly 2–3 lakh people gathered, overwhelming entry gates and the police. Reports have claimed that police had warned the government about the risk of a massive turnout, but security arrangements remained grossly inadequate. The state government has already cracked the whup, suspending five senior police officers, including the city police commissioner B Dayananda. The ADGP of Intelligence Hemant Nimbalkar has been transferred.
