McDonald's store traffic falls unexpectedly as diners grow uneasy about economy

Boston Globe01-05-2025

Flagging consumer confidence is hurting U.S. demand at McDonald's and other restaurant chains. Last week, rival Chipotle also reported weaker-than-expected same-store sales in the first quarter. Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright said concern about the economy was the 'overwhelming reason' consumers dined out less often.

McDonald's has responded by expanding its U.S. value menu, which lets customers buy one item for $1 when they buy a full-priced item. It's also offering its $5 Meal Deal through this summer. That deal was introduced last June and extended several times.
Revenue at the Chicago chain fell 3% to $5.95 billion, short of analysts' forecast of $6.09 billion, according to FactSet.
Net income fell 3% to $1.86 billion. Adjusted for restructuring charges and other one-time items, the company earned $2.67 per share, beating Wall Street projections by a penny.
Shares of McDonald's Corp. fell just over 1% before the opening bell Thursday.

Chipotle Finally Adds Southwest Ranch to Menu

Ranch is officially coming to the Chipotle menu. While many other burrito chains throughout the country have embraced creamy, southwest-style ranch sauces on their menus, Chipotle has long resisted such a move. But it sounds like that's officially changing this month. On Monday, Chipotle officially announced the launch of Adobo Ranch, which is the company's own twist on the beloved American dressing and dip. Made fresh in-house with fresh ingredients, the new sauce features 'adobo pepper, sour cream and a unique blend of herbs and spices,' which the company said brings a "craveable kick to the brand's signature burritos, bowls, salads, tacos and quesadillas." The company expects the new sauce to be particularly popular amongst its younger customers. "Ranch has become a cultural phenomenon, especially among Gen Z, who are finding creative ways to enjoy it beyond the traditional salad," said Chris Brandt, President and Chief Brand Officer said in a news release. "Our new Adobo Ranch taps into this passion, giving fans a craveworthy way to customize their Chipotle order with a completely new flavor." Adobo Ranch will be officially coming to all Chipotle locations across the U.S. and Canada starting Tuesday, June 17, and the company even announced that Chipotle Rewards members will be able to try the new sauce for free on launch day. Jim Cramer rebuffs recent downgrades of McDonalds, Tesla and Apple

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday pushed backed against recent downgrades of stocks he believes can persevere, including McDonald's, Tesla and Apple. "Some stocks should not be downgraded," he said. "It's just not worth it, because it's only a matter of time before they snap right back." Some analysts have been negative on McDonald's, including Morgan Stanley, who worried about pressure on the fast sector in general. One firm, Loop Capital, fretted over negative feedback for the new chicken strips offering. But Cramer expressed confidence in McDonald's ability to quickly discard unpopular products and adapt to changing conditions. For example, he said, the company rolled out a successful discount meal after customers complained prices had become too high. The strength of McDonalds, Cramer added, is that "they don't fight battles they can't win — when something doesn't work, they just dump it, and they move on." While Cramer conceded he's not thrilled about Tesla CEO Elon Musk's feud with President Donald Trump — or that sales of the company's electric vehicles are declining — he said he feels there is "another act coming from Musk." He pointed out that Tesla is set to launch robotaxis later this month. Although Tesla was hit with two downgrades on Monday, he noted that the stock still managed to close up 4.55%. Much of Wall Street has soured on Apple, Cramer surmised, noting a dip in enthusiasm at the Worldwide Developers Conference. While the iPhone maker is "in dry spell," he claimed it has the capacity to acquire something new, like AI search outfit Perplexity. Apple "is not a company that stands still," Cramer continued. He also emphasized that there's a reason this may not have been Apple's biggest year — it has faced serious pressure from the White House and its harsh tariff policies. Apple is scrambling to reduce its reliance on China by moving some production to India, and the company committed $500 billion to manufacture in the U.S. in an effort to satisfy Trump's demands. But the president has insisted all phones be made in the U.S., not India, threatening 25% or more tariffs on products made abroad. "As long as nobody switches to Android, call me sanguine about Apple," he said. "Not more than that…certainly not less than that." McDonald's, Tesla and Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.
