Growing global turbulence: Dar calls for inclusive dialogue, cooperative diplomacy over confrontation

NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister (DPM/FM), Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, on Wednesday called for an inclusive dialogue and cooperative diplomacy over confrontation amid times of growing turbulence across the world as 'the cost of unresolved disputes, long-running conflicts, unilateral actions, and disregard for international law are being felt in every region.'
In his address delivered at the reception hosted by Pakistan's Mission in New York on the occasion of Pakistan's Presidency of the UN Security Council, the DPM emphasized Pakistan's unwavering commitment to multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and the foundational principles of the UN Charter.
Speaking to diplomats, UN officials and representatives of member states, Dar underscored that at the heart of Pakistan's foreign policy was a firm belief in multilateralism and the rule of international law.
'The purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, especially the peaceful settlement of disputes and the non-use or threat of force, are foundational to the United Nations and indispensable for a just international order,' he stated.
Dar's remarks came as Pakistan holds the presidency of the UN Security Council this month. He noted that Pakistan's leadership has been guided by these very principles in both deliberations and concrete actions taken during its tenure.
Under Pakistan's presidency, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2788 earlier today, following a high-level open debate on the peaceful settlement of disputes, the first of three key priorities outlined by Dar. He described this core principle of the UN Charter as 'too often sidelined,' and emphasized the need to bring it back to the center of the Council's work.
Dar also stressed the importance of revitalizing multilateralism, describing it not as a slogan but as a necessity.
'The Security Council must be seen not only as a chamber of reaction but as a forum of prevention, problem-solving, and principled leadership,' he asserted.
A third focus of Pakistan's presidency is enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, particularly the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Dar announced that a Council briefing with the OIC was scheduled for July 24, highlighting the 57-member body's vital role in global peacebuilding.
Reaffirming Pakistan's active diplomatic engagement, Dar said the country remains committed to working with partners around the world to advance the shared goals of peace, development, and human rights. 'Our engagement transcends the Security Council and is reflected across the UN system — from the General Assembly to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and beyond,' he noted.
Dar highlighted Pakistan's leadership in global climate and development discourse and reiterated its support for strengthening the UN's three pillars: peace and security, development, and human rights. He also announced Pakistan's candidacy for the Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term, which is endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Group.
'Our engagement with the Human Rights Council is guided by the values of truth, tolerance, mutual respect, consensus-building, and engagement,' he said, expressing the hope for broad international support.
Concluding his address, Dar urged the global community to rise above divisions. 'In a world facing deepening divides and mounting challenges, we must choose cooperation over confrontation, and diplomacy over force. Pakistan stands ready to work with all of you to advance these common goals,' he affirmed.

PM Shehbaz condemns Israeli settlers for storming Al-Aqsa mosque

Listen to article Pakistan on Monday unequivocally condemned the recent storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli ministers, accompanied by settler groups and shielded by Israeli police. 'This sacrilege against one of Islam's holiest sites is not only an affront to the faith of over a billion Muslims, but also a direct assault on international law and the collective conscience of humanity,' Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on his X timeline. Pakistan unequivocally condemns, the recent act of storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli ministers, accompanied by settler groups and shielded by Israeli police. This sacrilege against one of Islam's holiest sites is not only an affront to Muslims worldwide but also a… — Shehbaz Sharif (@CMShehbaz) August 4, 2025 He said that such systematic provocations by the occupying power, coupled with reckless calls for annexation, imperil the prospects for peace. The prime minister said that Israel's shameless actions were deliberately inflaming tensions in Palestine and the wider region, pushing the Middle East closer to further instability and conflict. 'Pakistan reiterates its urgent call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to all acts of aggression, and the revival of a credible peace process leading to an independent and viable State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, under international law and relevant UN resolutions,' Prime Minister Shehbaz added. Separately, Islamabad has strongly condemned the provocative and deeply offensive desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque by thousands of Israeli settlers, including senior ministers, officials, and Knesset members, under the protection of Israeli occupying forces. In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said the presence and statements of senior Israeli officials, and the repugnant declaration that 'the Temple Mount is ours,' are a dangerous and deliberate attempt to provoke religious sentiments across the world, escalate tensions, and alter the status of Al-Aqsa Mosque. He said Israel's expansionist attempts are a deliberate effort to destabilize the region and sabotage any meaningful path to peace. These provocations risk igniting a catastrophic spiral of violence across the region. The spokesperson emphasized that the world must not remain silent in the face of such systemic, illegal, inhumane, and unlawful aggression. Such actions constitute a blatant violation of international human rights and humanitarian laws, the UN Charter, as well as various UN and OIC resolutions. He urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate and concrete steps to hold Israel accountable for its illegal actions and to protect the religious sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rights of the Palestinian people, in particular the right to self-determination. The spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering support for the creation of a sovereign, independent, viable, and contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Earlier, Israeli airstrikes continued in Gaza, and far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, sparking condemnation from regional powers. Ben-Gvir was among approximately 1,250 individuals who prayed at the site under Israeli military protection. The compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, holds deep religious significance—being the holiest site in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. It remains under Jordanian custodianship, and a longstanding agreement permits Jewish visits but prohibits prayer.

Israel says ground troops conducted raids in Syria

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Israel's military said Sunday ground troops had operated in southern Syria, seizing weapons and questioning individuals suspected of arms trafficking, in the latest cross-border raid since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December. A military statement said that troops had completed overnight 'a mission involving on-site questioning of several suspects involved in weapons trafficking in the Hader area in southern Syria', near the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. 'Troops entered four locations simultaneously and located numerous weapons that the suspects had been trafficking,' the statement said. Footage released by the military showed uniformed Israeli troops in armoured vehicles and on foot operating at night. An Israeli army division remains 'deployed in the area, continuing to operate and prevent the entrenchment of any terrorist elements in Syria, with the aim of protecting Israeli civilians, and in particular, the residents of the Golan Heights', the military said. As an Islamist-led offensive late last year toppled Syrian president Assad, Israel deployed troops to the UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights which has separated Israeli and Syrian forces following their 1973 war. In July, Israel bombed Syrian government forces in the capital Damascus and in Sweida province to force their withdrawal from the southern region amid a wave of sectarian violence. Israel said it was acting in defence of the Druze community, but some diplomats and analysts say its goal is to weaken the Syrian military and keep the forces of the new government away from the frontier. Israel launched hundreds of strikes on military sites following Asaad's overthrow in December, saying at the time it wanted to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of the new authorities it considers jihadists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded the demilitarisation of southern Syria.
