UK backs Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, Lammy says
RABAT, June 1 (Reuters) - Britain's foreign minister, David Lammy, said on Sunday that the UK considers Morocco's autonomy proposal as the most feasible basis to resolve the conflict over Western Sahara.
The long-frozen conflict pits Morocco, which considers the territory as its own, against the Algeria-backed Polisario front, which seeks an independent state in the desert territory.
The autonomy plan submitted by Morocco in 2007 stands "as the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution of the dispute," Lammy told reporters after talks with Morocco's foreign minister.
"The UK will continue to act bilaterally, including economically, regionally and internationally in line with this position to support the resolution of the conflict," Lammy said on a visit to Rabat.
The position places Britain as the third permanent U.N. Security Council member to endorse Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, following the United States and France.
Morocco's foreign minister, Nasser Bourita, hailed the UK's position as historic, saying it was part of "a momentum to speed up the solution of the conflict."
UK investments in the territory were under examination, Bourita said.
The two countries signed deals to cooperate in healthcare, innovation, port and water infrastructure and procurement.
Lammy said the deals would "ensure British businesses score big on football's biggest stage," as Morocco pushes for infrastructure investment in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

June 3 (Reuters) - UK-based medical device company CMR Surgical has put itself up for sale at a valuation of up to $4 billion, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The surgical robotics maker had hired advisers in recent weeks to initiate the sale process, likely to elicit interest from large strategic buyers, the report added. Founded in 2014, CMR Surgical received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for the upgraded version of its flagship Versius surgical robot in October last year, to be used in gall bladder removal procedures. Emergency repairs at Peterborough footbridge after railings theft
Emergency repairs have been carried out on a city footbridge after it was vandalised and safety railings were Highways said about 20m (65.6ft) of railings were stolen on Friday from the bridge over the A47 connecting Walton and Fullbridge Road in councillor Alex Rafiq called it "an unusual incident" which left the bridge exposed and could have been "extremely dangerous" for said authorities acted "swiftly" to ensure the bridge was secured with temporary metal barriers and traffic cones and it reopened on Monday. Rafiq, who represents Paston and Walton ward, said: "I was frantically calling the council and panicking when I found out about the bridge not being secure. "It was frightening to know the barriers were missing especially as a father of two young sons."I have now reassured residents that temporary barriers have been placed and traffic cones left along the barriers which glow up in the dark."Unfortunately a few cones have been knocked over and were thrown over the railings which we have put back now."The temporary fence is solid and secure so I do not want residents to have any concerns about crossing the bridge." A National Highways spokesperson said: "We are aware that around 20m of railings were stolen from a footbridge over the A47 on Friday."While we try and source replacements, we have installed a temporary solution to allow the bridge to reopen."The theft has also been reported as a crime to the police."
