Students to get textbooks for physical education

Time of India03-08-2025
Chennai: From warm-ups to winning medals, Physical Education (PE) in Tamil Nadu schools is getting a major upgrade. For the first time, students of Classes 6 to 10 in govt and aided schools will now have exclusive guide books for PE - making the subject as structured and serious as maths or science.
Released by the school education department, the new physical education guidebooks feature colourful and clear, step-by-step illustrations to help students easily understand exercises, games, and safety techniques. From yoga postures and warm-ups to Tamil heritage games and first aid, each activity is visually explained to support correct form and better engagement. Additionally, it encourages collaboration with special educators to teach children with special needs.
According to officials from department, the larger goal is to help students from all walks of life excel in state, national, and international sports competitions, win medals and enhance mental well being. This structured guidebook brings clarity and consistency to how the subject is taught. "For students, it helps develop fitness, coordination, and lifelong healthy habits through age-appropriate, engaging activities.
For teachers, it clearly lays down ready-to-use lesson plans, assessment tools, and activity ideas that make planning easier and ensure consistent quality across classes," T Chandramohan, school education secretary, said.

He further said the sessions outlined in the book also teach important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership. "Ultimately, they make PE a more meaningful and structured part of every student's school experience," he added.
The demand for dedicated textbooks has been longstanding. "As of today, written PE exams are held for students of Classes 6-9 where questions such as the size of a football ground are asked. We have been demanding the department for a dedicated syllabus for PE and textbooks. I am glad this has been fulfilled," said Mohan, PE teacher, Govt Higher Secondary School, Kovalam.
However, a few associations representing PE teachers argue that the govt must focus on improving the sports infrastructure in the state and filling vacancies before introducing dedicated textbooks.
"Ideally, a school is supposed to have two PE teachers — one for students of Classes I-VIII and another for IX-XII. However, in most schools, not even one teacher is posted. Moreover, infrastructure for certain sports, such as pole vaulting, is poor. The govt should focus on building infrastructure to attract students to various types of sports as opposed to conventional ones," said S Pushparajan, deputy coordinator, Tamil Nadu physical education teachers association.
"There are at least 3,000 vacant PE teacher posts across the state. Not just that, if the higher secondary student strength is over 400, a post of a physical director has to be created. However, the govt has not done this in a majority of schools citing fund shortage. When you don't have PE teachers in schools, what good would a textbook do?" asked S Arockiaraj, TN PE Teachers Physical Education Instructors Association's Chennai secretary.

Who Is Senuran Muthusamy? Meet South Africa's Indian Origin Star Who Once Dismissed Virat Kohli On His Debut

Senuran Muthusamy was at his brilliant best for South Africa in the T20I series-opener against Australia in Darwin on Sunday. Playing just his fourth T20I, the 31-year-old returned figures of 1/24 to cap off a brilliant bowling performance. The all-rounder dismissed the dangerous Josh Inglis for a duck after South Africa opted to bowl in the capital of Australia's Northern Territory. His spell helped South Africa restrict Australia to 178 in 20 overs, despite Tim David 's 52-ball 83. Chasing 179, South Africa were restricted to 161/9, as Australia won the match by 17 runs. Who is Senuran Muthusamy? Senuran Muthusamy was born on 22 February 1994 in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa to parents of Indian origin. However, he maintains a strong connection to his Tamil heritage, with some of his family members still residing in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. He completed his schooling at Clifton College, before he went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in social science from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, specialising in media and marketing. Muthusamy was introduced to cricket at a very young age while growing up in Durban, where he began to impress in local tournaments and school matches. He played for the Kwa-Zulu Natal province from Under-11 to Under-19 level, but remained hesitant to believe he could turn professional. However, his commitment to improving his game led him to represent South Africa at the Under-19 level. In 2015-16, he was signed by the Dolphins as a top-order batter ahead of the season. Despite smashing a career-best 181 against the Knights in January 2017, he time as a top-order batter was shortlived. "His batting just dropped off a bit but his bowling went to another level," Imraan Khan, Muthusamy's former team-mate, told ESPNcricinfo in 2019. Muthusamy impressive show with the ball earned him a debut Test call up for the away series in India, where he went on to make his first appearance during a game in Visakhapatnam. In the match, he took his first Test match wicket, dismissing none other than the then India skipper Virat Kohli, caught and bowled. However, Muthusamy has struggled to solidify his place in the team, owing to fierce competition in the South African cricket landscape, with the likes of Keshav Maharaj showing no signs of slowing down. Muthusamy was part of South Africa's WTC 2025 winning squad, but didn't feature in the match.

'A Superstar Like...': Sanju Samson's Alternate Career Choice Leaves Ashwin In Splits

Last Updated: Sanju Samson, excelling in India's T20I and IPL, shared on Ashwin's podcast that he might have pursued acting like Rajinikanth if not a cricketer. He may leave Rajasthan Royals. Sanju Samson has cemented his place in India's T20I set-up after toiling for close to a decade. He has been thriving as a stylish opener since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach and has also proved his mettle as an able captain in the IPL circuit. But how would he have ended up if he wasn't a cricketer? The Kerala cricketer recently appeared in Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube Podcast – Kutti Stories with Ash – and revealed the he would have chosen if he hadn't become an international cricketer. Samson, who admires Rajinikanth, said he would have ended up being an actor like Tamil superstar. 'If you were not a cricketer, what profession do you think you would have genuinely thrived in?" asked Ashwin. Samson said, 'Superstar like Rajini sir." His answer left Ashwin surprised as the veteran off-spinner chuckled after knowing about Samson's interest in cinema. Samson went to share an anecdote, explaining his fandom for Rajinikanth. 'I was in Dublin, Ireland, for a match, and there was a Rajini sir film releasing the next day, and there was a match the day after. I went alone, booked a ticket, saw the movie and returned. I have gone to that extent, so yeah, I'm thrilled to watch his next movie," Samson said. 'Even there, you find Malyalis, Tamils, and Andhra people, right? The theatre was full," he added. Sanju to part ways with Rajasthan Royals? Reports suggest Sanju Samson is unhappy with the Rajasthan Royals management and has formally requested to leave the franchise. Having played 149 matches and scored over 4,000 runs, Samson is the Royals' most capped player and leading run-scorer, making his potential exit a major blow for the inaugural IPL champions. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
