Asia champ Alex Lau targets world rankings rise after 2-year top 40 breakthrough

New Asia squash champion Alex Lau Tsz-kwan said on Friday that he had his eyes on entering the world top 30, after finally breaking through a two-year 'bottleneck' at No 40.
The Hongkonger has reached a career high on the rankings list after winning gold in Malaysia at the Asian Squash Championships last week, where he beat Qatar's Abdulla Al-Tamimi 3-0 in the final.
And after training overseas, which he called 'finding the right direction for me', the 29-year-old said he expected to focus on competing in more World Series tournaments so he could chase ranking points.
'No 40 was like a bottleneck for me for almost two years, so reaching the 30s for the first time meant a lot to me,' Lau, who is now ranked 39th, said.
'Your ranking tells your consistency throughout the season; I felt I could reach a higher spot but got stuck instead. Other players might be able to play their strongest game whoever they play, but my game might work only on specific players.'

Setbacks in New Zealand and Australia, even with favourable draws, were offset by better results in China, England, Singapore and Switzerland.

Saudi Super Cup: post-Ronaldo slump hits second semi-final, fans mix business with pleasure

Scenes outside Hong Kong Stadium on Wednesday could not have been any more different to just 24 hours earlier, when football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo pulled 30,000 fans from across the world to the venue in Causeway Bay. What a difference a day makes. Walking towards the stadium two hours before Wednesday's 8pm kick-off, you could easily be forgiven for not knowing there was a match going to take place. Al-Qadsiah were playing Al-Ahli Saudi in the second semi-final of the Saudi Super Cup, by the way. Long gone was the sea of Ronaldo shirts and the carnival atmosphere, while the crowd-control barriers looked more like a hangover from the day before, when 10-man Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad 2-1. This time little more than 100 fans, mostly from Saudi Arabia, had begun to congregate from around 6.30pm. A smattering of fans watch the Al-Qadsiah v Al-Ahli match at Hong Kong Stadium. Advertisement Supporters turned the tired Hong Kong Stadium into a colourful corner of Riyadh, as they roared Ronaldo's Al-Nassr into Saturday's Saudi Super Cup final. The 2-1 victory over last season's league and cup winners Al-Ittihad was all the more impressive for the fact Jesus' team played with 10 men for more than an hour following a red card for Sadio Mane. Ronaldo laid on the winning goal for fellow Portuguese Joao Felix after 61 minutes. 'Cristiano Ronaldo is different from any other player in the world for his prestige and his professionalism throughout his career,' head coach Jesus said. 'Ninety per cent of the fans who came to the stadium came to see Cristiano.
