Set up internal complaints committee, Industrial Safety official tells construction units

The Hindu17-07-2025
In a move to strengthen workplace safety, the Joint Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Tiruchi, R. Vimala, has issued a directive to all factories and establishments engaged in building and other construction work in Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Karur districts to comply with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
All employers in the construction sector should immediately constitute an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at their workplaces to address grievances related to sexual harassment. According to the Act, setting up a committee is mandatory, and failure to comply can result in penalties of up to ₹50,000, she said.
Employers have been instructed to display the details of ICC members and the grievance redress mechanism in prominent locations within the factory premises so they are easily visible to all employees.
Additionally, Ms. Vimala referred to the government's latest guidelines, issued through G.O.(MS) No. 64 of the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment (SW3-2) department of June 18, 2025, which lay out standard operating procedures for handling sexual harassment complaints. All establishments are instructed to strictly adhere to these procedures.

Illegal abortion racket busted in Gurgaon, clinic owner on run

Gurgaon: A raid was conducted on a clinic operating out of a Sector 52 house on Tuesday night and abortion kits and surgical tools were seized. The accused, identified as Nani Sarkar, fled moments before the raid and is absconding. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The raid followed a written complaint by the district's nodal officer for Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP). According to the FIR registered at Sector 53 police station, the clinic, M/S Abha Homeo, Optical and Dental Hygiene, was being run without registration or licence to conduct abortions. "An FIR was filed at Sector 53 police station at 2.30am on Wednesday under multiple sections of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, and BNS," a health official said. According to the FIR, the action followed a tip-off by a local resident, who alleged that the clinic, located at house no 1960, Khatu Shayam Road, Dhani Chowk, was openly selling MTP kits and conducting illegal terminations. A four-member team of PNDT nodal officer Dr Pardeep, medical officer, Palra, Dr Harish Kumar, MTP nodal officer Dr Jaiprakash and drugs control officer Amandeep Chauhan reached the clinic around 9.30pm on Aug 19 and saw a man, identified as Sarkar later, carrying a black polythene bag running out. Two men present at the clinic — Jitender and Pushpender, residents of Bharatpur, Rajasthan — told the team that an abortion procedure was in progress and the person responsible had just fled. "Inside, we found a blue drum filled with medical abortion kits, including 10 unopened packs containing Mifepristone and Misoprostol, two partly used kits and one used kit. Speculums, dilators and curettes were also recovered," a health official said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The clinic had no MTP registration or drugs licence, and the man running it was only a certified dispensing optician," the FIR noted. A seized diary also suggested dental treatments were being carried out at the site. Assistant SI Rajbir Singh was assigned the case, in which no arrests have been made yet. Police said efforts are on to trace Sarkar, while Jitender and Pushpender have been listed as witnesses. The MTP Act, passed to provide safe, legal access to abortion under regulated conditions, has often collided with the state's long-standing struggle with a skewed sex ratio. The state has historically recorded one of the lowest sex ratios at birth in India. While the MTP law allows termination of pregnancy under specific medical conditions and humanitarian grounds, sex-selective abortions are banned. Haryana's sex ratio still trails the national average, making regulation of MTP practices a critical part of the state's fight against gender imbalance. Haryana's sex ratio at birth dropped to 910 girls per 1,000 boys in 2024, the lowest in the past eight years.

Absurd: Plane hijacked in Pak in 1998, panic among Hyd cops now!

Hyderabad: Twenty-seven years after a plane was hijacked in Pakistan, a Pakistani X user decided to post about it on his handle, only to trigger an absurd chain of events that led to a case being booked against him in Hyderabad, India, on Aug 14, 2025. It was on May 25, 1998 that Pakistani authorities had arrested three youngsters from Balochistan for hijacking a Pakistan Airlines flight that took off from Gwadar airport. An 'X' user posted about the incident on his handle on Aug 14, 2025, unaware of its possible repercussions. As the post contained words like 'Hyderabad Airport' (in Sindh, Pakistan), 'Hijackers', 'Captain Uzair Khan', 'Delhi', the Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC), which also uses a AI-powered social media listening tool, received an alert about the "threat message" citing the X handle. The APOC official promptly lodged a complaint with the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) police at Hyderabad India, and a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act on Aug 15. Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The message read: "Captain Uzair Khan, calm under duress, breached the hijackers' demand of heading to Delhi by citing fuel shortage-buying precious time. Pakistan Air Force jets intercepted the aircraft, herding it toward Hyderabad Airport # Pakistan. Here's where brilliance met bravado. Khan radioed Hyderabad Airport, but in his coded message, he referred to it as Bhuj Airport. The hijackers were fixated on maps of Bhuj and were forced to reckon that they'd already crossed into Indian territory. " The alert and the complaint give the impression that the post was referring to Hyderabad Airport in India since there was mention of Delhi and Bhuj. When TOI looked at the original post, the author clearly started the thread saying, "The Hijacking that Pakistan Outsmarted," and then continued with, "May 25, 1998. A PIA Fokker F-27, Flight PK-544, lifted off from Gwadar with 33 passengers and 5 crew. Moments later, three armed men from the Baloch Students Organisation seized the aircraft and demanded to be flown to New Delhi." The thread ends by explaining how the hijackers were arrested by commandos at Hyderabad Airport in Sindh, and exactly 17 years later, on May 28, 2015, they were hanged. Unfortunately, neither the complainant nor police seem to be aware of the full content of the original post, which was only describing the 1998 hijacking incident. As a result, a case was registered under Sections 351(4) (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 353(2) (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the BNS and Section 66-D (cheating by personation) of the Information Technology Act. "We have registered a case regarding the hijacking threat-related email received by the airport authorities. We are trying to find out about the person who originally posted it online. The case is under investigation," an RGI Airport police officer said. Long before the advent of social media and even the partition of India, the city of Nizams was not just Hyderabad, it was referred to as Hyderabad (Deccan) in all communications, not to be confused with its twin, Hyderabad (Sindh), in Pakistan. With time and firming of borders, the link between the two Hyderabads got confined to the annals of history. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). DySP, constable booked for demanding Rs 1.5 lakh bribe from atrocity case accused

The Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has booked a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and a head constable in Tapi for allegedly seeking a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh in exchange of not arresting the family members of a man accused under Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. According to a statement from the ACB on Wednesday, DySP Nikita Shiroya of the SC,ST Cell in Tapi, and her writer, head constable Narendra Raman Gamit, have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for seeking a bribe of Rs1.5 lakh. According to the ACB, 'A case under the Atrocity Act and Dowry Prohibition Act had been registered against a total of 8 people, including the complainant in the bribe case, his family and two of his friends, at Kakrapar police station. The investigation was being conducted by DySP Shiroya, while Gamit was her writer. The ACB alleged that both the accused DySP and constable first demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh in exchange for not arresting the friends and family of the complainant and not harassing them. 'But, at the end of the negotiation, they allegedly settled for Rs1.5 lakh,' stated the ACB. The accused, however, contacted the ACB and filed a complaint. The ACB team set a trap on Wednesday. As per the plan, Gamit reached a road outside Kakrapar police station in Vyara city of Tapi allegedly to receive the bribe amount. However, he suspected something was off, and fled in his car without accepting the bribe money. Further investigation is underway.
