Dirty Dough, Craveworthy Brands accused of non-payment of franchise, royalty fees

You can find original article here Nrn. Subscribe to our free daily Nrn newsletter. Dirty Dough and Craveworthy are navigating a lawsuit accusing the companies of breach of contract. The lawsuit was filed in late July in DuPage County Circuit Court in Illinois by Indvestia Ventures. Indvestia entered into a multistate development agreement in 2023 to expand Dirty Dough throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana, but claims the cookie chain 'failed to honor its obligation,' including payment of franchise and royalty fees, as well as the failure to maintain franchise registrations in Indiana, which are legally required. These contractual obligations have remained unfulfilled since Craveworthy acquired a significant stake in Dirty Dough in early 2024 and full ownership in September 2024, Indvestia alleges. "We believe in holding our partners accountable to the agreements they sign and the entrepreneurs they rely on. It's unfortunate that Craveworthy appears to prioritize brand promotion and celebrity partnerships while disregarding the obligations owed to those helping build its foundation,' Vick Mehta, principal of Indvestia Ventures, said in a statement. "This case is not just about a broken promise — it's about protecting the integrity of the franchising ecosystem and ensuring those who invest in good faith are treated fairly." In response to the lawsuit, Gregg Majewski, chief executive officer and founder of Craveworthy Brands, said: 'At Craveworthy, our mission is to build and revitalize standout brands, helping them thoughtfully evolve into high-performing concepts with national reach over time. This takes a village. 'When we welcome an emerging brand into our portfolio, it is often with the understanding that there are both opportunities to build on and challenges to address, some of which may predate our involvement. We remain committed to navigating those matters purposefully and staying focused on what matters most: championing the people behind our brands and those who are on this journey with us. 'We take our contractual obligations seriously and are confident in our position. Our franchise partners are the heartbeat of our overarching organization, and we are committed to supporting them with transparency, respect, and true partnership every step of the way. 'While we do not typically comment on pending litigation, we remain committed to addressing this matter through the appropriate channels and staying focused on what we do best — helping entrepreneurs thrive and creating a stronger future for them.' Dirty Dough was one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the United States in 2024, with year-over-year sales increasing 62.5% to $53.8 million, according to Technomic data. The cookie chain's unit count jumped 15% to finish with nearly 70 locations. That said, several Dirty Dough locations have closed in recent months, including in Augusta, Ga., Louisville, Ky., Parker, Colo., Chattanooga, Tenn., Austin, Texas, Laurel, Md., and Logan, Utah, according to local news reports and Yelp. Craveworthy becomes investor and managing partner of Gregorys Coffee

Multi-restaurant platform company Craveworthy Brands has announced its investment and partnership with Gregorys Coffee, a speciality coffee company based in New York City. The collaboration includes as partners Branded Hospitality, Harborfield Management, Everstar Asset Management and Kitchen Fund. Craveworthy Brands founder and CEO Gregg Majewski stated: 'The human element is at the core of everything we do at Craveworthy, and Gregorys is a brand with a true heartbeat. 'Gregory has built something special: a cult following, a craft product and a clear identity. Our role is to protect that, while layering in the operational firepower to grow thoughtfully. 'There are so many Gregs involved in this partnership - it really feels destined we'd end up partnering with a brand called Gregorys.' Established in 2006, Gregorys is known for its pastries and a food programme curated by an in-house registered dietitian, alongside a selection of rotating limited-edition coffees. The company operates more than a50 locations in the US. The partnership marks a new growth phase for Gregorys, combining its coffee approach with Craveworthy's hospitality-driven mission and operational proficiency. Gregory Zamfotis, the founder of Gregorys, will continue to lead the brand as president. Craveworthy will oversee core business functions such as operations and training, while allowing Gregorys to maintain its distinctive identity. Craveworthy plans to franchise Gregorys in the fourth quarter of this year, leveraging its resources to expand the brand with qualified entrepreneurs across the country. The company's roastery will remain central to operations, providing fresh coffee roasted to order for all locations. Zamfotis stated: 'We built this family-oriented coffee brand for people who hustle hard and expect quality, without compromise. Our 'Gregulars,' our baristas, our roasters, our bakers, everyone is part of this story.' Craveworthy Brands becomes managing partner of New York City-based Gregorys Coffee

You can find original article here Nrn. Subscribe to our free daily Nrn newsletter. Craveworthy Brands announced that the company has invested in and become a managing partner of New York City-based Gregorys Coffee. This announcement is the portfolio company's fourth brand investment of 2025, after becoming a managing partner of Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken in March, acquiring Kinnamōns Bakery later that month, and entering a joint venture partnership with Jon Taffer and the Taffer's Tavern brand in May. Craveworthy Brands joins investment platform Branded Hospitality, growth equity investor Kitchen Fund, and private investment firm Harborfield Management Co. in becoming investors and managing partners of Gregorys. Kitchen Fund helps to provide capital industry expertise and network access. The firm's current investments include Cava, Dig Inn, Sweetgreen, and Inday. Harborfield was founded by Ezra S. Field, former managing director and CIO of Subway and Dave's Hot Chicken owner, Roark Capital. Branded Hospitality, cofounded by Michael Schatzberg, is known for its investments in the foodservice and food technology spaces, including in GoTab, Ovation, Tattle, Mighty Quinn's, and Craveworthy brand, Big Chicken. 'Gregorys is an incredible brand, and we were looking for coffee,' Gregg Majewski, founder and CEO of Craveworthy Brands, told Nation's Restaurant News. 'They did a fabulous job competing in an environment like New York, and that attracted me to the brand. When we bought [New York City-based] Taim, I wasn't familiar with Gregory's, but I started going into New York more and I just became a fan.' Gregorys was founded in 2006, and over the past two decades has expanded to around 50 locations, mainly in the New York City area, but with newer locations in Washington, D.C., Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and Tennessee. The company is known for its traditional coffee-focused menu, scratch-made pastries, and healthier options like vegan cold foams and low-sugar beverages. 'Our true competitor is Starbucks,' Majewski said. 'The other brands are more known for the sweet drinks. Gregorys is the traditional coffeehouse, and we're going to lean into their values. Yes, you can go and do the drive-thrus like 7Brew and Dutch Bros, but coffee isn't their focus. Our focus will always be coffee first, and we think there's a niche and a need for that.' Moving forward, founder Gregory Zamfotis will remain on as company president, as the brand looks to expand through a franchising program with its new investors, starting in the fourth quarter of 2025. 'Our 'Gregulars,' our baristas, our roasters, our bakers, everyone is part of this story,' Zamfotis said in a statement. 'As we embark on this new chapter of national growth, we'll continue putting love and care into every roast, every pastry and every interaction we have in our local communities.' Earlier this year, Gregorys Coffee came under fire after a former vice president of human resources of the company filed a lawsuit against both Gregorys and Zamfotis for alleged workplace hostility and discrimination. Per the lawsuit, which is ongoing, Majewski said that 'he takes every accusation seriously' and that Craveworthy Brands remains committed to being 'as inclusive of an organization that's out there' Moving forward, Craveworthy Brands anticipates that Gregorys Coffee has the potential to be a 'coast-to-coast player' in the coffee segment.
