Alt-Country Artist Lachie Hayes Drops New Southern-Blues Single ‘Subsatellite'
'Subsatellite' is a musical commentary on how Hayes views the wider landscape of the musical world, and how your placement on that global map that does not signify the value or importance of creative output.
Lachie Hayes explains: 'A subsatellite is an undiscovered, yet theoretically possible, celestial object, a small world that orbits a moon instead of a sun or a planet. It's not at the centre of the solar system, it's not a big, shining body close to a superstar, and it's not even a satellite of a main player. It exists on the fringes of the fringes, far from the brightest and the biggest.
But that doesn't mean it's insignificant. Sometimes, here in the deep south of New Zealand, I find myself in a similar position. We're not big players like in Hollywood, New York, or London. We're not the smaller planets of Australia, or even a well-known satellite like Auckland. We're the outskirts of the outskirts, frequently underestimated and easily labelled.
It's simple to look at a small, distant world and say there's nothing there, that it's a barren place with nothing to offer. But we know better. We may be far from the bright lights, a small spot on the map, but it's filled with character, creativity, and a unique soul.
This song came from that feeling, I am a subsatellite, but I have wheels within wheels, I am more than meets the eye. This song tells the story of how small towns are more than barren worlds. We're alive, we're ambitious, and we're ready to prove it.'
Hayes recorded his new album at MASSAV Studios, with revered music luminary DELANEY DAVIDSON at the helm, producing. On hearing these recordings, Southland label MASSAV Records was launched to sign Hayes as the first artist on their roster, marking an exciting achievement for this award-winning songwriter.
On stage, he is not just a musician but a storyteller; a gifted multi-instrumentalist performer who embodies the rhythm, grit, and nuance that captivates audiences. Lachie is set to capture a much wider audience so listen out for his new album SUBSATELLITE set for release 16 July.

Rhythmonyx Set To Unveil New Music Video 'Bones' At Gadoochi Brewery Video Release Party Saturday August 23, 2025
Southland's own 9-piece genre-bending powerhouse original music band Rhythmonyx is hosting an exclusive video release party for their latest self-produced and mixed single, ' Bones ', on Saturday, August 23 at 8PM at Gadoochi Brewery, 17 Bond St, Invercargill. Written, recorded, produced, and mixed entirely in-house at the band's Invercargill CBD jam room, ' Bones' is a bold statement of independence, creativity, and homegrown talent. Band member Rhys White said this is the first-full length video commissioned by the band and it's something that each member can be proud of. 'The initial goal was to record, produce, and mix the new song in house and keep the whole process as simple as possible, - something I realised very quickly that was almost impossible for a band of this size, but we persevered.' 'We blended produced drums, keys, and recorded bass with live sessions, and did it all in our jam room where we're most comfortable. That energy really comes through in the track.' The music video was produced by local video production creatives Second Beer (Nick McGrath and James Wilkinson), who recently collaborated with Southland musician Lachie Hayes on his standout videos ' This River' and ' Subsatellite'. The ' Bones' video marks a powerful and artistic continuation of Southland's flourishing independent music scene. 'Second Beer Film and Production absolutely nailed it on this one— they're such a rad team to work with,' Rhys said. Second Beer creative director Nick McGrath said conceiving the video was a great challenge, and one that evolved into a really inspiring collaborative experience. 'From our first listen, Bones was an atmospheric trip full of twists and turns,' Nick said. 'A big shout out to lead actors Lilly Ellison and Riley Smith; choreographer Tim Fletcher and his dancers; and to the wider Second Beer crew. Cheers also to the Southern Institute of Technology for their ongoing support, and to Rhythmonyx for entrusting us." Featuring the first-ever screening of the ' Bones' music video, The Video Release Party will be hosted by PHX MC, with a live performance by Rhythmonyx and Second Beer will also discuss the video concept and production. 'It will be a full evening of good vibes and creativity at one of Invercargill's iconic craft beer venues'. The track was mastered by the legendary Troy Kelly at The Armoury Studio in Wellington. The track will be available for purchase on Apple Music and available for streaming on all major platforms from August 23, 2025. Music: Folk Bitch Trio: Breathtaking acoustic pop from Aussie threesome

Subsatellite By Lachie Hayes Produced by Delaney Davidson, this debut by Southland's Lachie Hayes may have its boots in country, but it arrives with the ramshackle rock swagger of Green On Red and the Replacements on The Likes of You ('I'd rather be lying down here in the dirt than doin' business with the likes of you'). Hayes also pulls together the raw edge of traditional blues shaped into the harmonica-wailing Foot Stompin' Boogie; repurposes the spirit and melody from Bob Dylan's Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid for Lonesome Hearted Lovers ('cowboys out west go on surviving, I'll just be a shadow out on the horizon'); and on the title track defines himself: 'I got wheels within wheels … you can't put me in your pigeonhole.' That's true of an album that roars out of rockabilly on Convict Guns and goes murderously folk-country for the eerily echoed, menacing S.O.B. The string-enhanced King of the Night Out on the Tiles confirms his ability to craft a song, a story and a character. Quite a debut. Images / Supplied Now Would be a Good Time By Folk Bitch Trio This debut by Melbourne's assertively named trio comes with local connections: recorded at Auckland's Roundhead; co-produced with Tom Healey (Tiny Ruins, The Veils, Marlon Williams, The Chills and others) and with guest violinist Anita Clark, aka Motte, (Don McGlashan, Tami Neilson, Voom and more). The trio deny the expectation of their name, with close harmony and sensual folk-pop, slashes of wry humour and tense folk-noir (Hotel TV, The Actor). Moth Song is a lyrical riddle seemingly about a violent death (a mother?) and the beautiful Cathode Ray is loaded with medical and sexual imagery: 'we get home, get the scalpel out', 'with a new procedure he made me glow'. With extraordinary harmonies, subtle melodies and lyrics ripe for analysis, this impressive collection finds aspects of familiar folk bent into new and arresting shapes. Images / Supplied Burning Daylight By The Warratahs The Warratahs' almost 40-year career has seen highs, line-up changes, singer Barry Saunders releasing solo albums, and the occasional hiatus. But this album isn't quite as new as you might hope. It collects singles from 2020 with two recent songs, two different versions of one from 2023 (Going Up North and Up North) and live recordings of some old favourites, notably Kupe's Tears and Runaway Days. However, there's honky-tonk, Delta blues (the earthy The Right Time) and a shanty-like sway on Ruby Bay as Saunders considers ships going 'who knows where' over a backdrop of keening violin and the tidal movement of piano. The final piece is Storms at Sea, a fine and broody instrumental with a sample of the marine forecast. Crisply recorded and a roadside layby in their long ride through local landscapes and emotional byways.
