Heart of Wales line improvements praised by Ken Skates

ONE of the most picturesque rail routes in the UK has been praised by Welsh transport minister Ken Skates for showing consistent improvement in performance and reliability for passengers this year.
The latest figures for the Heart of Wales line, which connects Swansea with Shrewsbury via Llandrindod Wells, show that the reliability rate of services along the route stood at 97.5 per cent between June 22 and July 19.
During this period, 283 services were scheduled to operate and 276 services ran. There were seven cancellations.
Punctuality of these services arriving within three minutes of their advertised time also increased to 81.2 per cent, up from 64 per cent at the beginning of the year, bringing reassurance and an overall better experience to local passengers and day travellers.
Since January 2025, the reliability of trains run on this line has consistently been above 90 per cent.
The Heart of Wales (HoW) line travels through some of Wales' most breathtaking landscapes, including the rolling hills and beautiful rural villages of Powys, and has been described as a "national treasure".
In February of this year, it was named by National Geographic among the world's best train trips.
The route offers not just a means of transport but an experience, attracting customers from near and far and acting as a lifeline for work, education and leisure.
Cabinet secretary for transport Ken Skates said: 'Delivering better transport is a priority for this government and I'm pleased to see this encouraging improvement on the Heart of Wales line.
'It's good to see improvements in the experience of passengers and I'd like to thank all those involved in delivering this.'
Colin Lea, planning and performance director at Transport for Wales, added: 'These figures are encouraging and reflect the work we and our partners at Network Rail have been doing to deliver a consistently reliable train service.
'We recognise the importance of the service to those communities along this line and that there have been times recently where our service hasn't been to the standard expected by customers.
'While it's pleasing to see performance improving and heading in the right direction, there are still improvements to be made.'
The improved figures are thanks to the hard work of staff and Network Rail partners who maintain the track and trains with exceptional dedication.
It's also a result of the passion of all those involved in the HoW Line's local railways and community rail initiatives, who work closely together to improve the railway experience across Wales.
Local railways is a joint initiative with industry partners Network Rail and BTP, working together to improve the overall rail experience in localised locations.
Examples of recent local railways initiatives include a deep clean of Llandrindod station; the successful introduction of new active travel class 153 trains; the trial of additional Sunday services during high summer; siting a new container on the northbound platform at Llandrindod which allows rapid access to essential materials without requiring a block of the railway line, reducing delays and signaller workload thus increasing reliability.

Leanne and Dan, who run the YouTube channel The Buddymoon, have been discovering the picturesque locations of Wales in their van, covering everything from the Brecon Beacons all the way up to the Llangollen Canal. ‌ In the most recent instalment of their Welsh journey, entitled 'I Think We Have Found The Best Part of Wales', the pair hit the road to explore what the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd has to offer. ‌ During their trip, the couple appeared to relish the sights, stopping at local gems including Porthmadog, Criccieth, and the whistling sands of Traeth Porthor. ‌ But when they reached a well-known village, the couple faced a particular challenge. This could have been because their vehicle was too "big" as upon arrival, they discovered they couldn't "even stop". She revealed that as a youngster, her father would take them to the harbour during seaside trips, where they would similarly observe the boats coming and going. Leanne said it was "such a fun time" to sit and watch this happen, adding that it was a "nostalgic moment" that she was feeling in Abersoch. Tourists find 'absolutely beautiful' North Wales village but immediately notice problem

A couple encountered an unforeseen problem when they visited an "absolutely beautiful" village in North Wales. Leanne and Dan, the faces behind the YouTube channel The Buddymoon, have been exploring the idyllic sights of Wales in their van, spanning everywhere from the Brecon Beacons right up to the Llangollen Canal. In the latest video instalment of their Welsh adventure, titled 'I Think We Have Found The Best Part of Wales', the couple takes to the road to investigate the sights on offer on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd. On their travels, the couple seemed to enjoy the sights, visiting local favourites such as Porthmadog, Criccieth, and the whistling sands of Traeth Porthor. However, when they arrived at a popular village, they experienced a specific problem, possibly due to their transport being too "big". As they entered, they learned that they couldn't "even stop". Dan said: "So we just come to a town called Abersoch - Abersoch? Probably saying it wrong, but we can't find any parking, so I don't think it's going to be a town that we can actually stop in, but it looks absolutely beautiful. "Like, over here, you can see the beach and the mountains and the greenery, but we can't find any parking; we're too big. Guess we're not going to be able to explore this town because we can't park the van." Abersoch is a small seaside village that offers visitors access to picturesque beaches and watersports, including wakeboarding, paddleboarding, waterskiing, sailing and windsurfing. Known as the "Welsh Riviera" and "Cheshire-by-the-sea", the village was even named one of the most desirable locations in the UK in 2023 by Leanne noted that Abersoch was "definitely a lot busier" than the last place they visited, but dubbed it "really cute" and pointed out the charming local shops and cafes. She also spotted tractors launching boats on the beach, so, undeterred by the parking situation, Leanne left Dan and the van at the top of a path so she could take a look. In a nostalgic recollection, Leanne highlighted how the tractors brought the boats in and out of the water, prompting her to recall a similar scene from her childhood. She explained that when she was little, her father used to take them to the harbour when they visited the seaside, where they would also watch the boats go in and out. Leanne said it was "such a fun time" to sit and watch this happen, adding that it was a "nostalgic moment" that she was feeling in Abersoch. The couple's praise of the village didn't end there, however. Dan later noted that Abersoch was also "very nice" from above with their drone, saying it looked "absolutely incredible."
