Gabrielle Union reveals why she is 'scared' about her stepdaughter leaving for college
Gabrielle Union is "scared but excited" about her stepdaughter leaving for college.
The 52-year-old actress has six-year-old Kaavia with NBA star Dwyane Wade - who also has son Ziar, 23, daughter Zaya, 17, and 11-year-old Xavier from previous relationships - and doesn't see how she or her husband will be able to help their teenager when she heads off into higher education.
She told People: "[I am] scared but excited for her. She's an astrobiology major. So we can't help with that. We haven't been able to help with homework since the fourth grade, but we're excited for next year."
The 'Bring It On' star also brought up the age difference between Zaya and her youngest and has enjoyed that the two of them have been able to attend the same school at the same time before now.
She said: "It's funny because Zaya's a senior and [Kaavia's] in kindergarten at the same school.
"And so during Kaav's lunch, Zaya comes and hangs out with Kaav. And this is really special that they're at the same school, at least for one year."
Earlier this year, Zaya revealed that her parents are "really cool" about the idea of her dating and insisted that she loved to "gossip" about boys with her stepmother.
She told Seventeen: "They're really cool about it. Me and my stepmom love to dish the dirt and tap into the high school gossip. "She gets excited for me when I'm like, 'Oh, I like this person."
However, Zaya did note that her dad can be "kind of intimidating" to any potential suitors but his facade will ware off eventually once his "real personality" manages to break through.
She added: "My dad... he tries to scare any person I have interest in. He's kind of intimidating.
"The people I've dated have all been afraid of him in the first interaction. He's gigantic and has this deep, booming voice.
But the facade only lasts for so long and you actually see his real personality. He's a teddy bear!"

John Mulaney blasts 'violent threats' to Olivia Munn and their young family
John Mulaney says his family have received threats over Olivia Munn's comments about Ms. Rachel. The Everybody's Live host has hit out at people who have targeted his wife and their young kids Malcolm, three, and Mei, eight months, after Olivia admitted the YouTuber isn't a regular presence in their household. On Wednesday (11.06.25), John wrote on his Instagram Story: "An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow - unbelievably - been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza. "Because of this, my wife and my two kids are now receiving violent and threatening comments and messages in her DMs. "This is absolutely insane and needs to stop. The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation. "You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism." Over the weekend, the Your Friends and Neighbors actress insisted she wasn't a fan of her kids watching cartoons, or the YouTube star. She told PEOPLE magazine: "I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy. These kid shows drive me crazy. "Malcolm asked for Blue's Clues [recently], and I don't know who showed him Blue's Clues, but they are on my s*** list now. "I said, 'Hell no. Not in my house.' John got him into the Spider-Man cartoons, which is not interesting to me." The publication has since removed the interview for unknown reasons. Ms. Rachel - who has made calls for humanitarian aid to be sent to help children in Gaza - responded to headlines focused on Olivia's comment. She commented on Instagram: 'I'd rather you cover my advocacy for kids in Gaza.' The social media star clarified that she wasn't addressing Olivia, adding that she doesn't "care that she doesn't want to watch the show", and sent "all my love to her and her family". Olivia later admitted she "never anticipated" the direction her comments took. She wrote on her own Instagram Story: "My comments were never meant to diminish the joy, comfort and impact she brings to so many families. 'I don't want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone.'

‘It's over': Why Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom are on the rocks
Tensions around Katy Perry's latest tour are being blamed for a rumoured split between the pop superstar and her movie-star fiancé Orlando Bloom. Days after the Californian diva had a security scare when an audience member charged the stage at her sold-out The Lifetimes tour Qudos Bank Arena show in Sydney, news has surfaced that the A-list couple's relationship may be on the rocks. Ms Perry was left visibly shaken when the fan jumped onto the stage and draped his arm around her as security scrambled to take him down. Although rattled by the intruder, the singer soldiered on and continued to belt out her popular 2008 hit 'Hot N Cold.' 'There's never going to be another show like this, so just enjoy it, Sydney,' she said. 'What the hell is going on?' Ms Perry announced to the crowd as security dragged the man from the stage. The current 15-show tour of Australia and the lukewarm reception for her new album '143' have reportedly added to rising stress levels between Perry and her husband, according to People — as the singer continues her stay in the Harbour City. 'It's over,' one source told Page Six. 'They are waiting till her tour is over before they split.' 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album. It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' After previous relationship counselling, the pop star spoke out in 2024 about their issues and patches where they have needed a break from each other. 'Orlando and I, when we argue, we argue kinda hot and fast and then cool really quickly. It's like, 'La la la la la, I love you. Alright, let's move on.'' She also mentioned the impact that their domestic blow-ups had on their four-year-old daughter Daisy. 'We are fire, fire, fire, and so [Daisy] sees all of that,' Ms Perry said. 'He's a real sage. We both have parts of ourselves. There's two parts of us, our highest good, and then our carnal, material self. Ego. When the ego is running the show, then it's like, 'Whoa.' But when that's in check, then we're both something else.'' Mr Bloom, who is in New York for the Tribeca Film Festival, has spoken previously about the challenging moments in their partnership. 'Sometimes things are really, really, really, challenging. I won't lie. We definitely battle with our emotions and creativity.'
