Indore tops new 'Super Swachh League'; sanitation workers celebrate with firecrackers, sweets

Time of India17-07-2025
Indore celebrated its continued reign as India's cleanest city, securing the top spot in Swachh Survekshan 2024 and earning a place in the 'Super Swachh League'. President Murmu honoured Indore for its consistent excellence in sanitation.
INDORE: Celebrations erupted in Indore as the city was officially recognised for its unparalleled commitment to cleanliness, securing high marks in the Swachh Survekshan 2024.
The announcement, made on Thursday in Delhi, saw President Draupadi Murmu honouring Indore for its consistent excellence.
Adding another feather to its cap, Indore was the first to be awarded in the elite 'Super Swachh League' in the above 10 lakh population category.
This newly formed league comprises 23 cities in different population categories that have consistently ranked among the top three in previous surveys, highlighting their sustained leadership in sanitation.
In the above 10 lakh population category, Indore competed fiercely with Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.
Sanitation workers across Indore marked the achievement with jubilant celebrations.
They distributed sweets, danced to "Swachhata Anthems," and burst firecrackers, reflecting the collective pride in their city's remarkable accomplishment. Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, and the Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma received the award.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav proudly declared, "Indore is once again at the forefront." He explained that the central govt placed Indore and similar cities in a separate league this time, conducting rankings for other cities independently. "Even within this league, Indore's result is paramount," he added.
Mayor Bhargav emphasised that Indore, becoming a cleanliness model for cities across the country, has moved far beyond the competition for the number one spot.
"Now, Indore is in the role of a guide and will teach other cities the lessons of cleanliness," he stated, hinting at a new era of mentorship.
Indore maintained its first-place ranking in the Swachh Survekshan since 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously lauded Indore, remarking that "when other cities think of doing something, Indore has already done it." This sentiment has proven true for sanitation, with Indore's public participation model receiving widespread acclaim across the nation.
A series of innovations, seamless coordination, and a constant zeal for new initiatives have kept Indore ahead of other cities.
While other cities are striving for the top three positions, Indore has reached a unique pedestal by consistently ranking first for eight consecutive years.
On Thursday, the program announcing the Swachh Survekshan results was broadcast live on large screens at the Municipal Corporation headquarters, allowing residents to witness their city's triumph. Members of the IMC Council and officials joined in the celebrations.

5 tips to help kids learn English if it is not their first language

Growing up, a lot of kids don't communicate in English, except at school. While it is perfectly fine to keep the medium of communication as per one's geography aka mother tongue, the English language is needed everywhere - socially and globally. Having a hold over English gives your child an edge over others, but it can be tricky, if parents don't communicate in the language at home. However, help is always at hand. Here are 5 tips to make your child better at English... Create an English-friendly home environment The introduction of the English language should be part of your child's daily routine in your home. Your child will learn English through daily activities that include reading English books, watching English cartoons and listening to English songs. Frequent exposure to English through visual and auditory experiences, allows brain adaptation which simplifies the learning process. Assign English names to house objects through labels starting with 'door,' 'table,' and 'chair' to help your child learn these words naturally. Your child learns word-object connections through this approach. The essential element is to maintain a stress-free environment that lets your child learn English with enjoyment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Designer Handbags May Be Selling out In Bhairab Due to The Prices Designer Handbags | Search ads Undo Active conversation practice should be encouraged The most effective method to learn any language requires actual spoken practice. Your child should use English in conversation as much as possible, even when they speak incorrectly. The practice of basic dialogues about school activities and personal favorite activities and subjects, should be used. You should speak slowly and select simple vocabulary, to create a comfortable atmosphere for your child to participate in conversations. Your child will develop speaking abilities through participation in language groups or English classes, or by practicing with native speakers online. Online platforms provide opportunities for language exchange that enable your child to interact with learners or native speakers. The practice of genuine conversations leads to improved fluency, together with better listening abilities. Use games, songs and stories Learning becomes most effective for children, when they find their activities enjoyable. Your child can learn new vocabulary through the natural exposure of English language books, songs and educational games. The rhythmic structure and repetitive nature of songs, assists memory because it simplifies word retention. Through storybooks, your child learns vocabulary context that shows word placement in sentences. The practice of English learning apps and games will encourage your child to perform regular exercises. Learning becomes more enjoyable when students view it as games, which decreases their fear of mistakes while boosting their participation rates. This positive approach builds their confidence over time. Be patient and celebrate small successes Learning a new language requires extended time and work. Praise your child whenever they achieve any progress in their English learning journey, regardless of its apparent insignificance. You should praise your child when they master new vocabulary, or build basic sentence skills or understand English stories. As a parent, do not pressure your child. The process of learning includes typical mistakes, which serve as stepping stones for improvement. Your child will feel secure to practice English when you provide encouraging and understanding support. Your child's emotional backing stands equally important to the practice time, devoted to learning language. Make reading a daily habit Regular English reading develops natural vocabulary understanding, grammar knowledge and sentence structure skills in children. Set a daily appointment with your child to read English story books together. Select books with content that your child finds interesting, and at their current reading level to maintain their interest. Your child's understanding will improve if you ask questions that require them to think in English. Reading together helps children improve their pronunciation skills, as well as their fluency in English. You should use library books or electronic books to find diverse reading materials. Your child will gain more confidence in English comprehension and usage through reading activities. Why Friendship Day Matters in 2025: Meaning, traditions, and global roots

Friendship Day is celebrated to honour the bond of friendship. It began in America in 1935 and gained popularity worldwide. In India, it became popular through Bollywood films. Friends provide support and companionship. Friendship promotes understanding and reduces loneliness. Celebrations include exchanging gifts and spending time together. Friendship Day 2025 falls on August 3. Friendship is a bond in several senses as powerful, if not more powerful, than familial bonds. To honour this precious bonding, the world celebrates a special day – Friendship Day. Most nations, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday in the month of August, and for 2025, that falls on August 3. History of Friendship Day The concept of celebrating friendship existed prior to this UN formalisation. In America, the practice began in 1935 when the U.S. Congress declared the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. The move was made as an attempt to promote world harmony after the First World War. This holiday was promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, and gained popularity during the 1930s when she encouraged the sale of friendship cards. It initially met with disbelief, but the idea soon gained popularity and is now a widely celebrated day. Friendship Day, celebrated on the first Sunday of August in India, was highly popularised among youngsters and youth, thanks to Bollywood films in the early 1990s. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Why celebrating Friendship Day is important Friendship Day reminds us of the central role that friends play in our lives. A world that otherwise is divided by differences, conflicts, and alienation, celebrating friendships is not merely about message or gift giving. It is about cherishing the deep strength of knowledge, support, and human connection to bring a more empathetic and more accepting world. Friends are our surrogate family. They give us a unique support system, a safe haven where we can relax enough to be ourselves without worrying about judgment. They are the ones who celebrate with us in our victories, hear patiently our troubles, and stand with us firmly through life's many twists and turns. From the earliest years, when friendships teach us the lessons of caring and sharing, through adolescence, when friends are the best of all buddies with whom to ride the whirlwind of teen metamorphosis, and even in later life, friends fight off loneliness and bring the necessities of living into sunlight and fullness. The day invites us to look at such valuable connections and to thank the positive that friendship brings into our lives. It honours the idea that friendship is a force for good, one that can overcome cultural differences and build mutual respect and understanding between people. The UN focus on engaging young people for community service, promoting international understanding and diversity, has the impact of emphasising this broader vision. It is important more than ever now In addition to the emotional value of not being lonely and having someone to lean on, friendship has important social and even medical implications. It fosters social interaction, broadens our understanding of the world through familiarity with culture, and even provides positive opportunities for networking. Science appears to indicate that healthier mental states, lower levels of depression and anxiety, and even healthier physical bodies and longer lifespans are the consequences of strong social relationships, such as those created through friendship. Friendship Day reminds us to take time out for our friends—whether a quick telephone call, a message, a casual lunch, or an organised outing. It is also a day to renew long-standing friendships and develop new ones. It reminds us that building and nurturing these relationships is a process requiring effort, with equally great rewards. Celebrations and traditions Although the sentiment of celebrating Friendship Day is the same wherever it is observed, the way it is celebrated varies. In India, for instance, a common and very popular practice is to sport friendship bands—coloured ribbons worn on the wrist as a sign of an eternally sealed bond. It is also a custom among many teenagers to wear white T-shirts on this day, autograph each other's shirts with signatures and messages, and thus create a friendship memento. Presents in the form of cards, flowers, chocolates, and customised items are also exchanged. All over the world, celebrations take the form of casual parties and get-togethers, or simply spending time together. Technology has also transformed the way people celebrate, with e-greetings, video messages, and social media posts becoming common ways to express love and gratitude. The medium may differ, but the message remains the same: to celebrate the joy, comfort, and strength that friends bring into our lives. Friendship Day in 2025, on the 3rd of August in India, serves as a gentle reminder to cherish the friends who stand by us through thick and thin—the ones who add a little sparkle and a lot of meaning to life. It is a day to pay tribute to the silent assurances of support, the silly jokes that echo in our memories, and the unshakeable certainty that someone always has our backs. So invite your friends, remind them how much they are loved, and honour the colourful fabric of friendships that weave through our lives.
