Year's budget can't compensate lives lost in stampede: Somanna

Mysuru, June 8 (UNI) In the wake of the Congress-led Karnataka government increasing the ex-gratia compensation amount for the families of the deceased in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, Union Minister V Somanna on Sunday said even an entire year's budget cannot atone for the precious lives lost during the tragic incident.
'Those children were the future of Karnataka and of India,' Somanna said, addressing reporters.
Somanna's remarks came a day after the state government enhanced the compensation amount from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the family of each of those who died in the stampede last Wednesday ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations.
The state government has been facing mounting criticism over the handling of the incident, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured.
'This so-called virtuous government may allocate its entire budget, but it cannot bring back the lives lost,' Somanna said.
Referring to a social media post, he added, 'I read that one of the deceased child's fathers had assets worth Rs 100 crore. But what's the use of such wealth when the child is no more? Who is responsible for this sin?'
The Minister refrained from naming individuals but stressed the need for accountability. 'I don't wish to take names. But everything that had to be done was not done. Everything that needed to be said must now be said,' he remarked.
The tragedy occurred when tens of thousands of fans flooded into the stadium area after a last-minute announcement by RCB about victory celebrations. Despite the venue's 35,000 capacity, nearly 2–3 lakh people gathered, overwhelming entry gates and the police.
Reports have claimed that police had warned the government about the risk of a massive turnout, but security arrangements remained grossly inadequate.
The state government has already cracked the whup, suspending five senior police officers, including the city police commissioner B Dayananda. The ADGP of Intelligence Hemant Nimbalkar has been transferred.
The Karnataka government has also set up a one-member judicial commission led by Justice John Michael D'Cunha, alongside CID and magisterial inquiries. UNI BDN SSP

Job scam busted: 4 arrested, Rs 6 lakh recovered

Vizianagaram: The Vizianagaram One Town police busted a major job racket that duped several unemployed youth by promising jobs in the State Secretariat. Police arrested four members of the gang and recovered Rs 6 lakh from them. A total of nine individuals have been identified as accused in the case. Disclosing the details at a press conference held at One Town police station on Saturday, Vizianagaram DSP M Srinivas Rao revealed that the gang had collected Rs 53 lakh from seven victims across various districts, including Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Jangareddygudem, and Vizianagaram. Each victim paid between Rs 5 to Rs 8 lakh, hoping to secure a government job in AP Secretariat. The gang operated by creating fake appointment letters and ID cards, and even took the victims to Velagapudi Secretariat in Amaravati. Sujeeth, a key accused from Pradeep Nagar in Vizianagaram, played a major role by keeping the victims at a hotel near the Secretariat for a week, providing meals, and convincing them that their appointments were genuine. The victims believed they had secured jobs until they discovered the addresses mentioned in the appointment letters were fake. Realizing they had been duped, they approached the police. The investigation began following a complaint filed by Vinod, a resident of Dharmavaram in S Kota mandal. Acting on the complaint, CI Srinivas and SI Prasanna Kumar of One Town Police traced and apprehended the culprits. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mahesh (Vizianagaram), Rubin (Jangareddygudem), John (Eluru), and Yakub. The prime accused, Sujeeth, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital with illness. DSP said that they are searching for the other accused and will be caught soon.

‘They look for excuses': Chirag Paswan slams Rahul Gandhi amid EC row, says LoP has 'accepted defeat' in Bihar polls

File photo: Union minister Chirag Paswan and LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday claimed that Congress MP and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi , has already conceded defeat in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections , citing Gandhi's recent remarks targeting the Election Commission of India (ECI). Speaking to reporters, Paswan accused Gandhi of deflecting blame and targeting constitutional bodies instead of holding his own party accountable. "The problem with Congress and its leaders is that when introspection is needed, they look for excuses for losing elections," Paswan said, as quoted by the news agency ANI. "If Rahul Gandhi needs to find faults in any institution, it should not be a constitutional institution, but his own Congress party. Blaming the Election Commission, accusing someone of fixing elections, saying that the EVM is faulty, all this shows that Rahul Gandhi has already accepted defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. " Bihar will go to the polls later this year. Paswan further predicted that after Bihar, the opposition will suffer defeats in Assam and West Bengal as well. Meanwhile, RJD leader and Bihar's leader of opposition, Tejashwi Yadav , came out in strong support of Gandhi. Speaking in Patna, Yadav accused the BJP of compromising constitutional institutions, claiming, "Ever since Narendra Modi has become the Prime Minister, all constitutional institutions have been hijacked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users Don't Forget To Do This Before Sunday Read More Undo Before the ECI announces the elections, the BJP IT Cell knows the schedule." Tejashwi said the opposition's efforts were not just about power. "Everyone is working together, not to form the government, but to strengthen Bihar," he added, backing Gandhi's criticism of the ECI. Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had on Saturday posted on X criticising the ECI's response to his allegations of rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. He wrote, 'Dear EC, You are a Constitutional body. Releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions.' He urged the Commission to publish machine-readable electoral rolls and release all CCTV footage from polling booths post-5 pm to ensure transparency. 'Evasion won't protect your credibility. Telling the truth will,' he wrote. The ECI later dismissed Gandhi's remarks, calling his allegations "unsubstantiated" and an 'affront to the rule of law.' The Commission said that all relevant facts had been shared with the Congress party in December 2024 and are publicly available. The poll panel warned that spreading misinformation disrespects the law and demotivates lakhs of honest poll workers. 'After any unfavourable verdict by the voters, trying to defame the Election Commission... is completely absurd,' the Commission said in a detailed statement. In his op-ed titled Match-fixing Maharashtra, Gandhi had alleged that the state elections were a 'blueprint for rigging democracy', involving fake voters, inflated turnout, targeted bogus voting, and concealed evidence.

Ajit Jogi statue uprooted in Gaurela: Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) alleges government shielding culprits, warns of protest

RAIPUR: Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) State President Amit Jogi on Sunday strongly condemned the uprooting of former chief minister Ajit Jogi's statue in Gaurela and accused the state government of shielding the culprits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He warned of a major agitation if the statue is not reinstalled at Jyotipur Chowk, Gaurela, by 25 June. Addressing a press conference at his Raipur residence on Sunday, the former MLA, Amit Jogi, alleged that the statue of Ajit Jogi, which stood on private land owned by the Jogi family, was uprooted using a hydra machine in the intervening night of 25 and 26 May, and dumped in garbage. He claimed the act was carried out in collusion with local officials and said the culprits were later seen having tea with the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district in-charge minister at a guest house, instead of being arrested. 'It has been over two weeks, yet the statue hasn't been reinstated, nor have the accused been apprehended. Everyone sees them, except the police,' Jogi said, calling the incident a 'deliberate insult' to Ajit Jogi and his legacy. He clarified that the statue was legally installed on land privately owned by the Jogi family and not on government property. The land, he said, was part of a property acquired before 1932 by the late Menzies and later transferred through a valid Power of Attorney to Atul Arthur in 2020. In 2021, a No Objection Certificate was issued by the landowners for the installation of a garden and Ajit Jogi's statue. Funds for the statue's platform and garden, amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh, were sanctioned from former MLA Dr Renu Jogi's MLA fund, with Gaurela Municipality appointed as the construction agency. Amit Jogi rejected claims that the statue was removed to install one of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying the municipal resolution pertained to Tikar Bypass, not Jyotipur Chowk. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'We support installing both statues, but they must be placed at their rightful locations,' he said. He further accused BJP leaders of engaging in 'statue politics' and urged them to act ethically. 'Ajit Jogi belongs to every Chhattisgarhi. Uprooting his statue is not only illegal and insensitive, but it also reflects a narrow, destructive mindset,' he said. Jogi announced that if the statue is not reinstated at its original spot by 25 June, it would be brought to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's residence in Raipur, demanding its formal unveiling. 'The CM once promised to visit Gaurela for the unveiling. Since he didn't, we'll bring Jogi Ji to his doorstep,' he added. He concluded by forgiving those involved in the act and said copies of a book authored by Ajit Jogi would be sent to them, urging them to 'read Jogi Ji and understand him.' Dr Renu Jogi also condemned the act and appealed for swift justice and reinstallation of the statue.
