Ranbir Kapoor and Yash's Ramayana budget revealed: Both parts cost Rs 4,000 crore; more expensive than Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman

As the much-anticipated first glimpse of Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part One continues to trend across social media and dominate online conversations, fans are abuzz with excitement over the film's grand scale and the epic face-off between Ranbir Kapoor's Ram and Yash's Ravan. Amid the growing anticipation, producer Namit Malhotra, who is also the founder and non-executive director of Prime Focus Limited, a leading Indian visual and special effects company, recently spoke with Prakhar Gupta about the budget of the project, the journey behind it, and the vision guiding its creation.
He said, 'So, when we set out to make it, six, seven years ago, just after the pandemic, when we started to really get serious about mounting it and producing it, and budget-wise, it was like everybody thought I'm a lunatic. Because no Indian film, by a long distance, comes close to it. So, to put it simply, it'll be about $500 million by the time we're done, on both films put together, part one and part two, which is over Rs 4,000 crore.'
Despite industry skepticism over the scale of spending, Namit insists the project is both financially responsible and creatively necessary. 'So, I say it like this: we're making the largest film in the world for the greatest story, the greatest epic, that the world should see. And I still think it's cheaper than what it cost to make some of the biggest Hollywood films. So I think we're making a bigger film at a lower cost. Because that Indian in me still believes that we're not being irresponsible financially. We're not being irresponsible with money.' Namit said that the industry might view him as irresponsible, but the investment is justified.

For Namit, Ramayana is a way to honour India's foundational cultural ethos, and to share it with the world. 'I'm taking the greatest belief system of our country. We're taking something that we have pride in. It's a foundational piece of our culture. And I'm going to mount it and present it in the grandest form possible. And it's going to cost whatever it costs. Why is that a risk? When I think about Ramayana, I'm like, is it really a risk? All I'm doing is, I have to just make sure we do justice to people's expectations, and beyond. There has to be pride that must come through, in every Indian first, and then every other person in the world, to say: that's a great piece of culture. I genuinely think the relevance of Ramayana today in the world, not just India, is massive. Look at the wars in the West. Look at the way the countries are operating. I've lived in America. I've lived in the UK. I've hesitated to send my kids abroad to study.'
He also shared his belief that Indian culture and stories like Ramayana offer a much-needed grounding in today's global climate. 'My kids are growing up in Mumbai today. They're going to Indian schools. I want them to study in India. Not because I don't believe in the Western education system, but because I genuinely have greater faith and confidence in India today. And I'm making those decisions. And I'm making that commitment. So I'm like, there's something we're doing right. The West has sort of lost its way a little bit. And nothing like our culture to really help give that grounding and anchor. We're not trying to provide sermons to the world. But what we're saying is: Hey, we've learned a lot from you. Take something from us.'
Director Nitesh Tiwari also echoed this sentiment at the official first glimpse launch earlier this month, expressing that his intention with Ramayana is to evoke pride in India's ancient culture and heritage. Ramayana will be released in two parts, with Part One scheduled for Diwali 2026 and Part Two for Diwali 2027. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Yash as Ravan, with Sai Pallavi playing Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.
Ramayana: Part One's production budget equals those of films such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3. It is higher than the $225 that was spent on the new Superman film, and also higher than the $180 million spent on Jurassic World Rebirth.

‘Anomaly corrected': Priyanka Chaturvedi reacts to ban on ‘vulgar' OTT platforms

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray's faction) Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted to the Centre's ban on several OTT platforms for allegedly showing obscene, vulgar, and 'pornographic' content and said that an anomaly has been corrected. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi was one of the leaders who spearheaded criticism against 'vulgar' content on OTT platforms earlier this year.(PTI) Quoting her months old post on X bashing such content and demanding action against it, she wrote, 'This. Done, anomaly corrected.' Also read: Government bans ULLU, ALTBalaji, 23 other OTT platforms over obscene, 'pornographic' content In the post that she quoted, dating back to May 1, she had written, 'I have raised this in the standing committee that apps such as this, namely, Ullu App and Alt Balaji have managed to escape the ban by I&B ministry on apps for obscene content. I am still awaiting their reply.' The caption accompanied a video from a show on ULLU streaming platform called 'House Arrest', hosted by Ajaz Khan. The clip, which went viral and sparked widespread criticism, shows Khan asking contestants to show sex positions on camera. Also read: Full list of 25 OTT platforms banned by Indian govt over 'pornographic' content In a follow up post on X, Chaturvedi wrote, 'This is great news. Had been talking about these two apps -Ullu and Alt Balaji in particular for their content, had raised it in the standing committee of Communication and IT. Glad @GoI_MeitY paid heed & did what was needed to be done long time ago!' Chaturvedi was one of the leaders who spearheaded criticism against that show and other such 'vulgar' content on OTT platforms. The show was taken down from the platform in May. Also: How OTT platforms skirted warnings against 'pornographic' content; now ALTT, Ullu, Hulchul among 25 banned Centre bans ULLU, ALTBalaji The Centre has taken strict action against apps and websites allegedly showing vulgar and 'pornographic' content. As many as 25 apps and websites have been banned, including ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App, official sources said. According to sources in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the government has ordered the blocking of websites and applications associated with 25 OTT platforms over allegations that these platforms were hosting content deemed 'obscene,' 'vulgar,' and, in some instances, 'pornographic.' They added that the action was taken after the content was found to be in "serious violation" of laws in India. The action comes after the OTT platforms apparently ignored or circumvented warnings issued months ago. Sources in the broadcasting ministry said, 'While the platform removes or edits the web series for a temporary period, it either re-uploads or publishes the unedited version after a certain period, thereby attempting to circumvent the warnings.'

Payal Kapadia: ‘Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan is a moment in Indian cinema'

When Neeraj Ghaywan-directed Masaan created a buzz by winning two awards — FIPRESCI award and the Promising Future prize in the Un Certain Regard section — at the Cannes Film Festival, 2015, director Payal Kapadia, then a student of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, candidly recalls her initial reaction to the film's success, marked by what she termed 'film school arrogance' and skepticism. 'Is Masaan really that good? We wondered. However, after watching it, I was moved by the way Masaan talked about caste and gender. Masaan is a moment in Indian cinema,' she said. Kapadia, the writer-director of Cannes-winner All We Imagine As Light (2024), was in conversation with Ghaywan after a special screening organised by Versova Homage Screenings (VHS) on Thursday evening as Masaan turns 10. Talking about Masaan's significance in Indian cinema, she said: 'It is not often that you see characters in Hindi cinema that (give the impression) we might have met them at some point or capture feelings that we must have experienced at some point in our lives. That's why Masaan is both universal and specific to a particular place. There are so many themes in the film. As cinema students, we were inspired by how this film had used a unique cinematic language — long takes and off-screen sound — in the mainstream space.' A compelling exploration of themes of love, loss, caste, guilt, and ambition, Masaan parallelly follows the stories of its lead characters — Devi (essayed by Richa Chadha) and Deepak (Vicky Kaushal). Ghaywan's initial idea was to explore the story of a man who works at a ghat and can't muster enough courage to speak to a woman he is drawn to. 'Later on, I developed a couple of other tracks. The concept of two people, who were slowly navigating towards each other, completely oblivious of their journeys ending together, was always there.' says Ghaywan. The special screening of Masaan was organised by Versova Homage Screenings (VHS), a community viewing platform created by two brothers, writer-director Rohan K Mehta and actor Prayrak Mehta. They started VHS in April 2024 with the screening of Avinash Arun-directed Killa (2014) and this was their 25th screening. For Payal Kapadia, one of the powerful scenes of Masaan is the ending, when Devi and Deepak meet at a ghat in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and go on a boat tour of Sangam, which is the confluence of rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. 'The ending is powerful. It is about two people who don't know each other and have impacted each other. It goes so well with the metaphor of Sangam of the rivers,' she said. In response, Ghaywan said he always wants to end a story with hope. 'That was also the last shot that we took as the sun was about to set.' Masaan, which boasts of an impressive ensemble cast, features Shweta Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra and Pankaj Tripathi. When Kapadia mentioned how 'its characters are complex', Ghaywan said, 'I don't like unidimensional characters who are honest and sincere. As humans, we are flawed.' Ghaywan's second feature Homebound premiered at Cannes Film Festival's 'Un Certain Regard' section and will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. Also Read | Vicky Kaushal was ridiculed after he was cast as lead in Masaan, says casting director Mukesh Chhabra: 'Kisko hero le liya' Even though a decade has passed since its release, Masaan still stands out for its magnificent use of music and Hindi poetry. 'For Masaan, I wanted a different kind of music. The inspiration was Udaan, which used rock music in a coming-of-age film so beautifully,' he said. The songs of Masaan were composed by Indian Ocean and the lyrics were written by Varun Grover, who also wrote its screenplay. The script deftly weaves references to Urdu & Hindi poets such as Akbar Allahabadi, Basheer Badr, Mirza Ghalib, Dushyant Kumar and Nida Fazli.

Sukesh Chandrashekar 'Can't Wait To Hold' Jacqueline, Promises Flats Worth Rs 1 Crore To 10 Fans

Sukesh also mentioned that Jacqueline Fernandez chooses to do songs that relate to their 'love story'. Alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar has written yet another letter to Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez from jail. In his latest declaration of love, Sukesh wrote to his 'baby girl", Jacqueline, that her new song, Dum Dum, is reminiscent of their 'love story". He thanked Jacqueline for continuously choosing projects which highlight their 'love", and in a bid to make her song a success, Sukesh has urged the actress's fans to indulge in a special task. In the new letter, exclusively obtained by News18 Showsha, Sukesh wrote, 'Even, being in the worst place in the world, my only strength, that has kept me going is 'you'….. There are many reasons when I define 'You', that's a long list, but that list's top 1 reason is 'you' never failing, surprising me and stealing my heart over and over again." Sukesh then mentioned the Dum Dum song and wrote, 'Knowingly, unknowingly, once again every line and the visual of the song 'Dum Dum' relates to 'Us', our love, and our current situation indirectly. Especially the line 'Tere Bina Nikle Hai Dum Dum', 'Saansen Hai Seene Mein Kam Kam', this so means us baby, our current situation vibe." Sukesh mentioned that while Jacqueline has no dearth of projects, she 'specifically" chooses to sign songs which 'indirectly relate" to their 'love story". Sukesh said that this 'speaks words a zillion times, the love you have for me". He added, 'As usual, the world shall call me crazy for this, but a section of the world that knows the meaning of love will understand and agree. Rest, I don't care." To prove his love for the actress, Sukesh is organising a lucky draw for her fans. Sukesh has urged the actress's fans to make Dum Dum the most viewed song of 2025. In 90 days from now, a lucky draw will be conducted in which 10 fans stand a chance to win fully-furnished 2 BHK apartments worth Rs 1 crore in any Indian city of their choosing. The alleged conman wrote, 'All you guys have to do is to make sure 'Dum Dum' song is a blockbuster and the most watched song in the next 90 Days. Ask all your friends and family to watch and comment Dum Dum on its official channel or Jackie's Page. Even Reels posted on Jackie's Insta page on Dum Dum will be counted/entitled for this Lucky Draw." Sukesh then mentioned how he longs to see Jacqueline upon his release from jail. 'Baby, you are my queen, the most beautiful woman in the world. I would do anything to make you feel happy, you know that. Can't wait to hold you in my arms. Just like in the song, your king is coming for you, I am coming to win my love back… Hardly a matter of a few more days," he wrote. He mentioned that he is counting the days till Jacqueline's birthday and cannot wait to see her. Sukesh wrote that he cannot live a second without Jacqueline, and he loves her like crazy. Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who is currently lodged in Delhi's Mandoli jail in connection with the Rs 200 crore extortion case, was rumoured to be in a relationship with Jacqueline. While the actress has repeatedly denied any kind of romantic relationship with Sukesh, she is an accused in the case and has also been questioned by the Enforcement Directorate multiple times. In February 2024, Jacqueline Fernandes also accused Sukesh of using the media as a tool to defame her image. She had also alleged harassment by him and had asked the court to file a case against him. However, the actress withdrew her plea later. First Published: July 25, 2025, 16:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
