Let Trader Joe's upgrade your picnic
When it comes to enjoying the perfect picnic, your choice of food and drinks matters. My rule of thumb is to have a nice mix of sweet and savory items — whether that's a packaged snack or non-perishable meal options — along with something fresh, like cut-up fruits and veggies, and a fun beverage. For meals, you'll want to stick to things that are easy to make, easy to pack and require only a few utensils to serve.
As for where to find good picnic foods and ingredients, Trader Joe's has got you covered. The retailer announced several new, seasonal products that are perfect to enjoy outdoors with company.
Here's what to buy to throw the ultimate summer picnic.
Sandwiches are a picnic staple. So, of course, TJ's Deli Sandwich Style Potato Chips are also a must-have. Per the brand, the chips are seasoned with a medley of seasonings 'that evoke notes of smoky ham, dilly pickle, sharp cheese, and zesty mustard, and kettle-cooked for a consummately crisp texture, creating a savory synthesis of two culinary icons in one snack.' The chips can be enjoyed on their own or or layered inside homemade sandwiches. They are also great for dipping, whether that's in guacamole, hummus or cottage cheese.
These chips scream 'summer picnic,' so be sure to snag them during your next trip to TJ's.
Whether you love it or loathe it, the hot honey trend has taken the culinary world by storm in recent years. Hot honey has been drizzled on pizza, fried chicken, grilled meats, breakfast eggs and, yes, even ice cream. Now, thanks to TJ's, the sweet and spicy condiment is getting its own flavored popcorn.
TJ's Hot Honey Popcorn is 'savory, salty, sweet, and spicy, all at once.' Each kettle corn popcorn is generously coated in honey powder and hot cayenne pepper, providing the perfect balance of two bold flavors. Try making a picnic-friendly trail mix with this popcorn. TJ's recommends mixing the popcorn with a combination of sweet and spicy snacks, like its Bite-Sized Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Candies, Thai Lime & Chili Cashews and Sweet & Spicy Pecans.
On the topic of chips, TJ's rendition of Takis is perfect as a stand-alone snack or for dipping in guacamole (like TJ's Avocado's Number Guacamole) or hummus (like TJ's Roasted Garlic Hummus). The chips are shaped like little scrolls and are dusted in hot Chili & Lime Flavored seasoning, which is why they're so addictive.
It's also worth mentioning that TJ's Chili & Lime Flavored Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips were crowned the top fan-favorite item for the second year in a row in the 2024 Customer Choice Awards. The chips also won the #1 Snack category for the second year in a row. In addition to being a pantry staple, they are an absolute picnic must-have.
If you're planning on assembling a picnic charcuterie board, be sure to grab TJ's Savory Squares during your next grocery trip. The bite-sized, gluten-free crackers are a cheese lover's dream come true. They are made with a mix of nut and seed flours and coated in a cheddar-y coating that makes them a more satisfying alternative to Cheez-Its. Top them with your favorite cheeses, spreads and preserved meats. The crackers can also be crushed up and used as breadcrumbs for making fried chicken or chicken cutlet sandwiches.
Crafted in the U.K. by a team of 'expert cheesemakers,' TJ's Shropshire Blue English Cheese is made with pasteurized cow's milk, vegetarian-friendly microbial enzyme and annatto, which gives the cheese a beautiful pale orange color. The cheese itself 'offers tangy flavors, rich aromas, and a crumbly, elegantly easy-eating texture,' as described by TJ's. It's stellar on a charcuterie board with dried fruit, fruit preserves, fresh figs and crackers. The cheese can also be crumbled over a picnic-ready salad.
Enough about the savory options, because no picnic is complete without its sweet fixings — and no summer picnic is complete without a cold treat to help battle the heat. TJ's limited-edition Black Sesame Mochi is filled with ice cream infused with a paste made from roasted and finely-ground black sesame seeds. 'This paste not only lends a rich gray-black hue, but also brings that characteristic nuttiness with a hint of savory to contrast with the flavor of the frozen sweet cream,' TJ's writes, adding that the 'resulting couple-bite-sized frozen treat is intriguingly tasty, and an instant conversation starter during your dinner-party dessert course.'
If you're planning on enjoying these mochis at a picnic, be sure to carry them in an insulated cooler bag. The mochis are ready to eat after three to four minutes resting at room temperature.
TJ's Dark Chocolate Covered Cashews touts roasted cashews covered in a thin, caramel-like coating and a layer of rich dark chocolate. It's the perfect picnic dessert that can be enjoyed on its own or in a homemade trail mix with crackers, dried fruit and salted nuts. The dark chocolate-covered cashews can also be crushed up and included in homemade cookies or topped on freshly-baked fudgy brownies.
A colorful and refreshing sweet treat, TJ's Watermelon Freeze Dried Candies are made with spirulina, paprika, vegetable juice, turmeric and fruit juice. They are deliciously sweet yet slightly tangy. And they melt in your mouth shortly after they hit your tongue. 'As they melt, these Candies gently fizz on your tongue,' per TJ's. 'Another fun fact? You'll find Trader Joe's Watermelon Freeze Dried Candies on our shelves, every day.'
These candies are a great option for those who want to enjoy something light and fruity while picnicking.
TJ's Tangerine Vanilla Sparkling Water is infused with natural Tangerine and Vanilla flavors, making it a healthy alternative to soft drinks. It's fizzy, crisp and flavorful — simply put, it's got everything you'd want in a summer beverage!
Enjoy this drink plain or in a mocktail made with fresh fruit juice, like TJ's Tangerine Juice, and a creamsicle, like TJ's Tangerine Cream Bar. I won't recommend bringing alcoholic beverages to the park, as it's illegal in specific states. But if you're planning on moving things indoors, then try adding a splash of rum or tequila to boozify your drink.

I travel for work at least once a month. I always buy these 12 Trader Joe's snacks to enjoy on the plane.
I travel once a month for work, and I've come to rely on Trader Joe's for the best in-flight snacks. I think the perfect plane snack is mess-free, odorless, and has some nutritional value. Some of my favorites include peanut butter crispy-rice bites and freeze-dried strawberries. As someone who flies at least once a month for business, I've learned that packing the right plane snacks is essential. In my opinion, the perfect plane snack is mess-free, doesn't have a strong smell, and offers some nutritional value. I've found that many of the snacks at Trader Joe's check all of these boxes. I like to switch things up for each trip, packing a mix of sweet and salty options to help me power through long delays or missed meals. Here are 12 of my go-to Trader Joe's snacks for traveling. The Citterio salami and cheese packs feel like a mini charcuterie board. I think of these little Citterio snack packs as portable charcuterie boards. Although they need to be refrigerated, they're fine for short trips in an insulated snack pouch. They're packed with protein, so I like to bring one along for flights that don't offer meal service. Trader Joe's dark-chocolate bar with almonds has a nice crunch. Trader Joe's dark-chocolate bar with almonds is made with 73% cacao, so it's a must-try for those who love darker, slightly bitter chocolate. There's also a version without almonds, but I prefer this one for the crunch and extra protein. The dark-chocolate caramels are the perfect sweet treat. These rich dark-chocolate-covered caramels are perfect for when I'm craving a tiny sweet treat. I stash a few in a Ziplock bag instead of taking the whole pouch, otherwise, I'd probably eat them all. Trader Joe's peanut butter crispy rice bites are the perfect size. I like Trader Joe's peanut butter crispy rice bites even better than name-brand Rice Krispy treats. They're the perfect size for a quick sugar fix on the go. In my opinion, they have just the right balance of flavors — there's not too much peanut butter, and the marshmallow flavor isn't overwhelming. These dark-chocolate almond-butter cups are a twist on a classic snack. Trader Joe's dark-chocolate almond-butter cups come individually wrapped, making them perfect for snacking or sharing. They offer an elevated twist on traditional milk-chocolate peanut-butter cups and have a dollop of creamy almond butter in the center. Trader Joe's milk-chocolate peanut-butter pretzels are one of my favorite snacks. This is hands down one of my all-time favorite snacks. Trader Joe's also sells regular peanut-butter-filled pretzels, which are very good, but the sweet milk-chocolate coating on these takes them to the next level. The PB&J and PB&C cups are like snack-sized sandwiches. The Trader Joe's peanut butter snack duos are great for kids. The chocolate version (PB&C) pairs a cocoa-creme-filled wafer stick with a creamy peanut butter dip, and the jelly version (PB&J) includes a peanut butter wafer with a raspberry dip. Both come in small, travel-friendly portions that meet the TSA's liquid and gel requirements. Chili-and-lime rolled corn tortilla chips make a great tangy treat. These chili-and-lime chips are the perfect salty snack with a kick. The rolled shape makes them great for travel since they don't break easily. When I'm craving something savory, Trader Joe's mini everything bagel sandwiches hit the spot. I can't get enough of Trader Joe's mini everything bagel sandwich crackers. They're buttery and savory, with a dollop of tangy cream cheese in between seasoned crackers. I love the variety in the Many Things snack mix. The Trader Joe's Many Things snack mix is packed with a blend of sweet and spicy flavors. The mix includes everything from mini pretzels and bread crisps to honey-roasted peanuts and cereal squares. Freeze-dried strawberries are a great mess-free snack. Trader Joe's fruit leather buttons are easy to toss in a bag. These fruit leather buttons come attached to paper for easy snacking — just peel them off and enjoy. They come in three flavors and are great for younger kids or anyone needing a quick and convenient treat.

I worked at Trader Joe's for 3 years. I still come back all the time for these 10 underrated items.
I always stock up on cold brew coffee bags. I drink coffee year-round, but in the summer months, cold brew is essential. Trader Joe's usually only sells these bags during the summer, so I buy them whenever they're available. They come in packs of four. I just steep two bags in about 7 cups of water overnight in the fridge, and I'm set for days. Over the summer, I almost always keep a pitcher of cold brew in my fridge — and I find this is much more cost-effective than buying a bottle or jug. Trader Joe's overnight oats are my go-to for a quick breakfast. I've tried overnight oats from several brands and found many to be either too mushy or too sweet. These, however, are perfect. Whenever I go on a Trader Joe's trip, I'll grab a few to keep in my fridge for early mornings. There are several flavors I love, but I always look forward to the pumpkin one that's stocked in the fall. I always buy this horchata-inspired ice cream, which nails the flavor of the classic Mexican drink. Trader Joe's horchata-inspired ice cream is creamy, cinnamon-y, and has just the right amount of cookie pieces (my weakness). This is another product that's only around in the summer months, so whenever I see it in the freezer case, I don't hesitate to add it to my cart. Trader Joe's dolmas are one of my favorite pantry staples. A customer once convinced me to try Trader Joe's dolmas, and I've been hooked ever since. You can eat these little grape leaf-wrapped rice rolls right out of the can! They're packed in soybean oil and make a great snack or side dish with hummus or tzatziki. I always buy Norwegian sourdough rye chips to pair with tuna salad. I first tried this combo after a customer recommended it. The rye chips add the perfect crunch and saltiness to any creamy tuna salad, and they're thick enough that they don't break easily. Trader Joe's refrigerated chicken nuggets are the ultimate work-from-home lunch hack. These chicken nuggets crisp up quickly in the air fryer and are easy to eat as a quick meal or snack. Sometimes, I toss them on a salad for extra protein. They have saved me from ordering takeout more times than I can count — and the spicy ones are great, too. The frozen hashbrowns are a cult favorite, and I've come to understand why. When I worked at Trader Joe's, customers would constantly ask if these were back in stock. I didn't understand the hype … until I tried them. Now, I always keep a box in my freezer. They crisp up perfectly in the air fryer and make a great base for avocado "toast" with a fried egg. The squiggly knife-cut-style noodles are a delicious alternative to instant ramen. Compared to other instant noodles I've tried, these have a chewy, bouncy texture that I love. Also, don't get me started on the sauce — it's spicy, garlicky, and nutty in the best way. I always keep a few packs on hand for lazy lunches or late-night snacks. Matua sauvignon blanc is my favorite chilled wine from Trader Joe's. A coworker introduced me to this crisp, not-too-sweet white wine from New Zealand, and it's been a staple ever since. I highly recommend chilling it in the fridge. Also, a pro tip: Look for the snowflake on the label, which turns blue when perfectly chilled. I'm terrible at staying hydrated, but these coconut waters help.

Best Supermarket Cold Brews, According To Experts
When the summer heat is out in full force, hot coffee doesn't always hit the spot like it does throughout the rest of the year. If you're looking for something a bit more refreshing, but still with the necessary kick that gears you up for the day, cold brew is a great option. While you can absolutely make your own cold brew (or iced coffee, for that matter), you may not want to. Fortunately, there are plenty of quality options you can grab online or at the supermarket. From single-serve cans to cold brew concentrates to multi-serving bottles of ready-to-drink cold brew, you have plenty of options. So, how do you choose? While it can be fun to sample your way through the options, we decided to get to the bottom of it for you by asking coffee experts about their favorite cold brew drinks and concentrates that can be purchased online or at the supermarket. Here's what they recommend: Trader Joe's Coconut Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate Lani Kingston, education director at the B2B event Coffee Fest and adjunct professor at Portland State University who teaches a class called "The Anthropology of Coffee," loves the taste, ease, and versatility of Trader Joe's Coconut Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate. 'The coconut flavor isn't overly sweet or fake — none of that sunscreen-y thing some coconut stuff has,' Kingston said. 'It's subtle, smooth and just makes the whole drink feel a little more special without being over the top.' She said it's also convenient for summer travels. 'It's also my camping go-to since it's small but strong, efficient to pack, and easy to mix,' Kingston said. Blue Bottle Coffee's Organic Cold Brew Matt Filipovich, founder of Same Sip Coffee, says Blue Bottle's Organic Cold Brew is the best he's had. It's sold in 8-ounce cans designed for a single serving. 'Blue Bottle uses a long immersion brewing method, which is steeping coarsely ground beans in cold water for 8 to 12 hours, which gives the final product this incredible clarity and balance without the bitterness or acidity you often find in cold brew,' Filipovich said. He also appreciates that the company sources high-quality coffee beans from places like Ethiopia, Kenya, Guatemala, and Colombia, which are some of the most celebrated coffee growing regions in the world. 'These areas are known for producing complex, vibrant coffees, and Blue Bottle brings out those flavors beautifully, even in cold brew form,' Filipovich said. Hey you! BuzzFeed Explorer's Cold Brew Concentrate Kylee Clancy, senior coffee buyer at Verve Coffee Roasters, recommends Explorer's Cold Brew Concentrate. 'To turn off my coffee brain for a morning or two, I typically mix the concentrate into water or milk to create both hot and iced versions,' she said, adding that she appreciates the company's focus on sustainability and social responsibility. 'With the glass packaging and concentrated consistency, a little truly goes a long way to give me my caffeine fix.' Stok's Extra Bold Cold Brew Coffee, Darker Roast When JT Santana, barista at Redband Coffee Co. in Davenport, Iowa, is off the clock and looking for an easy, reliable coffee, his favorite is Stok's Extra Bold Cold Brew, which is an unsweetened dark roast cold brew that's sold in a 48-ounce package that allows for four 12-ounce servings. 'It has that rich, full-bodied flavor I crave, without being bitter or overly acidic,' he said. 'I love that it is just coffee — no sugar, no gimmicks — so I can dress it up or drink it straight.' He also loves this product for its affordable price point, 'Which matters when you drink as much coffee as I do,' he said. Grady's New Orleans-Style Cold Brew Concentrate Riley Westbrook, barista and co-owner of Valor Coffee in Georgia, recommended Grady's New Orleans Style Cold Brew Concentrate, which is unique in that it's brewed with chicory and other spices. 'It brings this distinct molasses edge and a bitterness that works more like dark chocolate than over-roasted beans,' he said. 'When I taste it, I get clove, toasted grain, and a little black licorice on the finish. It is not subtle, and that is what makes it work.' Stumptown Coffee Roasters' Original Cold Brew Coffee If you're into drinking your cold brew black but don't want something bitter, Westbrook recommends Stumptown Coffee Roasters' Original Cold Brew Coffee, which is sold in a ready-to-drink single-serving bottle. 'You can drink it straight from the fridge, pour it over ice, and it holds up without milk or sugar,' he said. It also holds up well even a few days after opening the bottle, he said. Chameleon Organic Black Cold Brew Concentrate 'I recommend this because the sweetness comes from the bean's character rather than added flavoring,' Westbrook said. 'It tastes like burnt sugar and dark caramel without veering into artificial vanilla or syrupy territory.' Califia Farms' Pure Black Medium Roast Cold Brew For a cold brew that holds up well when mixed with oat or almond milk, Westbrook suggested Califia Farms' Pure Black Medium Roast Cold Brew, which is sold in a 32-ounce or 48-ounce package designed for multiple servings. 'It leans into soft citrus and cocoa notes that actually show up through the creaminess instead of disappearing,' Westbrook said. 'A lot of cold brews turn chalky or get drowned out when mixed with non-dairy milk— this one stays present without overpowering anything.' He also likes that it mixes well with non-dairy milks without separating or curdling. 'Some cold brews react poorly to certain alt milks and leave that weird, grainy film,' he said. 'I have poured this over half a dozen brands of oat and almond milk and it always blends evenly.' For the best coffee recipes, download the free Tasty app — no subscription required. BuzzFeed
