Southgate and Hayes winners of PFA Merit Awards
London
Gareth Southgate and Emma Hayes were named as the recipients of the 2025 Professional Footballers' Association Merit Award, which will be presented at a gala dinner in Manchester on Tuesday evening.
Former England boss Southgate took his side to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 as well as the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
Southgate, who had stepped up from his role with England Under-21s, left after eight years in charge of the senior team following defeat to Spain in Germany last summer.
A statement from the PFA read: 'He is widely credited with breathing new life into the national team by integrating a new generation of young talent.
'He has overseen a period of unrivalled achievement by the men's national team, and has been an outstanding ambassador for the game - forging genuine connection between the country, the supporters, and the players.'
Hayes has also been honoured by the PFA for her contributions to women's football.
As Chelsea manager, Hayes guided the Blues to seven Women's Super League titles - including five in succession - as well as winning the FA Cup five times and the League Cup twice.
Hayes left Chelsea in the summer of 2024 to become head coach of the United States women's team, with her side going on to win gold at the Paris Olympics.
'Beyond on-pitch success, it is Hayes' approach to leadership and relentless innovation that has paved the way for progress in women's sport,' the PFA said.

Mo Salah wins record third PFA Player of the Year award
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was named the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year on Tuesday, with the Egyptian becoming the first player to win the award three times. Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017, was the Premier League's top scorer last season, with his 29 goals, along with 18 assists, playing a key role in the club winning the league title, finishing 10 points ahead of runners-up Arsenal. The 33-year-old had already clinched the Premier League Player of the Season award, the Golden Boot for most goals scored and the Playmaker award for most assists, making him the first player to win all three awards in the same season. Salah first won the PFA award in 2018 after his first season at Liverpool, and again in 2022, and this year came out on top of a six-man shortlist, voted for by PFA members from the 92 Premier League and Football League teams. That shortlist included his Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister, along with Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, Arsenal's Declan Rice and Chelsea's Cole Palmer. Salah signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool in April, ending months of speculation linking him with a move to the Saudi Pro League. Aston Villa and England midfielder Morgan Rogers was voted Young Player of the Year, after the 23-year-old scored eight league goals in his 37 starts last season and netted four goals in the Champions League including a hat-trick against Celtic. Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey was named Women's Player of the Year. The Spaniard scored nine league goals in her first season with the club, along with eight goals in the Champions League where Arsenal beat her former club Barcelona to win the trophy. Canadian 21-year-old forward Olivia Smith, Liverpool's leading scorer last season across all competitions with nine goals, picked up the Young Player of the Year award. Smith has since joined Arsenal for a reported fee of one million pounds ($1.35m), making her the first female player to break the seven-figure barrier. Liverpool had four players from last season, including Salah, named in the Premier League team of the year, along with new signing from Bournemouth, Milos Kerkez. Premier League Team of the Year: Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest); Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), William Saliba (Arsenal), Gabriel Magalhaes (Arsenal); Declan Rice (Arsenal), Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool); Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Alexander Isak (Newcastle United), Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest).

Farke hails Nmecha's ‘ice-cold finish' in Leeds' 1-0 win over Everton
PA Media/dpa London Daniel Farke revealed he almost took the ball off Lukas Nmecha before the substitute's late penalty secured Leeds a winning return to the Premier League against Everton. Summer signing Nmecha, a free transfer from Wolfsburg, held his nerve to bury his 84th-minute spot kick - just six minutes after stepping off the bench to replace Joel Piroe - to clinch Leeds a deserved 1-0 victory at Elland Road. Farke said: 'I was a bit worried. He's on the sheet for taking penalties, but as a substitute, he needed more touches and I was thinking of stepping in there and taking the ball off him. 'Thank God I calmed myself down and he prove me right with an ice-cold finish. He deserves today to be in the spotlight after not the easiest of periods in these last few years.' Nmecha struggled with injuries in his last two seasons in the Bundesliga and has gone under the radar since becoming the first of Leeds' eight summer signings so far. 'He's been excellent,' Farke said. 'He's won caps for Germany, but his last couple of seasons were pretty much interrupted with injury. 'It's always a bit risky to bring such a player in, but this was the reason he was a free transfer, more or less a bargain. 'Just with this important goal, that is worth three points, he's paid everything back - but we didn't pay for him! 'He's a great guy, a hard worker, pretty physical attributes for the Premier League.' Leeds dominated for long periods against Everton and Farke added: 'Overall, in a tight game, a hard-fought win, but also a well-deserved win. 'I think for a newly promoted side, it was an outstanding performance. 'We were very dominant in the first half. Nearly 70 per cent possession, 12 shots, I think 21 in total.' Everton boss David Moyes admitted his side's display did not warrant a point, but did not believe Leeds should have been awarded a penalty. Toffees skipper James Trakowski appeared to lean into Leeds debutant Anton Stach's deflected shot and although his arms were by his side, the ball struck his upper arm and referee Chris Kavanagh's decision was upheld by VAR. Moyes said: 'I'm obviously going to say it's not a penalty and I believe it's not a penalty. 'I've been to see the referee. The referee sort of (had) nothing to do with it, he thought it was to do with VAR, the decision they've made.' Moyes added: 'I actually think the referees have had a poor weekend in the opening weekend. 'I think there have been a lot of (poor) decisions and tonight's is another one.' When asked about his side's display, Moyes added: 'We improved a bit in the second half, but I wasn't impressed by how we played at all. 'I've got to give great credit to Leeds. I thought they were incredibly intense, certainly for the first 30 minutes.'
