Chandigarh: Absconding GBP officials declared proclaimed offenders
The special court of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Chandigarh, has declared absconding officials of real estate firm Gupta Builders and Promoters (GBP) as proclaimed offenders. The company and its management are accused of duping investors of more than Rs 1,000 crore across the Tricity and several other cities in India before fleeing abroad around four years ago. According to court records, the accused had repeatedly failed to appear despite multiple arrest warrants being issued against them. Given their continued absence, the court declared them proclaimed offenders. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been investigating the matter under the PMLA and has already attached properties worth around Rs 148 crore belonging to the group and its directors. The seized assets include commercial projects at Zirakpur, residential properties, and agricultural land. Those declared PO by the court include GBP group officials Satish Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Raman Gupta, Vinod Gupta and Anupam Gupta. Despite repeated summons, the accused never appeared before the court, leading to the issuance of non-bailable warrants. The GBP Group also faces numerous cases before the Consumer Commission, several complaints with the Chandigarh Police, and multiple cheque bounce cases — in which they too have failed to appear, prompting more warrants. As per reports, the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) had also filed a complaint against GBP Group in the district court in November 2021 for failing to comply with its orders. When the accused failed to appear, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court declared them fugitives in October 2022. The accused are also on the run in a case filed by the Income Tax Department.

Kishanganj boy's 150km trek with severed arm exposes bonded labour
Patna: A 15-year-old boy from Bihar's Kishanganj, a survivor of bonded labour, is battling for recovery at PGI trauma centre in Rohtak after suffering an ordeal that shocked even the rescuers. On Saturday, his brother said, "He had a surgery and is in recovery now. It is financially getting very difficult for us." The teenager was found on July 29 trudging along the streets of Haryana's Nuh district, clad only in underwear, exhausted, and with his left arm severed and crudely bandaged. He had walked over 150km for more than 22 hours, trying to return to Bihar, when two govt school teachers, Arvind Kumar and Rakesh Kumar, spotted him. Arvind said, "He looked like a madman. I stopped our car and asked him where he was going, to which the boy replied 'Bihar ja raha hoon'. We both were shocked as Bihar was several kilometres away and asked the boy to come with us." The teachers gave him food and water before taking him to the nearest police station. According to police, the boy had been allegedly held captive at a dairy farm in Haryana's Jind district. He told rescuers he had been lured by a stranger at Bahadurgarh railway station with the promise of a job paying Rs 10,000 a month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The World's Most Beautiful Cities Where Life is Simply Better Undo Once at the dairy, he was denied wages, given little to eat and confined to a room. His duties included cutting fodder with a motorised chopper. One day, he accidentally sliced through his left arm. Rather than taking him to hospital, the dairy owner allegedly sought local treatment and had the wound bandaged. The boy claimed he was given medicine that rendered him unconscious for three days. When he awoke, some cash he had been given was missing, and he was driven to an unfamiliar location from where he began walking towards Bihar. It was ASI Kamal Singh of Sadar Nuh police station who first spoke to him, although communication was hampered by dialect differences. Singh took him to a local hospital, where doctors estimated the wound to be about 14 days old. "The boy could not remember his address, where he was kept, or even the phone numbers of his parents due to his pain and trauma," Singh said. After hours of effort, Singh contacted the SP in Kishanganj, who tasked a local station house officer with tracing the family. "We then first contacted Jitendra, who arrived at the police station around 7.30pm," Singh said. Police said the boy was too traumatised to identify the exact location of the dairy or the name of its owner. No FIR has been filed, as the family, which survives hand-to-mouth, was hesitant to pursue a case. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 2 held in cheating case involving fake US currency exchange
The Chandigarh Police has arrested two persons accused in a cheating and fraud case involving fake US currency exchange. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Hazrat (32), a resident of Mundi Kharar, Mohali, and Sangam (35), of Kajheri village, Sector 52, Chandigarh. Both are unemployed. According to the police, a case was registered on the complaint of Ashish Kumar, a resident of Zirakpur, who works in accounts branch of a Kharar-based firm. On July 31, Ashish was approached by Hazrat, who claimed to possess $4,000 and offered to sell it at half the market rate. The meeting was fixed in Burail, Sector 45, where Ashish arrived with Rs 1.70 lakh. Hazrat, accompanied by associates, allegedly showed him two bundles of $20 notes in a small bag and, after taking the money, handed over the bag. When Ashish opened it later, it was empty. The accused neither delivered the dollars nor returned the cash. Both suspects were arrested on August 7, after being identified by the complainant. Police said further investigation is underway, and the duo will be produced in court for judicial custody.
