Iran's attack on Qatar air base hit geodesic dome used for US communications, satellite photos show - Region

Al-Ahram Weekly8 hours ago
An Iranian attack on an air base in Qatar that's key to the U.S. military hit a geodesic dome housing equipment used by the Americans for secure communications, satellite images analysed late Friday by The Associated Press show.
Hours after the publication of this AP report, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell acknowledged that an Iranian ballistic missile had hit the dome. Qatar did not respond to requests for comment about the damage.
The Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base outside of Doha, Qatar's capital, on June 23 came as a response to the American bombing of three nuclear sites in Iran — and provided the Islamic Republic a way to retaliate that quickly led to a ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump ending the 12-day Iran-Israel war.
The Iranian attack otherwise did little damage, likely because the U.S. evacuated its aircraft from the base, which is home to the forward headquarters of the U.S. military's Central Command, before the attack.
Trump also has said that Iran signalled when and how it would retaliate, allowing American and Qatari air defence to be ready for the attack, which briefly disrupted air travel in the Middle East, but otherwise didn't tip over into the regional war long feared by analysts.
Images show burn marks, the dome gone after the attack
Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC show the geodesic dome visible at the Al Udeid Air Base on the morning of June 23, just hours before the attack.
The U.S. Air Force's 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, which operates out of the base, announced in 2016 the installation of the $15 million piece of equipment, known as a modernised enterprise terminal. Photos show a satellite dish inside the dome, known as a radome.
Images taken June 25 and every day subsequently show the dome is gone, with some damage visible on a nearby building. The rest of the base appears largely untouched in the images.
In a statement, Parnell said the missile strike 'did minimal damage to equipment and structures on the base.'
'Al Udeid Air Base remains fully operational and capable of conducting its mission, alongside our Qatari partners, to provide security and stability in the region,' he added.
The London-based satellite news channel Iran International first reported on the damage, citing satellite photos taken by a different provider.
Trump downplayed the attack while Iran boasted about it
In the U.S., Trump described the Iranian attack as a 'very weak response.' He had said that Tehran fired 14 missiles, with 13 intercepted and one being 'set free' as it was going in a 'nonthreatening' direction.
'I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured," he wrote on his website, Truth Social.
The White House had no immediate comment after Parnell's acknowledgement on Friday. Trump visited Al Udeid Air Base on May 15 as part of his Mideast tour.
After the attack, Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard insisted that the air base had been the 'target of a destructive and powerful missile attack.' Iran's Supreme National Security Council also said that the base had been 'smashed,' without offering any specific damage assessments.
Potentially signalling that he knew the dome had been hit, an adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei separately said that the attack had disconnected the base's communications.
'All equipment of the base was destroyed, and now the U.S. command stream and connection from Al Udeid base to its other military bases have been completely cut,' said Ahmad Alamolhoda, a hard-line cleric.

Lavrov warns against anti-Russia alliances in Asia during North Korea visit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday warned the United States and its allies against creating security threats for Moscow and Pyongyang, praising North Korea for its military support in Ukraine, which he described as 'invincible brotherhood.' Speaking to journalists after talks with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui in the resort city of Wonsan, Lavrov said Moscow and Pyongyang's cooperation contributes to stability on the Korean peninsula. 'Russia warns the United States, South Korea, and Japan against misusing their relations to build alliances directed against any party, including the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Russia,' Lavrov said, according to Russian media. Lavrov said North Korea's leadership had drawn the right conclusions long before what he called the 'Israeli-American strikes against Iran.' 'And for this very reason, that these conclusions were reached in a timely manner, no one thought of using force against Korea, even though the military buildup around it with the participation of the United States, South Korea and Japan continues,' he said. The Russian minister added that Moscow understands Pyongyang's reasons for its nuclear programme and respects its actions, noting that the 'technologies used by the DPRK are the product of the work of its scientists.' UKRAINE COOPERATION Lavrov directly addressed the participation of North Korean forces in the conflict in Ukraine, saying their involvement in the 'liberation' of Russia's Kursk region was direct proof of the nations' strong bond. He said the North Korean side had affirmed its 'unequivocal support' for all of Russia's objectives in its special military operation. 'Russia had no reason to refuse Pyongyang's help in the special operation; it was a sincere expression of solidarity,' Lavrov said, adding that any decisions on further assistance were up to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Choe Son Hui, the North Korean foreign minister, said her country supported Russia's right to protect its territorial integrity and sovereignty 'unconditionally and steadfastly.' The two nations have deepened their ties since signing a mutual defence pact last year. Western governments have accused the Kremlin of trading Russian military technologies for North Korean weapons and manpower for the war in Ukraine, a move they say gives Pyongyang's army modern combat experience. Ukraine's military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, said in an interview with Bloomberg that North Korea was now supplying Russia with up to 40% of its needed ammunition. South Korea's intelligence service has reported that Pyongyang may be preparing to deploy additional troops to Russia after sending more than 10,000 soldiers to fight. Lavrov's visit is the latest high-level meeting between the two countries. It comes less than a month after Pyongyang reportedly agreed to send 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to Russia's Kursk region. During his visit, Lavrov also dismissed attempts to create a 'multinational force to protect Ukraine' as 'pure fantasy.' The Russian foreign minister arrived in North Korea for a three-day visit as part of a 'second round of strategic dialogue,' his ministry's spokesperson said. He is expected to travel to China for a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting after his visit.

4 Dead, Dozens Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Dominican Coast

Israa Farhan At least four migrants have died and around 20 remain missing after a boat carrying nearly 40 people capsized off the coast of the Dominican Republic, according to local authorities. The vessel, known locally as a "yola," was undertaking an illegal journey toward the US territory of Puerto Rico when it sank in the Caribbean Sea. The passengers were reportedly attempting to reach American shores in search of better opportunities. Rescue operations led by the Dominican Navy and Civil Defense successfully saved 17 individuals. Among the survivors were 10 Dominican nationals and 7 Haitians, including one child. Authorities are continuing search and recovery efforts, although hopes are fading as time passes. Incidents like this underscore the dangers faced by migrants who resort to perilous sea routes in hopes of escaping poverty and political instability. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream

US State Department to Lay off Over 1,350 Employees

Israa Farhan The United States Department of State is set to begin laying off more than 1,350 employees starting Friday, as part of a sweeping reform plan under President Donald Trump's administration aimed at reshaping the American diplomatic corps. The unprecedented move has drawn strong criticism from former diplomats and analysts who warn it could significantly weaken US foreign policy efforts. According to an internal memo distributed to staff, the layoffs will affect 1,107 civil service employees and 246 members of the domestic diplomatic staff. This marks one of the most significant workforce reductions in the department's recent history. The restructuring comes amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to reduce federal spending and streamline government operations. The State Department has faced mounting pressure in recent years to modernize its systems and cut operational costs. Still, many fear the changes could undermine the country's ability to project influence abroad and maintain effective diplomatic engagement. Since taking office, President Trump has pushed for institutional reforms across the federal government, including the Department of State. His approach focuses on reducing workforce numbers and overhauling legacy structures. However, the strategy has provoked concern among foreign policy experts, who argue that such deep staffing cuts risk diminishing America's global diplomatic reach at a time of increasing international complexity. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream
