Iowa women's basketball hosting transfer portal visitor from UCLA
Iowa women's basketball is hosting former UCLA guard Elina Aarnisalo for a weekend visit.
Edwin Arocho of Prep Girls Hoops reported that Aarnisalo had made her way to Iowa City to take in what head coach Jan Jensen and the Hawkeyes have to offer her and how she could fit into Iowa's future plans.
A 5-foot-10 guard, Aarnisalo just completed her freshman season with the Bruins where she played in 37 games and started 10. Aarnisalo averaged 5.1 points, 3.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 43.7% from the field and 27.0% from 3-point range.
During her 10 starts, Aarnisalo's averages were up to 8.6 points, 5.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. Aarnisalo's shooting efficiency also ticked upwards during her starts. The Finland guard shot 54.7% from the field and 42.8% from 3-point range in games she started during her frosh campaign.
As Iowa looks to restock a backcourt that sees Lucy Olsen and Sydney Affolter depart, Aarnisalo could step right in as a starting point guard for the Hawkeyes. That would allow five-star and incoming McDonald's All-American Addie Deal to slide to the off-ball position for Iowa and morph into more of a scorer.
Plus, the Hawkeyes also inked four-star guard Journey Houston and Iowa returns a nucleus of guards that features Taylor McCabe, Kylie Feuerbach, Teagan Mallegni and Taylor Stremlow.

ESPN's Football Power Index gives Spartans slim chances of reaching bowl
The computers and numbers behind ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) are not high on the Spartans reaching a bowl game this season. While the Spartans' win total over/under is set at 5.5 (with some sports book juicing it to the over), the FPI rating system is giving Michigan State a less than 50-50 chance of reaching a bowl game this fall. According to a post from The Big Ten Huddle, the Spartans are given only a 31% chance to reach six wins to become bowl eligible. Among Big Ten teams, only Northwestern and Purdue have lower odds from FPI to reach a bowl game this season. Northwestern comes in at 27.8%, while Purdue is listed at a near impossible 1.8%. Michigan State is the only team from the Big Ten to not reach the postseason at least once in the last three years. The Spartans finished last season with a 5-7 record in year one under head coach Jonathan Smith, and are expecting a better record this upcoming season. The Spartans officially kick off the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on FS1. Mark Gronowski confirmed Iowa football starting QB, clean bill of health entering 2025
What has long been thought to be true for the fan base of the Iowa Hawkeyes has officially been confirmed entering the 2025 college football season. South Dakota State transfer Mark Gronowski is the Hawkeyes' starting quarterback for 2025 and enters the season with a clean bill of health that kept him out of spring practices. The talented signal caller is a reason for excitement around Iowa, as there is a belief he could be the best QB Iowa has had in many years, which could be the missing puzzle piece for a special season. The news, albeit nearly a foregone conclusion already, came from Pete Nakos of On3. Gronowski joins Iowa after an illustrious career for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits that saw him win the Walter Payton Award as the best FCS player in the country and win two national championships. A proven winner, he brings the ability to air it out with over 10,000 passing yards and isn't afraid to run the ball as a threat on the ground. Mark Gronowski will be paired with Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who enters his second season with the Hawkeyes after dragging the unit out of the doldrums last year and infusing some success into a unit that was desperate for it. 'You don't necessarily get to pick the exact guy you want in the transfer portal. You take the guys who are on there. When you're recruiting the country, there are 10,000 to choose from. In the portal, there are like seven guys who have experience and play at this level. We got one of the seven," Lester said about Gronowski choosing the Hawkeyes out of the transfer portal. Iowa and Gronowski will get things underway in less than two weeks when they host the UAlbany Great Danes in Kinnick Stadium for their Week 1 opener at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 30th.
