Wisconsin women's basketball to renew in-state rivalry this fall

Wisconsin women's basketball to renew in-state rivalry this fall The Wisconsin women's basketball program will renew its I-94 rivalry with Marquette as part of a home-and-home series beginning on Nov. 8, 2025. UW will travel east to Milwaukee for the first leg of the series, then welcome the Golden Eagles to the Kohl Center in 2026. The two squads last squared off in 2017. The Golden Eagles own a 6-5 mark against the Badgers since the 2001-02 season. Wisconsin's Nov. 8 contest against the in-state rival also marks the first game the Badgers' program has announced under new head coach Robin Pingeton, who took over following former head coach Marisa Moseley's resignation earlier this year. The Badgers, who went 13-17 during the 2024-25 slate, will open the 2025-26 campaign with an entirely new roster. Former Wisconsin star Serah Williams and starting center Carter McCray transferred following the season's end, prompting Pingeton to look for talent in the portal. The former Missouri coach responded with seven transfer commitments. Those include Croatian center Dorja Zaja, Illinois forward Shay Bollin, Stony Brook guard Breauna Ware, Howard guard Destiny Howell, NC State guard Laci Steele, Southern Illinois forward Gift Uchenna and Missouri State guard Kyrah Daniels. The Badgers also signed class of 2025 standout Nikki Kerstein in April, bolstering the program's backcourt depth. While both Williams and McCray departed, starting guard Ronnie Porter returns for her fourth season in Madison as the Badgers' leading veteran presence. She, alongside new acquisitions Uchenna and Howell, projects to spearhead Wisconsin's offensive attack this coming season. UFC Coach Reveals He Nearly Pulled Out 'Half-Dead' Merab Dvalishvili from Title Defense Due to Severe Medical Issues

Merab Dvalishvili has built an impressive name for himself as the bantamweight champion since winning the belt when he defeated then-champion Sean O'Malley at UFC 306. Nicknamed 'The Machine' due to his gritty, cardio-reliant, never-say-die attitude in the Octagon, he has built a reputation on his toughness during fights. Even if he fails to secure a takedown, what makes him dangerous is his mentality to shoot for another, results be damned. He may not be the most technical or 'pretty' fighter to watch, but no one can deny he has an unshakeable will to win at whatever cost. Recently, it was revealed that the UFC bantamweight champion's first title defense at UFC 311 against Umar Nurmagomedov was nearly scrapped after his coach, John Wood, considered withdrawing him due to a severe staph infection and open wound. UFC president Dana WhitePhoto By David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile via Getty Images Wood revealed that Dvalishvili was heading into the fight battling antibiotics, pain, and a gruesome staph infection that risked his clearance. Despite the dire circumstances, Dvalishvili insisted on competing, showcasing his trademark toughness in a gritty five-round decision win.. Advertisement "Merab was half-dead for that fight,' Wood said during an interview with MMA Fighting. 'He had an open wound, he had a staph infection, he was on all kinds of antibiotics." Wood even admitted, 'If it was up to me, honestly, I probably would've pulled him out of the fight... That dude could barely walk, but then he'd go spar ten rounds and look phenomenal.' Ahead of his rematch with Sean O'Malley at UFC 316, a fight which some believe is UFC President Dana White's way of angling for a more marketable bantamweight champion, Wood believes that 'The Machine' will continue to leave fans in awe of his toughness and prove his doubters wrong. 'The way that Merab fights, what he brings to the table is just different. People do not understand it,' Wood remarked. 'Sean kind of knows that now. Tim [Welch] knows that... I think it's going to be even more defeating and deflating than it was the first time.'

Merab Dvalishvili lauds ex-champ Aljamain Sterling for UFC 316 title prep

Merab Dvalishvili lauds ex-champ Aljamain Sterling for UFC 316 title prep Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Merab Dvalishvili post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Merab Dvalishvili spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his bantamweight title defense over Sean O'Malley. NEWARK, N.J. – Merab Dvalishvili has set the bar high for gifts at his pal Aljamain Sterling's upcoming wedding. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) on Saturday defended his bantamweight title in a rematch with ex-champ Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the UFC 316 main event. Dvalishvili beat O'Malley with a dominant decision this past fall, and made things look even easier with a third-round submission in the rematch. Afterward, the champ credited his longtime good friend and training partner, former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling, for working with him during training camp – and pledged to give him half of his $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus as a wedding gift. When Sterling was champion, Dvalishvili said he was content to not fight for the belt as long as his friend held it. But O'Malley was the one who dethroned Sterling, which paved the way for Dvalishvili to make his title run – and sent Sterling to featherweight. "In this training camp, my friend Aljamain Sterling helped me so much," Dvalishvili said at his post-fight news conference at Prudential Center. "He doesn't have a fight (booked) – he's getting married. He doesn't really like sparring, but he was sparring with me three times a week (to mimic O'Malley). He was two times better than Sean O'Malley's striking. He was not trying to shoot on me, take me down. "That proves again that it's not always the best fighter who wins. O'Malley got really lucky against Aljo. But I'm grateful for my friend Aljamain Sterling." Dvalishvili has become known for his relentless pace and cardio – but also has been criticized for the lack of finishes on his resume. The submission of O'Malley broke a streak of five straight decision wins for the champ. Overall, 15 of his 20 career wins have gone the distance. His only UFC finish prior to the O'Malley rematch came against Marlon Moraes in 2021. Check out Dvalishvili's full post-fight news conference above.
