MIRI (June 11): The Magistrates' Court here today sentenced a man to 10 months in jail for threatening to hurt his younger sister using a knife last month.
Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the sentence on Zulqimi Sulaiman of Kampung Batu Satu in Kuala Baram after he pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal intimidation, framed under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
The Section provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The offence was committed at the family's home in Kampung Batu Satu at around 3.15pm on May 16.
According to the charge, Zulqimi pointed a knife towards his sister while threatening to cause injury to her and others.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Luqman Hakim Sahrol Bahar prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.

"The account published an offensive message about the UPSI students involved in the recent road tragedy. "We advise the public not to upload any content that may cause unease or disrupt public order," he said in a statement today. Earlier, it was reported that the Perak State Education Department had directed the district education office to prepare a full report on the teacher's social media post. Perak state executive councillor for education, higher learning, youth and sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah was quoted as saying that investigations found the Facebook account to belong to a teacher serving at a secondary school in the state. The teacher sparked controversy after posting an offensive remark that went viral and caused distress to the victims' families. On Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman also ordered Indonesian nationals Andriyanto, 33, Wisnu Zaeni Malik, 21, Udin, 26, Rendi Farizi, 31, Ricky Muhamad Hakim, 22, and Rudi Ramli, 40, to be referred to the Immigration Department upon their release for deportation. Judge Iris Awen Jon made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against Abdul Malek Faisal Kamil, 38, at the end of the prosecution's case. Abdul Malek, who sells live chickens, was charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to a now 28-year-old man in Kampung Bidi, Krokong, Bau at around 10am on Sept 25, 2022. The charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and may also include a fine or whipping, upon conviction. It was understood that during the incident, the victim was waiting for a friend – also a witness in the case – when he was approached by three unidentified men. One of the men reportedly struck the victim with a golf club, resulting in a skull fracture and internal brain bleeding that required surgery on Sept 27, 2022. During the trial, Abdul Malek's counsel Arthur Liang Dawat argued that the reliability of the identification made by the victim, as well as another eyewitness, was highly questionable.
