With 99% compliance, here's what the UAE is doing to protect workers in peak summer heat

Time of India15 hours ago

UAE enforces Midday Work Ban from June 15 to September 15, banning outdoor work from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, with 99% compliance and fines up to AED 50,000.
Starting Sunday, June 15, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) will enforce the Midday Work Ban, a regulation prohibiting outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM.
This ban, which continues through September 15, aims to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries during the hottest months of the year.
The Ministry's website highlights that this marks the 21st consecutive year of the ban's implementation, underscoring the UAE's commitment to global occupational health and safety standards. The initiative is a crucial part of creating safer work environments across the country during summer's peak heat.
Strong Compliance Reflects UAE's Humanitarian Values
According to Mohsen Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Inspection and Compliance Sector at MoHRE:
'The Midday Work Ban has achieved an outstanding compliance rate of over 99% for consecutive years, which highlights the deep-rooted social and humanitarian values within the UAE's business community and private sector. It also reflects an advanced level of awareness regarding the importance of safeguarding human capital, which is a company's most valuable asset.

Moreover, it underscores the humane and progressive nature of UAE labour laws, particularly in relation to occupational safety and health.
'
Similarly, Dalal Al Shehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Labor Protection Sector, pointed out that:
'The Midday Work Ban has become a leading example of partnership between the Ministry, the private sector, and members of the community. This is reflected in the way partners have developed initiatives for workers during the ban period, thereby promoting the concept of social responsibility and highlighting the success of awareness strategies and the entrenchment of humanitarian values in the UAE's work environment.
'
The UAE, home to more than 200 nationalities, continues to align this regulation with the broader 'We the UAE 2031' vision, fostering a thriving and inclusive society.
Active Inspections and Supportive Measures for
Worker Safety
MoHRE conducts regular field inspections at worksites and workers' accommodations to raise awareness and enforce compliance with the ban. These visits help prevent heat exhaustion and sunstroke by reinforcing the importance of adhering to safety standards.
Many private companies support this initiative by providing fully equipped rest areas during the banned hours. These spaces include shaded areas, fans, sufficient drinking water, hydrating salts approved by local authorities, and first aid kits. Such measures ensure workers can rest and recover safely before resuming their duties.
Exceptions, Monitoring, and Penalties
The ban allows exceptions for critical work that cannot be paused, such as asphalt laying, concrete pouring, and emergency repairs affecting utilities or traffic.
However, these activities require authorization from relevant government authorities and must be completed promptly.
To ensure strict compliance, MoHRE encourages public reporting of violations through its call centre (600590000), official website, and mobile app. Companies violating the ban face fines of AED 5,000 per offending worker, with a maximum fine of AED 50,000 for multiple violations.
MoHRE continues to strengthen awareness campaigns and inspections in collaboration with both public and private sectors to maintain a safe and healthy work environment during the summer months.

Eight yrs after inception, 7,310 plaints in MahaRERA backlog

Eight years after its formation in 2017,the state's real estate regulator, MahaRera, is still grappling with a significant backlog of unresolved complaints. Of 29,374 complaints filed so far, 7,310 remain pending, prompting calls from homebuyers, legal experts, and activists for faster redressal and stricter enforcement of orders. Although MahaRera has resolved 21,888 cases and holds online and offline hearings, the increasing number of unresolved cases has alarmed consumer groups. They stressed the need for appointment of more adjudicating officers and setting up of regional benches to manage the growing caseload. MahaRera has registered over 50,000 real estate projects — the highest among state regulators — with nearly 50% of them located in Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune. However, stakeholders argued that this operational scale has not been matched by adequate capacity to address consumer grievances. Currently, MahaRera has one chairperson, two members, and three adjudicating officers. Activist Godfrey Pimenta of the Watchdog Foundation pointed out that this limited setup cannot cope with the volume of complaints. "Some complaints take two to three years, and in exceptional cases, up to five years to be resolved — despite the law requiring them to be addressed within six months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo To effectively clear the growing backlog, there is an urgent need to increase the number of MahaRera members," he said. Shirish Deshpande, chairman of Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, added that section 20 of Real Estate Regulatory Authority Act gives the state full freedom to appoint more MahaRera chairpersons and establish additional benches. "It's been eight years since MahaRera was established, and yet we are witnessing an alarming backlog of cases, which is deeply disappointing for those who once supported its creation," he said. He explained that complaints typically fall into two categories: "First, is when homebuyers are seeking exit from the project and demanding refund with interest due to delay in getting possession. Second, is when homebuyers want to continue with the project despite delays but want interest on the amount they have paid as per section 18 of the Act. In both these cases, it should not take long for the authority to pass orders, since the interest rate is already prescribed in the Rera rules. Such matters can be disposed of expeditiously..." PM Modi to begin 3-nation tour from Cyprus today

File photo: PM Modi (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi will travel to Cyprus on Sunday for the first leg of his three-nation tour that will see him participating in the G7 Summit in Canada and also visiting Croatia on his way back. Modi is also expected to have several bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit in Kananaskis. While the PM will have a meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, his other bilateral engagements are still being worked out, official sources said. Modi will also come face to face with US President Donald Trump for the first time since their meeting in Feb. The ministry of external affairs said in a statement that the visit to Cyprus - the first by an Indian PM since AB Vajpayee visited the country in 2002 - will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union. The visit to Cyprus is significant also as it comes in the middle of India's tensions with Turkiye over the latter's support to Pakistan. Ankara's recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region that was seized by Turkish forces in 1974 and differences over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean remain a constant source of tensions between Turkiye and Cyprus. Modi is expected to reach Canada on June 16, a day after the opening of the G7 Summit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! "At the summit, the PM will exchange views with leaders of G7 countries, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues," said the government in its announcement. For the final leg of his tour, Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be the first ever visit by an Indian PM to Croatia, marking an important milestone in the bilateral relationship. "The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthening its engagement with partners in the European Union," said the government.
