Meet the BABS! Lionesses' 'Brothers and Boyfriends' group ready to roar England to glory

Daily Mirror6 days ago
The boys have bonded over many years of supporting the Lionesses at major tournaments - and even have a special group chat to keep in touch
After a rollercoaster tournament, the Lionesses are now a mere 90 minutes from glory - if their nerves can hold out in the Euros final. England will take on Spain inside the sold-out St Jakob's Park stadium in Basel on Sunday night at 5pm BST.

Fans have flocked to the Swiss city on packed out planes after bagging last minute tickets, with many heading straight for the fan zone on Friday to soak up the atmosphere. And after two miraculous knockout victories, players' families believe the Lionesses ' mantra 'never say die' will see them bring it home again.

Georgia Stanway's older brother, John-Paul said: "After the last couple of games I just can't see them losing, they're just too relentless."

Speaking of the nerves at the semi-final against Italy, he added: "Even at the last second, you still felt at 94 minutes that they still weren't going to go home. It's a weird feeling, at one-nil down and you still don't feel they're ready to go home. "It's a credit to the team and everyone involved."
Ranked first in the world, the Spaniards left the Lionesses heartbroken with a 1-0 victory in the Australian World Cup final of 2023. On Sunday the superstitious Lionesses wear their white shirts to play Spain - the same colour they wore when they clinched the European Championship title three years ago.
And after two nail-biting games, which saw the Lionesses on the brink of eviction from the tournament, the nation, the players and their families are all hoping they can win inside 90 minutes.
Stanway's dad Paul said his 'nerves were shot' after the 120 minute semi-final against Italy, while Ella Toone admitted she felt 'physically sick' watching the penalty shootout with Sweden in the quarters.

But the rollercoaster of emotion has only served to bring the tight-knit players families even closer together. Ella, 25, from Tyldesley said: "We've sent them on a rollercoaster this tournament. Sometimes when you're in the moment and you're playing, you forget about how it's making your family feel and when you see them after games and you hear all the stories about how they're all jumping on each other and celebrating together, it's amazing. They've really bonded this trip."
She added: "It really reminds you of why you're here and who you're here for and why you do what you do. Hopefully we can kick on in this last game and make it one for them to remember too." And so close are some of the lads following the Lionesses, that they've even got a group chat dubbing themselves 'the BABs' AKA 'the brothers and boyfriends'.

John-Paul Stanway explained: "The name of our group chat which we've had for a few years is the BABs, which is the brothers and boyfriends. We've coined that phrase over the past few years and we now have a fair few of us in it, we try to keep adding to it." On Friday night the BABs enjoyed one last blowout together in Zurich as they gathered for a pub crawl before heading to Basel for the final tomorrow.
Ella's boyfriend Joe Bunney, her brother Joe Toone, were pictured sinking the pints with Georgia's brothers John Paul and Sol Stanway at the Big Ben Pub. John Paul also posed up alongside the Russo clan, including Alessia's dad Mario and brothers Giorgio and Luca.
When they've not been roaring the Lionesses on in the dugouts the boys have been sightseeing together and working out together. Posing topless from their early morning gym sessions, Alex Greenwood's boyfriend Jack O'Connell has also been invited into the fold of BABs this tournament.

EU ruling enables deeper review of CAS outcomes by national courts

Aug 1 (Reuters) - National courts must be allowed to conduct in-depth reviews of arbitral awards by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to ensure they are compliant with EU law, the European Court of Justice said on Friday. The ruling comes after RFC Seraing were banned from registering new players and also fined by soccer's governing body FIFA in 2015 when the Belgian club signed agreements with a company that transferred part of the economic rights to players. FIFA ruled their deal with a Maltese company Doyen Sports as a breach because third parties are not allowed to hold economic rights to players, with the sanctions being upheld by the CAS - sport's top court - as well as the Swiss Federal Supreme Court. However, Seraing brought the case before Belgian courts to challenge the compatibility of FIFA's rules with EU law. Although CAS awards are considered final and cannot be relitigated, the Belgian court approached the Court of Justice, which said such a scope is contrary to EU law. "It is essential that recourse to arbitration does not undermine the rights and freedoms that the fundamental rules of EU law guarantee athletes, clubs and, more broadly, any other person practising a professional sport or pursuing an economic activity linked to that sport," it said. "On those grounds, the Court of Justice rules today that the national courts or tribunals must be empowered to carry out... an in-depth judicial review as to whether arbitral awards made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (the CAS) are consistent with EU public policy." The Court of Justice found that in Seraing's case, FIFA made the club go to CAS to settle the dispute, rather than letting the club choose how to resolve it - a setup common in resolving sports-related disputes. "The Court rules that, in order to ensure effective judicial protection for athletes, clubs and other individuals who might be affected as a result of pursuing a sports-related economic activity within the European Union, the awards made by the CAS must be amenable to effective judicial review," it added. The ruling effectively undermines the absolute finality of CAS decisions, especially when such decisions are based on arbitration clauses imposed unilaterally by sports bodies. The Court of Justice also said that any country's laws that treat such CAS awards as immune from further scrutiny are incompatible with EU law. "The Court adds that a national court or tribunal is required to disapply of its own motion any national legislation or rules of a sports association that would hinder such effective judicial protection as regards individuals," it said. Reuters has contacted FIFA and the CAS for comment.

‘We're actively discussing it' – Jake Paul's team CONFIRM Anthony Joshua fight talks and reveal potential date and venue

JAKE PAUL'S team have CONFIRMED talks are ongoing for a fight with Anthony Joshua. YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul audaciously called out two-time heavyweight champ AJ earlier in the year. 4 It sparked a back-and-forth exchange between the two behind-the-scenes - paving the way for genuine talks between the two camps. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed they are interested with Paul's promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian also open for talks. And with Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh also on board - the shock fight could become a reality. Bidarian told Sky Sports: "I think the fight can absolutely happen. "I'm looking at it as Jake versus Joshua, which is quite biblical, and it's quite impactful in many ways. "I think size wise, we can get comfortable with it, and I think experience wise, Jake is learning very fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. "So it could be a very interesting matchup, and we're actively discussing it with Matchroom." Paul, 28, is coming off a ten-round points victory in June against former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39. 4 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Meanwhile Joshua, 35, is yet to return since being knocked out by Daniel Dubois, 27, in September. He has since undergone elbow surgery - with the plan to return before 2025 is over as Paul's camp eye the mega-bout next year. Bidarian said: "I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. "It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. "So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that. "It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua." Paul wants the fight at Wembley Stadium - but America and Saudi Arabia are also other potential hosts. Bidarian revealed: "We're looking at multiple options. Wembley's definitely a possibility. Jake said he'd like to do it there. "He likes the idea of going in and hearing 90,000 people booing him! He kind of feeds off that. "But we're looking at the US, obviously Saudi Arabia is an option, the Middle East is an option as a whole. "We want to do it in the most impactful way possible." Paul made his heavyweight debut last November - when Mike Tyson returned aged 58 after 20 YEARS away from the ring. He put on two stone to 16st 2lb (227lb) but admitted he struggled to even run before dropping back down to the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit. But Joshua was 18 stone against Dubois - which is a whopping FOUR STONE heavier than Paul. AJ brutally knocked out MMA star Francis Ngannou, 38, in 2024 in what was only the ex-UFC champ's second boxing bout. Bidarian said: "Power is obviously the last thing to go. "So obviously, AJ has a ton of power, and he's still fairly young. Mike Tyson - much more vicious of a knockout artist than Anthony Joshua - that was a risk Jake was willing to take. "Francis Ngannou, amazing MMA fighter, very powerful man, but not an experienced boxer, right? He is a lot less experienced than Jake Paul. "So if people were comfortable with Francis getting in there with AJ, Jake, who is now 13 fights in, plus one amateur fight, then we are comfortable with this." 4 4

The story of the Baptist's martyrdom – also painted by Caravaggio and dramatised by Oscar Wilde with illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley – has it that Salome's mother Herodias got her to demand John's head in return for dancing before her stepfather Herod. Rubens gives it a cannibalistic twist: he dwells on the banquet's food and drink and has the head brought up to Herod as an exotic dish. Herodias sticks her fork in its tongue. Yummy!
